Food allergy: practical approach on education and accidental exposure prevention.
Authors: Pádua I, Moreira A, Moreira P, Barros R Abstract Food allergies are a growing problem and currently the primary treatment of food allergy is avoidance of culprit foods. However, given the lack of information and education and also the ubiquitous nature of allergens, accidental exposures to food allergens are not uncommon. The fear of potential fatal reactions and the need of a proper avoidance leads in most of the cases to the limitation of leisure and social activities. This review aims to be a practical approach on education and accidental exposure prevention regarding activities like shopping, eating o...

What is new in food allergy diagnostics? A practice-based approach
The literature is replete with reviews listing diagnostic methods for food allergy and their utility. However, for the practicing allergist/immunologist, the diagnosis, or the dediagnosis, of food allergy starts with the patient presentation. Unlike other disorders, for which a patient presents, a history is obtained, and tests are performed to elucidate the disorder, in food allergy, the sequence of events is often reversed. The ubiquitous availability and indiscriminate ordering of food specific serum IgEs, the prior recommendations of late introductions of allergenic foods in the diet of infants, and the avoidance of al...

The custom clearance of pro- and prebiotics in allergy prevention
Although allergy was considered a “white elephant” in the previous century,1 it currently affects large strata of the population, not only in the industrialized world but also with an increasing incidence in emerging countries. After the increase in respiratory allergy from 1960 through 1990, there has been a remarkable increase in food allergy, which has reached epidemic proportions.2 Australian data have indicated that more than 10% of 1-year-old infants in the 2010s have challenge-proved immunoglobulin A-mediated food allergy to one of the common allergenic foods of infancy, with sensitization reported at 8.9% for p...

Non –IgE-mediated food allergy syndromes
In contrast to IgE-mediated food allergies, diagnosis of the various non –IgE-mediated food allergy syndromes can be challenging because of the overall lack of noninvasive confirmatory testing for these disorders. Many of the non–IgE-mediated food allergy syndromes are diagnosed clinically based on history and managed empirically with food avoidance. Therefore, it is essential for the practicing allergist to be familiar with the myriad presentations of non–IgE-mediated food allergy. This review focuses on the presentation and management of the non–IgE-mediated food allergy syndromes.

Allergy in urban elderly population living in Campania region (Southern Italy). A multicenter study.
In conclusion, the prevalence and clinical significance of airway allergic sensitization in the elderly living in Campania region is more significant than expected in latter stages of life. Physicians should not neglect the role of atopy as a risk factor for the onset of allergic respiratory symptoms even in elderly patients. PMID: 27425174 [PubMed - indexed for MEDLINE]

Ara h 6 sensitization in peanut allergy: friend, foe or innocent bystander?
Authors: Tontini C, Marinangeli L, Maiello N, Abbadessa S, Villalta D, Antonicelli L Abstract The clinical role of Ara h 6 sensitization in peanut allergy is a current matter of debate. We investigated the role of Ara h 6 sensitization patterns in a sample of young adults from different Italian cities. Sera of 33 patients with specific IgE against Ara h 6 were selected. According to clinical symptoms upon peanut ingestion, patients were divided into severe reaction (SR) and mild-tolerant (MT) subgroups. While the SR group mainly showed sensitization patterns involving Ara h 2 and other major allergenic components, ...

Hymenoptera Venom Allergy. A closer collaboration is needed between allergists and emergency physicians.
Conclusions. In our survey we found a number of ED physicians whose knowledge of HVA, beyond the emergency treatment, is not satisfactory. A closer collaboration among ED physicians and allergists is urgently needed. PMID: 28120601 [PubMed - in process]

The Kingston Allergy Birth Cohort: Exploring parentally reported respiratory outcomes through the lens of the exposome.
CONCLUSION: The KABC is a unique cohort with diversity that can be leveraged for exposomics-based studies. This study found that all 3 domains of the exposome had effects on the respiratory health of KABC children. Ongoing studies using phase 1 of the KABC continue to explore the internal exposome through allergy skin testing and epigenetic analyses and the specific external domain through in-home environmental analyses, air pollution modeling, and ultimately potential convergences within and among domains. In Vitro Diagnostic Testing for Antibiotic Allergy.
Authors: Doña I, Torres MJ, Montañez MI, Fernández TD Abstract Allergy to antibiotics is an important worldwide problem, with an estimated prevalence of up to 10% of the population. Reaction patterns for different antibiotics have changed in accordance with consumption trends. Most of the allergic reactions to antibiotics have been reported for betalactams, followed by quinolones and macrolides and, to a lesser extent, to others, such as metronidazole clindamycin and sulfonamides. The diagnostic procedure includes a detailed clinical history, which is not always possible and can be unreliable. This is usually fo...

Disappearance of severe oral allergy syndrome following omalizumab treatment.
Authors: Asero R Abstract Summary: The first case of disappearance of apple-induced oral allergy syndrome in a birch pollen-allergic patient following omalizumab treatment is reported. This observation in a case of type 2 food allergy suggests that omalizumab is potentially an effective preventive treatment for patients with severe, type 1 food allergies. Changes in patient quality of life during oral immunotherapy for food allergy
ConclusionsQOL of patients with food allergy improves in some but deteriorates in others during OIT. Patients with impaired QOL at baseline, improve significantly despite the treatment‐burden. Some patients with better QOL at baseline, might deteriorate during OIT.This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.
