Herbal Medicines for Constipation and Phytochemical Comparison of Active Components
Am J Chin Med. 2022 Mar 24:1-10. doi: 10.1142/S0192415X2250029X. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTConstipation is a very common medical condition worldwide, negatively affecting patients' quality of life and healthcare system. Rhubarb, senna leaf, and aloe are three frequently used herbal medications for achieving regular bowel movement. Rhubarb is also a key ingredient in MaZiRenWan, a Chinese medicine formula used every so often for constipation in oriental countries. We reviewed and summarized the major chemical components from these three botanicals, including dianthrones, anthraquinone glycosides, free anthraquinones, an...

Establishment of Quality Control Standard and Efficacy Evaluation of Zhiqingshu Lotion Compound Preparation
CONCLUSION: HPLC could quantitatively and qualitatively analyze and identify the main components of Zhiqingshu lotion as rhodopsin, rhodopsin, caffeic acid, and berberine hydrochloride. And Zhiqingshu lotion has an excellent anti-inflammatory effect. This method was simple and reliable and could be used for the identification of the ingredients and content of Zhiqingshu lotion, thus improving the quality control of the drug.PMID:35321202 | PMC:PMC8938067 | DOI:10.1155/2022/2351366 (Source: Computational and Mathematical Methods in Medicine)

Exploration of Q-Marker of Rhubarb Based on Intelligent Data Processing Techniques and the AUC Pooled Method
Rhubarb, as a traditional Chinese medicine, has several positive therapeutic effects, such as purging and attacking accumulation, clearing heat and purging fire, cooling blood, and detoxification. Recently, Rhubarb has been used in prescriptions for the prevention and treatment of COVID-19, with good efficacy. However, the exploration of effective quantitative approach to ensure the consistency of rhubarb’s therapeutic efficacy remains a challenge. In this case, this study aims to use non-targeted and targeted data mining technologies for its exploration and has comprehensively identified 72 rhubarb-related components in...

Quality evaluation of different varieties of rhubarb based on multicomponent and bioactivity: Committed to quality control in the production of rhubarb decoction pieces
Biomed Chromatogr. 2022 Mar 11:e5368. doi: 10.1002/bmc.5368. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn this work, we developed a novel HPLC method for the simultaneous determination of 16 bioactive components in rhubarb and used it to determine the contents of rhubarb. Through the determination of bioactive components and in vitro activity, we compared the differences of 18 batches of different varieties of rhubarb. The contents of 16 bioactive components in Rheum officinale Baill., Rheum tanguticum Maxim. ex Balf., and Rheum palmatum Linn. ranged from 57.53-76.09, 98.88-130.61, and 36.18-48.66 mg/g, respectively. The average inhib...

Rhubarb Alleviates Acute Lung Injury by Modulating Gut Microbiota Dysbiosis in Mice
Curr Microbiol. 2022 Feb 26;79(4):116. doi: 10.1007/s00284-022-02811-x.ABSTRACTIntestinal microbiota disorders can aggravate pulmonary inflammation during acute lung injury (ALI). As a traditional Chinese herb, Rhubarb can regulated the gut microbiota. Therefore, this study was conducted to test the hypothesis that rhubarb alleviates gut microbiota dysbiosis and inflammation. Feces were collected from patients with ALI to detect the gut microbiota using 16S rDNA sequencing. Subsequently, a mouse model of ALI was established using lipopolysaccharide to investigate changes in the gut microbiota, the peripheral blood was atta...

Targeting intestinal flora and its metabolism to explore the laxative effects of rhubarb
In conclusion, the amelioration of rhubarb in constipation might modulate the intestinal microflora and its metabolism. Moreover, the application of fecal metabolomics could provide a new strategy to uncover the mechanism of herbal medicines.Key points• Rhubarb could significantly improve gut microbiota disorder in constipation rats.• Rhubarb could markedly modulate the fecal metabolite profile of constipated rats.PMID:35129656 | DOI:10.1007/s00253-022-11813-5 (Source: Applied Microbiology and Biotechnology)
