Semi-adjustable posterior approach for congenital ptosis repair- outcomes of local and general anesthesia
CONCLUSION: Posterior approach levatorpexy is a safe and effective procedure for repairing congenital ptosis in patients with good levator function. This technique is suitable for young patients and those unable to undergo surgery under local anesthesia. This technique offers post-operative modification due to its semi-adjustable nature.PMID:38602026 | DOI:10.1177/11206721241247426 (Source: European Journal of Ophthalmology)

Optimization of Xenografting Methods for Generating Human Skeletal Muscle in Mice
Cell Transplant. 2024 Jan-Dec;33:9636897241242624. doi: 10.1177/09636897241242624.ABSTRACTXenografts of human skeletal muscle generated in mice can be used to study muscle pathology and to test drugs designed to treat myopathies and muscular dystrophies for their efficacy and specificity in human tissue. We previously developed methods to generate mature human skeletal muscles in immunocompromised mice starting with human myogenic precursor cells (hMPCs) from healthy individuals and individuals with facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD). Here, we examine a series of alternative treatments at each stage in order to ...

Review: Mechanisms of TIMP-3 accumulation and pathogenesis in Sorsby fundus dystrophy
Mol Vis. 2024 Mar 3;30:74-91. eCollection 2024.ABSTRACTSorsby fundus dystrophy (SFD) is a rare, inherited form of macular degeneration caused by mutations in the gene encoding tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases 3 (TIMP-3). There are 21 mutations currently associated with SFD, with some variants (e.g., Ser179Cys, Tyr191Cys, and Ser204Cys) having been studied much more than others. We review what is currently known about the identified SFD variants in terms of their dimerization, metalloproteinase inhibition, and impact on angiogenesis, with a focus on disparities between reports and areas requiring further study. We als...

The Role of TGF-beta Signaling in Muscle Atrophy, Sarcopenia and Cancer Cachexia
Gen Comp Endocrinol. 2024 Apr 9:114513. doi: 10.1016/j.ygcen.2024.114513. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSkeletal muscle, comprising a significant proportion (40 to 50 percent) of total body weight in humans, plays a critical role in maintaining normal physiological conditions. Muscle atrophy occurs when the rate of protein degradation exceeds protein synthesis. Sarcopenia refers to age-related muscle atrophy, while cachexia represents a more complex form of muscle wasting associated with various diseases such as cancer, heart failure, and AIDS. Recent research has highlighted the involvement of signaling pathways, includin...

Neurophysiological and imaging biomarkers of lower motor neuron dysfunction in motor neuron diseases/amyotrophic lateral sclerosis: IFCN handbook chapter
Clin Neurophysiol. 2024 Mar 20;162:91-120. doi: 10.1016/j.clinph.2024.03.015. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThis chapter discusses comprehensive neurophysiological biomarkers utilised in motor neuron disease (MND) and, in particular, its commonest form, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). These encompass the conventional techniques including nerve conduction studies (NCS), needle and high-density surface electromyography (EMG) and H-reflex studies as well as novel techniques. In the last two decades, new methods of assessing the loss of motor units in a muscle have been developed, that are more convenient than earlier met...

Ultrasonographic and power doppler parameters of nails fail to differentiate between onychodystrophy in patients with psoriasis vulgaris or psoriatic arthritis
CONCLUSION: Greater nail bed thickness indicates early psoriatic nail disease, as confirmed in our study correlating NAPSI with nail bed thickness. Ultrasonography is a low-cost exam, promising in the evaluation, showing that the ultrasound grayscale is consistent with those who have dystrophic nails, but it can't distinguish psoriasis from psoriatic arthritis, even in those with nail dystrophy.PMID:38605415 | DOI:10.1186/s42358-024-00367-x (Source: Adv Data)
