Gender, race, and space: A qualitative exploration of young Black women's perceptions of urban neighborhoods
Am J Community Psychol. 2024 Apr 21. doi: 10.1002/ajcp.12752. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTHow people think and feel about their neighborhood impacts the way they think of themselves and their futures. These linkages are especially important to understand in the case of urban-residing young Black women. Researchers know very little about what contributes to young Black adults' urban neighborhood perceptions and often rely on "expert" definitions of markers of neighborhood quality. These definitions and subsequent explorations of residents' neighborhood assessment have not adequately considered intersecting oppressive syst...

Exploring psychiatric patient restraints: Balancing safety, ethics, and patient rights in mental healthcare
Asian J Psychiatr. 2024 Apr 15;96:104051. doi: 10.1016/j.ajp.2024.104051. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTRestraint, often linked with limiting an individual's freedom of movement, has become a focal point of extensive discussion and evaluation within the realm of mental healthcare. Striking a delicate balance between ensuring individual safety and minimizing reliance on restraint methods poses a significant challenge. In mental health inpatient settings, the prevalent forms of restraint encompass physical, chemical, environmental, and psychological methods. Paradoxically, the consequences of employing restraint can be sever...

Bariatric surgeons' views on pre ‐operative factors associated with improved health‐related quality of life following surgery
This study offers an initial in sight into bariatric surgeons' views on the influence of different pre-operative factors on post-operative health-related quality of life. The array of views identified suggests that there may be an opportunity for medical education, but the findings warrant caution due to the sample size. Replicati on with a larger survey may be useful, especially as predicted health-related quality of life outcomes could guide decisions regarding surgical (non)progression. (Source: Clinical Obesity)

Neuropsychological assessment, intervention, and best practices for women with non-Central nervous system cancer: A scoping review of current standards
Conclusions: Women are subject to unique treatment-related outcomes due to the impact of hormonal alterations, differences in metabolization of certain chemotherapies, and psychosocial risk factors. Despite the known impact of cancer intervention, chronic illness, and cancer-related sequelae on cognitive outcomes, the current literature does not parsimoniously outline best practices for neuropsychologists to promote the health of women experiencing cancer. The current paper (1) provides an overview of the cognitive implications of cancer treatment with an intentional focus on cancers that are more prevalent in women versus...

Effects of oral administration of ondansetron, a 5-HT < sub > 3 < /sub > receptor antagonist, on anxiety-related behaviors and colonic hypercontractility in repeated stress-induced mice
CONCLUSIONS: Oral administration of ondansetron prevented increased FPO but did not affect anxiety-related behavior in repeated stress model. Colonic hypercontractility in the stressed mice was related to increased responses to cholinergic-induced contractions, which involved 5-HT3 receptors. Our findings suggest the modulatory roles of 5-HT3 receptors to mediate stress-induced colonic dysfunction.PMID:38642511 | DOI:10.1016/j.autneu.2024.103178 (Source: Autonomic Neuroscience)

Interactions of phenylalanine derivatives with human tyrosinase: lessons from experimental and theoretical studies
Chembiochem. 2024 Apr 20:e202400235. doi: 10.1002/cbic.202400235. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe pigmentation of the skin, modulated by different actors in melanogenesis, is mainly due to the melanins (protective pigments). In humans, these pigments' precursors are synthetized by an enzyme known as tyrosinase (TyH). The regulation of the enzyme activity by specific modulators (inhibitors or activators) can offer a means to fight hypo- and hyper-pigmentations responsible for medical, psychological and societal handicaps. Herein, we report the investigation of phenylalanine derivatives as TyH modulators. Interacting with ...
