Curr Med Res Opin. 2024 Apr 16:1-32. doi: 10.1080/03007995.2024.2340734. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAtopic dermatitis (AD) has become a common childhood disease that affects a large number of children worldwide and has become a chronic skin disease that cause a huge economical and psychological damage to the whole family. Despite the use of steroids, immunosuppressants and various topical preparation, the prognosis is still poor. Hence, this review aimed to explore the potential of using essential oils (EO) as an active ingredient in managing AD. The review was completed by using Pubmed, Scopus and Medline to search for...

Challenges with hippocampal MR spectroscopy as a surrogate for pre-radiotherapy assessment of neurocognitive impairment in patients with brain metastasis
CONCLUSION: Borderline statistically significant correlations were observed with speculative interpretation underlying the challenges of hippocampal MRS as a surrogate for neurocognitive impairment. Further studies need to be done to ascertain the opportunities for imaging predictors of benefit from memory sparing radiotherapy.PMID:38623639 | DOI:10.5507/bp.2024.012 (Source: Biomedical Papers of the Medical Faculty of the Univ Palacky Olomouc Czech Repub)

Mother-Infant Interaction and Maternal Postnatal Psychological Distress Associate with Child's Social-Emotional Development During Early Childhood: A FinnBrain Birth Cohort Study
Child Psychiatry Hum Dev. 2024 Apr 16. doi: 10.1007/s10578-024-01694-2. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTWe studied the effects of mother-infant interaction and maternal pre- and postnatal psychological distress on children's social-emotional problems and competences, as well as whether interaction quality moderates the association between distress and children's outcomes. Maternal pre- and postnatal psychological distress were measured using the SCL and EPDS questionnaires, whereas mother-infant interaction was measured when the child was 8 months old using the EA Scales. Children's social-emotional development was measured ...

Effect of Depression Interventions in Patients Undergoing Total Joint Arthroplasty Without a Formal Diagnosis of Depression: A Systematic Review
CONCLUSIONS: Overall, a wide range of interventions aimed at psychological optimization of patients undergoing TJA can improve depressive symptoms, pain, and function, even in the absence of a formal diagnosis of depression. Specifically, cognitive-based psychotherapy and enhanced perioperative support had the best evidence. Routine pharmacotherapy plays a limited role, if any, in the care of TJA. Additional efforts to develop pragmatic, evidence-based, and reproducible interventions are warranted to continue to optimize outcomes in TJA patients.PMID:38626430 | DOI:10.5435/JAAOS-D-23-01130 (Source: The Journal of the Ameri...

The Association Between Stuttering Burden and Psychosocial Aspects of Life in Adults
CONCLUSIONS: Our results emphasize the need to be attentive to the diverse experiences and needs of PWS, rather than treating them as a homogeneous group. Our findings also stress the importance of personalized therapeutic strategies for individuals with stuttering, considering all aspects that could influence their stuttering burden. People with high-burden stuttering might, for example, have a higher need for psychological therapy to reduce stuttering-related anxiety. People with less emotional reactions but severe speech distortions may also have a moderate to high burden, but they may have a higher need for speech tech...

Oncological Rehabilitation for Breast Cancer
Rehabilitation (Stuttg). 2024 Apr;63(2):119-130. doi: 10.1055/a-2129-9279. Epub 2024 Apr 16.ABSTRACTAs a result of increasingly individualized and multimodal therapy, prognosis of breast cancer has improved significantly over the last years. However, multimodal treatment and the use of new medications can lead to a variety of somatic, sometimes new, side effects such as fatigue, polyneuropathy or autoimmune toxicities. This and the oncological diagnosis lead to a high level of psychological distress in the women affected and often to subsequent psychological disorders (sleep/anxiety disorders, depression, ...). Both the di...

Barriers to Cervical Cancer Screening by Sexual Orientation Among Low-Income Women in North Carolina
Arch Sex Behav. 2024 Apr 16. doi: 10.1007/s10508-024-02844-2. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTWe sought to examine cervical cancer screening barriers by sexual orientation among low-income women in North Carolina. The MyBodyMyTest-3 Trial recruited low-income women (< 250% of federal poverty level) aged 25-64 years who were 1+ year overdue for cervical cancer screening. We compared perceptions of cervical cancer screening among those who self-identified as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or queer (LGBQ; n = 70) to straight/heterosexual women (n = 683). For both LGBQ and straight respondents, the greatest barriers to screening wer...

