Risk factors for hepatocellular carcinoma associated with hepatitis C genotype 3 infection: A systematic review
CONCLUSION: Although, studies have shown that HCV genotype-3 infection is an independent risk factor for end-stage liver disease, HCC, and liver-related death, there is a lack of evidence for specific risk factors for HCC secondary to HCV genotype-3. Only cirrhosis and age have demonstrated an association; however, the number of studies is very small, and more research is required to investigate risk factors for HCC secondary to HCV genotype-3.PMID:38660636 | PMC:PMC11037048 | DOI:10.4251/wjgo.v16.i4.1596 (Source: Cancer Control)

A Deeper Depth of Response After Salvage Therapy Improves Outcomes of Autologous Stem Cell Transplantation in Relapsed Lymphoma and the Feasibility of Non-controlled Rate Freezing of Peripheral Blood Stem Cells
Conclusion High-dose therapy and autologous stem cell transplantation in low- to middle-income countries are limited to relatively younger patients, potentially curative conditions such as lymphoma, and predominantly after achieving a complete response to salvage therapy due to limited resources. Due to these factors, our study shows excellent response rates and survival outcomes compared to internationally published data. Engraftment was also excellent and comparable to published data despite the non-controlled rate freezing of peripheral blood stem cells.PMID:38659569 | PMC:PMC11039573 | DOI:10.7759/cureus.56851 (Source: Cancer Control)

China set to fetch first rocks from mysterious far side of the Moon
There’s a giant hole on the backside of the Moon. The South Pole–Aitken (SPA) Basin, the Moon’s largest and oldest impact crater, is more than 2500 kilometers wide and 8 kilometers deep—nearly big enough to swallow two Indias and hide the Himalayas. Now, China plans to land in it. The basin may have been blasted out during a barrage of asteroids that pummeled Earth and other inner Solar System bodies billions of years ago, and scientists have long wanted to get their hands on SPA rocks to test the idea. The China National Space Administration (CNSA) aims to provide them with the Chang’e-6 mission, which sci...

Environmental Surveillance of Poliovirus and Non-polio Enteroviruses in Iran, 2017 –2023: First Report of Imported Wild Poliovirus Type 1 Since 2000
AbstractIn Iran, which is at high risk of the Wild Poliovirus (WPV) and Vaccine-Derived Poliovirus (VDPV) importation due to its neighborhood with two polio endemic countries, Pakistan and Afghanistan, Environmental Surveillance (ES) was established in November 2017. Sistan-Balouchestan province was chosen for the ES due to its vicinity with Pakistan and Afghanistan. Five sewage collection sites in 4 cities (Zahedan, Zabol, Chabahar and Konarak) were selected in the high-risk areas. Since the establishment of ES in November 2017 till the end of 2023, 364 sewage specimens were collected and analyzed. The ES detected poliovi...

Genomic characterization of human respiratory syncytial virus circulating in Islamabad, Pakistan, during an outbreak in 2022-2023
In this study, conducted at the National Institute of Health, Islamabad, during an outbreak of human respiratory syncytial virus (hRSV) from December 2022 to January 2023, the first whole-genome sequences of hRSV isolates from Islamabad, Pakistan, were determined. Out of 10 positive samples, five were sequenced, revealing the presence of two genotypes: RSV-A (GA2.3.5, ON1 strain) and RSV-B (GB5.0.5.a, BA-10 strain). A rare non-synonymous substitution (E232G) in G the protein and N276S in the F protein were found in RSV-A. In RSV-B, the unique mutations K191R, Q209R, and I206M were found in the F protein. These mutations co...

Non-compliant packaging and illicit smokeless tobacco in Bangladesh, India and Pakistan: findings of a pack analysis
Conclusions Weak and poorly enforced ST control policies may be slowing the progress of tobacco control in South Asia. Standardised regulations are required for packaging and labelling ST. Improving compliance and reducing sale of cheap illicit products may require business licensing and market surveillance. (Source: Tobacco Control)

No use of schools: the heterogenous effects of conflict in Pakistan on enrolment rates of boys and girls
Abbas Ali Gillani, Khadija M. Bari Journal of Aggression, Conflict and Peace Research, Vol. ahead-of-print, No. ahead-of-print, pp.- The purpose of this study is to estimate the impact of conflict witnessed in Pakistan on the enrolment rates of boys and girls. Pakistan has the world’s second-highest number of out-of-school children, with an estimated 22.8 million children aged 5–16 years not attending school.By merging data on violence with the data on enrolment rates, this paper finds that exposure to violence is correlated with a decline in overall district-level enrolment rates in the short run at primary-level sch...

Foot-and-mouth disease seroprevalence is higher in young female crossbred sheep and goats compared to their counterparts in the border area between Pakistan and Afghanistan
CONCLUSIONS: This study showed that FMD is highly prevalent in sheep and goats in the border areas of Pakistan and Afghanistan. Therefore, outbreak investigation teams should be arranged at the border level to develop FMD risk-based surveillance and control plans for small ruminants in order to mitigate infection risks.PMID:38626798 | DOI:10.2460/ajvr.23.12.0279 (Source: American Journal of Veterinary Research)
