Epigenetic changes in inflammatory genes and the protective effect of cooked rhubarb on pancreatic tissue of rats with chronic alcohol exposure
In this study, we investigated whether chronic exposure to alcohol can alter inflammatory gene expression and the epigenetic regulation effect of cooked rhubarb in the pancreatic tissue of rats. First, changes in inflammatory cytokine DNA methylation (IL-10, IL-1α, TNF-α, NF-κB and TGF-β) were detected in pancreatic tissue of Sprague-Dawley rats with varying alcohol exposure times (4, 6, 8, or 12 weeks), and then with varying doses of cooked rhubarb treatment (3, 6, or 12 g/day). DNA methylation levels, related RNA concentrations and protein expression of specific inflammatory cytokines, and histopathological score wer...

Mechanistic insights into the use of rhubarb in diabetic kidney disease treatment using network pharmacology
In this study, we predicted the core active compounds of rhubarb used in the treatment of diabetic kidney disease (DKD) and the related core gene targets and pathways using network pharmacological approaches. The Traditional Chinese Medicine Systems Pharmacology Database and Analysis Platform was used to identify active compounds of rhubarb. PharmMapper was used to predict the gene targets of active compounds, which were subsequently provided a standard nomenclature using the UniProt database. In addition, DKD-related target genes were predicted using GeneCards, Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man, and Therapeutic Targe...

Safety of jidabokuippo administration based on adverse event rate
ConclusionThe adverse event rate associated with JDI use was low and onset was relatively rapid. We can further reduce this adverse event rate by paying attention to the pharmacological action of rhubarb rhizome andGlycyrrhiza root. (Source: Traditional and Kampo Medicine)

Emodin ameliorates antioxidant capacity and exerts neuroprotective effect via PKM2-mediated Nrf2 transactivation
Food Chem Toxicol. 2021 Dec 28:112790. doi: 10.1016/j.fct.2021.112790. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPyruvate kinase M2 (PKM2) is overexpressed in neuronal cells. However, there are few studies on the involvement of PKM2 modulators in neurodegenerative diseases. Emodin, a dominating anthraquinone derivative extracting from the rhizome of rhubarb, has received expanding consideration due to its pharmacological properties. Our data reveal that emodin could resist hydrogen peroxide- or 6-hydroxydopamine-mediated mitochondrial fission and apoptosis in PC12 cells (a neuron-like rat pheochromocytoma cell line). Notably, emodin a...

A systematic comparison of the effect of topically applied anthraquinone aglycones to relieve psoriasiform lesion: The evaluation of percutaneous absorption and anti-inflammatory potency
Biomed Pharmacother. 2022 Jan;145:112482. doi: 10.1016/j.biopha.2021.112482. Epub 2021 Dec 3.ABSTRACTThe anthraquinones derived from rhubarb are reported to have anti-inflammatory activity. The present study aimed to assess the topical application of rhubarb anthraquinone aglycones for psoriasis treatment. The antipsoriatic effect of five anthraquinones, including aloe-emodin, rhein, emodin, physcion, and chrysophanol, was compared to elucidate a structure-permeation relationship. Molecular modeling was employed to determine the physicochemical properties. Both macrophages (differentiated THP-1) and keratinocytes (HaCaT) w...

Rheum tanguticum Alleviates Cognitive Impairment in APP/PS1 Mice by Regulating Drug-Responsive Bacteria and Their Corresponding Microbial Metabolites
Drugs targeting intestinal bacteria have shown great efficacy for alleviating symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease (AD), and microbial metabolites are important messengers. Our previous work indicated that Rheum tanguticum effectively improved cognitive function and reshaped the gut microbial homeostasis in AD rats. However, its therapeutic mechanisms remain unclear. Herein, this study aimed to elaborate the mechanisms of rhubarb for the treatment of AD by identifying effective metabolites associated with rhubarb-responsive bacteria. The results found that rhubarb reduced hippocampal inflammation and neuronal damage in APP/PS...

Rhubarb hydroxyanthraquinones act as antiobesity agents to inhibit adipogenesis and enhance lipolysis
This study evaluated and compared the lipid-lowering activity of five rhubarb hydroxyanthraquinones (HAQs), including chrysophanol, aloe emodin, emodin, physcion, and rhein, aiming to identify candidate compounds for obesity treatment. Examination of the antiobesity effects of HAQs in 3T3-L1 adipocytes and high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obese rats showed that these anthraquinone compounds inhibited lipid accumulation in 3T3-L1 cells before and after differentiation. Emodin and rhein showed greater inhibition than the other compounds; dosage at 50 μM reduced intracellular triglyceride (TG) by about 30% in the differentiated a...

Inclusion of abandoned rhubarb stalk enhanced anaerobic fermentation of alfalfa on the Qinghai Tibetan Plateau
Bioresour Technol. 2021 Nov 19:126347. doi: 10.1016/j.biortech.2021.126347. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTTo investigate the effects of lactic acid bacteria inoculant (LI) and abandoned rhubarb stalk (RS) on the anaerobic fermentation and bacterial community of alfalfa on the Qinghai Tibetan Plateau, the alfalfa was harvested and ensiled without (control) or with LI and RS at ambient temperature (5∼15℃) for 90 days. Addition of RS at ensiling increased (P<0.05) lactate, acetate and propionate contents, and decreased (P<0.05) the final pH value as compared with control. Addition of RS increased (P<0.05) the bac...
