Context Matters: Patterns in Physical Distancing Behavior Across Situations and Over Time During the Covid-19 Pandemic in the Netherlands
CONCLUSIONS: Physical and social context matters for physical distancing, highlighting the importance of developing strategies for pandemic preparedness that improve opportunities for physical distancing (e.g., reducing crowding, one-way traffic) and accommodate young people to safely meet even in times of high pandemic severity and lockdowns. Future studies should account for the physical and social context in which distancing behavior is observed.PMID:37708324 | DOI:10.1093/abm/kaad053

Improvements in networking processes for hip or knee revision arthroplasty: a silver lining of the COVID-19 pandemic
CONCLUSIONS: Based upon our observations, a greater volume and proportion of revision arthroplasty cases are now being discussed. Adherence to MDT recommendations has significantly improved following the described adaptations. The number of recommended adaptations to management plans have decreased, indicating an educational value of the network.Overall, these findings demonstrate a trend towards NHS England's target of 100% of revision arthroplasty cases undergoing MDT discussion.PMID:37705235 | DOI:10.1177/11207000231200824

Integrated Immunopeptidomics and Proteomics Study of SARS-CoV-2 Infected Calu-3 Cells Reveals Dynamic Changes in Allele-specific HLA Abundance and Antigen Presentation
We present an integrated immunopeptidomics and proteomics study of SARS-CoV-2 infection to comprehensively decipher the changes in host cells in response to viral infection. Immunopeptidomics analysis identified viral antigens presented by host cells through both Class I and Class II MHC system for recognition by the adaptive immune system. The host proteome changes were characterized by quantitative proteomics and glycoproteomics and from these data, the activation of TLR3-interferon pathway was identified. Glycosylation analysis of HLA proteins from the elution and flow-through of immunoprecipitation revealed that SARS-C...

Do masks cover more than just a face? A study on how facemasks affect the perception of emotional expressions according to their degree of intensity
The objective of the present study was to evaluate the impact of facemasks through an emotion categorization task using morphs ranging from a neutral face and an expressive face (anger, disgust, fear, happiness, and sadness) (from 0% neutral to 100% expressive in 20% steps). Our results revealed a strong impact of facemasks on the recognition of expressions of disgust, happiness, and sadness, resulting in a decrease in performance and an increase in misinterpretations, both for low and high levels of intensity. In contrast, the recognition of anger and fear, as well as neutral expression, was found to be less impacted by m...

The Use of Antimicrobial Drug in Patients During the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Meta-Analysis
CONCLUSION: During the COVID-19 pandemic, the patient's use of antibiotics does not significantly improve clinical efficacy, so antibiotic use is recommended only for patients with complicated bacterial infections.PMID:37708540

The Sociodemographic Characteristics of Indian Nursing Students and Their Intentions to Migrate Overseas for Work
The objective of this study was to assess the intensions of nursing students to pursue overseas career on completion of their studies. The study used a cross-sectional survey design to collect data from 1408 nursing students from across four states of India namely, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra and Rajasthan using a google survey form. The major finding of the study was that 54% of the respondents intended to migrate overseas. Better career advancement opportunities, better working conditions, higher pay, better lifestyle, were the reasons cited by those who had an intension to migrate. Establishing norms for nurse-patien...

Regulatory perspective for quality evaluation of lipid nanoparticle-based mRNA vaccines in China
Biologicals. 2023 Sep 12;84:101700. doi: 10.1016/j.biologicals.2023.101700. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn recent years, urgent unmet medical needs due to the COVID-19 pandemic have accelerated the application of mRNA technology in vaccine development, leading to some of the first approvals of mRNA vaccines in human history by regulatory agencies around the world. For market authorization, comprehensive chemistry, manufacturing and control (CMC) information is required to assure the safety and quality consistency of mRNA vaccines. Evaluating mRNA vaccines for new virus variants poses a challenge for regulators, given the...

The re-emergence of influenza following the COVID-19 pandemic in Victoria, Australia, 2021 to 2022
ConclusionEnhanced testing for respiratory viruses during the COVID-19 pandemic provided a more complete picture of influenza virus transmission compared with previous seasons. Returned international travellers were important drivers of influenza reemergence, as were young adults, a group whose role has previously been under-recognised in the establishment of seasonal influenza epidemics. Targeting interventions, including vaccination, to these groups could reduce future influenza transmission.PMID:37707981 | DOI:10.2807/1560-7917.ES.2023.28.37.2300118

The roles and challenges of the primary health care systems in epidemic management: a scoping review
CONCLUSIONS: Based on the results of the present study, there is a need for further studies to formulate and theorize the specific roles of PHC in managing infectious disease epidemics. The results of this study can be utilized by researchers and officials to inform their efforts in addressing this purpose.PMID:37705282 | DOI:10.1017/S1463423623000452

Bibliometric analysis of the worldwide scientific production on COVID-19 infection and cerebrovascular disease
CONCLUSION: It was observed that the United States was the country with the highest scientific production on COVID-19 and cerebrovascular disease in the year 2020 in the different health areas; however, more research is still needed worldwide for a better analysis of the bibliometric indicators on the subject.PMID:37706386 | PMC:PMC10284493 | DOI:10.4103/aca.aca_70_22

Exploring the impact of carbon emissions and co-macroeconomic determinants on China's sustainable apple export
Environ Sci Pollut Res Int. 2023 Sep 14. doi: 10.1007/s11356-023-29497-3. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTChina is the foremost global consumer, producer, and exporter of fresh apples. In 2021, China produced roughly 44 million tons of apples and exported just over 1 million tons, a nearly 2% increase over the previous year. However, the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has had a detrimental impact on global trade and has led to a decrease in China's agricultural exports. The present study aims to contribute to the existing body of literature by analyzing plausible macroeconomic determinants that might impact China's apple exports....

Vaccination coverage survey of children aged 1-3 years in Beijing, China, 2005-2021
CONCLUSION: The coverage level and service quality of routine immunization in Beijing were relatively high. However, as influenced by COVID-19 epidemics, both on-time and in-time vaccination rates decreased significantly, except for BCG and HepB. Under the background of COVID-19 pandemic, the keys to maintain high level of vaccination coverage include flexible immunization service time to ensure the guardians bringing their children for vaccination timely, and more attention from providers to the doses after children's first birthday.PMID:37709591 | DOI:10.1016/j.vaccine.2023.08.015

Post-pandemic modeling of COVID-19: Waning immunity determines recurrence frequency
Math Biosci. 2023 Sep 12:109067. doi: 10.1016/j.mbs.2023.109067. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThere are many factors in the current phase of the COVID-19 pandemic that signal the need for new modeling ideas. In fact, most traditional infectious disease models do not address adequately the waning immunity, in particular as new emerging variants have been able to brake the immune shield acquired either by previous infection by a different strain of the virus, or by inoculation of vaccines not effective for the current variant. Furthermore, in a post-pandemic landscape in which reporting is no longer a default, it is impossi...
