non-practicing MD wanting to make transition to PsyD/PhD
Hi, I have a MD but I did not finish residency. After stepping away for a few years, I am heavily considering going into Clinical Psychology, which I have become increasingly passionate about in the last few years. My only experiences with mental illness include: my rotation in Psychiatry in med school (which I found very subpar and disappointing; no wonder the vast majority of medical professionals are ill equipped for mental health situations), and some consulting work for a... FTC Bans Noncompetes
FTC Announces Rule Banning Noncompetes | Federal Trade Commission I imagine group practices will be less likely to hire, and more private practices would be created overall. Unsure about hospital employment for psychologists? I know noncompetes are ubiquitous among hospital-employed physicians. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Neuropsych Testing
I am a licensed clinical psychologist in NYS as well as a school psychologist with over 10 years of child assessment experience. I was recently contacted by an assessment agency who offered me a fee to conduct a neuropsychological evaluation on a child suspected of a learning disability. Am I not allowed to do this because I am not a board approved neuropsych? Nor am I under the supervision of one. I don’t have additional post-doc specializations but have administered many tests typically... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Mental Health Tech vs EMT
I am interested in mental health and psychiatry. I have over a year of experience as a research assistant in a mental health psychology lab, and over a year in a neuroscience lab to back that statement up. I would consider myself more well-informed about mental health and illnesses that most, so I believe I can make a compelling argument about my interest in psychiatry. It is probable that my personal statement will revolve around this interest in some fashion (although I recognize the value... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Psychotherapy certifications: The good, the bad, and the grifty
Setting aside 95% of the PESI catalogue for trainings in internal polyvagal complex intergenerational trauma systems therapy that the biased science can't possibly measure, how necessary are psychotherapy certifications for responsible, independent practice? For instance, if I've received training and supervision in both cognitive therapy and mindfulness skills, do I really need to now become certified in mindfulness based cognitive therapy or can I just put those two things together after... Getting better at socratic questioning
Guys, my doctorate is in school psychology and I mostly do pediatric psychology, testin' for neurodevelopmental disorders, and parent management training/behavioral consultation. I do a little therapy here and there (like maybe four patients/week. I want to get better at socratic questioning. I'm wondering if you had any mental tricks, acronyms, worksheets, books, trainings, etc., that have helped you do it effectively with patient. I've been licensed nearly six years and don't have it... Dissertation Grant Funding - Is it worth it?
3rd year PhD student here (neuropsych focused) wanting to obtain some form of funding for my dissertation. Can anyone speak into their experience of applying for an F31 and if it is worth it to be competitive for internship and post doc with protected research time? I am already in the data collection phase of my project and will still be collecting data next year, but given how drawn out the grant application process is, I'm not sure if I am too far along in my research. It would be nice to... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Career change options
I have been working as a psychotherapist for the past 15 years but would like to do something different. I also teach occasionally as an adjunct however do not see this as a main career due to the low pay and precarious working conditions. What are other work options with a doctorate in psychology in the US? I am leaning towards assessment, however I have never focused on assessment so I would probability need further training. Where would be a good starting point? I looked at Pearson's... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

University of San Francisco or La Salle for PsyD?
Hi! I'm currently deciding between La Salle University and University of San Francisco for my PsyD Program (I know, opposite ends of the country...). I was wondering if anyone had any opinions on the reputations of the school and which would be better in terms of strength of the program, reputation, and opportunity. Or if anyone attends/attended these programs and has any thoughts - let me know! Thank you so much! All thoughts appreciated (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Some things NOT to do
From a recent case: -Don't refer to yourself with a made-up title, especially one that is misleading about your licensure status (e.g., "Licensed Clinical Psychologist"). Especially don't do so if you are not an appropriately Licensed Psychologist-Provider who is properly trained and credentialed to complete a diagnostic assessment, but rather hold a different license (e.g., Licensed Educational Psychologist) that does not allow for independent diagnostic evals outside of an educational...