What do meta-analysts need in primary studies? Guidelines and the SEMI checklist for facilitating cumulative knowledge
Behav Res Methods. 2024 Apr 16. doi: 10.3758/s13428-024-02373-9. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMeta-analysis is often recognized as the highest level of evidence due to its notable advantages. Therefore, ensuring the precision of its findings is of utmost importance. Insufficient reporting in primary studies poses challenges for meta-analysts, hindering study identification, effect size estimation, and meta-regression analyses. This manuscript provides concise guidelines for the comprehensive reporting of qualitative and quantitative aspects in primary studies. Adhering to these guidelines may help researchers enhance the ...

Co-occurring dominance and ideal point processes: A general IRTree framework for multidimensional item responding
Behav Res Methods. 2024 Apr 16. doi: 10.3758/s13428-024-02405-4. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTResponding to rating scale items is a multidimensional process, since not only the substantive trait being measured but also additional personal characteristics can affect the respondents' category choices. A flexible model class for analyzing such multidimensional responses are IRTree models, in which rating responses are decomposed into a sequence of sub-decisions. Different response processes can be involved in item responding both sequentially across those sub-decisions and as co-occurring processes within sub-decisions. In t...

Different self-damaging behaviours, similar motives? Testing measurement invariance of motives for nonsuicidal self-injury, disordered eating and substance misuse
CONCLUSIONS: Results suggest that common motives underlie distinct SDBs and that they can be adequately assessed using a single self-report inventory. However, certain motives are more relevant to some SDBs than others, with restrictive eating being the most motivationally distinct SDB. This knowledge can inform transdiagnostic models and interventions for SDBs.PMID:38623602 | DOI:10.1111/bjc.12467 (Source: The British Journal of Clinical Psychology)

Adjustment and homesickness in hospitalised children: A systematic review
The objectives of this review were to synthesise the qualitative and quantitative literature on psychosocial factors associated with hospital adjustment and to identify risk and protective factors that influence the adjustment process. The literature search (1980 to February 2024: CINAHL / Embase / Medline / PsychINFO and Web of Science databases) identified thirty-four studies. Poor hospital adjustment, anxiety, depression and homesickness, were reported by the majority of hospitalised children. Several demographic and psychosocial factors were identified in the quantitative synthesis to contribute to poor adjustment. Chi...

A survey of experimental stimulus presentation code sharing in major areas of psychology
Behav Res Methods. 2024 Apr 16. doi: 10.3758/s13428-024-02390-8. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTComputer code plays a vital role in modern science, from the conception and design of experiments through to final data analyses. Open sharing of code has been widely discussed as being advantageous to the scientific process, allowing experiments to be more easily replicated, helping with error detection, and reducing wasted effort and resources. In the case of psychology, the code used to present stimuli is a fundamental component of many experiments. It is not known, however, the degree to which researchers are sharing this typ...

Honour, acculturation and well-being: Evidence from the UK and Canada
We examined our questions among groups of immigrants originating from honour (Studies 1 and 2) and dignity cultural groups (Study 1) and from first- and second-generation immigrants (Study 3). Overall, despite some significant associations at the bivariate level between honour and acculturation outcomes, findings provided mixed support for the claim that honour (measured as concerns and cultural codes) plays a significant role in immigrant acculturation above and beyond commonly studied predictors of immigrant adaptation.PMID:38623702 | DOI:10.1111/bjso.12751 (Source: The British Journal of Social Psychology)

Refining Bayesian hierarchical MPT modeling: Integrating prior knowledge and ordinal expectations
Behav Res Methods. 2024 Apr 16. doi: 10.3758/s13428-024-02370-y. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMultinomial processing tree (MPT) models are a broad class of statistical models used to test sophisticated psychological theories. The research questions derived from these theories often go beyond simple condition effects on parameters and involve ordinal expectations (e.g., the same-direction effect on the memory parameter is stronger in one experimental condition than another) or disordinal expectations (e.g., the effect reverses in one experimental condition). Here, we argue that by refining common modeling practices, Bayesi...
