Delving the vitamin D receptor variation and expression profiles in the context of type 2 diabetes among families
CONCLUSION: A linkage was found among the FDRs with probands. Variation in the gene VDR at loci rs731236 and rs2228570 was associated with familial T2D. However further research is required to explore more genetic factors that could influence T2D risks in families.PMID:38622480 | DOI:10.1007/s11033-024-09387-8 (Source: Molecular Biology Reports)

Predictors of quitting smoking behavior: evidence from Pakistan
This study attempts to identify factors that significantly encourage the cessation of smoking in the context of Pakistan. The study distributes a modified questionnaire among 421 respondents (current as well as former smokers) in the capital city of Pakistan, Islamabad. The binary regression method was employed to data for analyzing predictors of making quit attempts and successful smoking cessation. The result indicates that respondents having strong intentions to quit, high socioeconomic status, low nicotine dependency, and past quit attempts, and those having no-smoking friends, are more likely to quit cigarette smoking...

Ethnic inequities in 6-8 week baby check coverage in England 2006-2021: a cohort study using the Clinical Practice Research Datalink
CONCLUSIONS: Coordinated action at the level of integrated commissioning boards, primary care networks and GP practices is required to better understand the reasons behind these inequities and redress the persistent disparities in 6-8 week baby check coverage.PMID:38621807 | DOI:10.3399/BJGP.2023.0593 (Source: The British Journal of General Practice)

Evaluation of irrigation, drinking, and risk indices for water quality parameters of alpine lakes
This study examined the water characteristics of various alpine lakes in Gilgit-Baltistan, Northern Pakistan. For this purpose, water was sampled and investigated for basic parameters, anions, and cations using the multi-parameter analyzers and atomic absorption spectrophotometer. Physicochemical parameters of alpine lakes were noted under the World Health Organization water guidelines, except for fluoride (F−) and turbidity in 4.3% and 36% of samples, respectively. Water quality index (WQI) classified samples (93%) as excellent and good quality (7%). Results showed maximum chronic daily intake values (0.14  ± 0.01Â...

Emerging threats of high biofilm formation and antibiotic resistance in clinical methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) isolates from Pakistan
CONCLUSIONS: Clinical MRSA strains exhibit a substantial potential for biofilm formation, contributing to a resistant phenotype. Routine antibiotic testing in clinical settings that overlook the biofilm aspect may lead to the failure of empiric antibiotic therapy.PMID:38614413 | DOI:10.1016/j.meegid.2024.105592 (Source: Infection, Genetics and Evolution)

Catastrophic impact of 1947 partition of India on people's health
CONCLUSION: The review demonstrates the apathy by the contemporary international scientific research community on the social as well as economic damage caused by the partition of India. We suggest that the international scientific and research community should play the role of vigilante and fact finder to unearth the facets of mass human tragedy and its long-term consequences so that global consciousness is awakened, and help and aid flows when it is most needed.PMID:38605803 | PMC:PMC11006024 | DOI:10.4103/jfmpc.jfmpc_985_23 (Source: Primary Care)

Social Support and Spousal Relationship Quality Improves Responsiveness among Anxious Mothers
Child Psychiatry Hum Dev. 2024 Apr 13. doi: 10.1007/s10578-024-01702-5. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMaternal responsiveness, a mother's ability to consistently identify infant cues and then act on them, is critical for healthy child development. A woman's social support and spousal relationship may affect responsiveness to an infant, especially among mothers with anxiety. We assessed how social support and spousal relationship quality is associated with responsiveness among anxious mothers, and if postpartum depression (PPD) moderated these associations. Cross-sectional data were collected from 2019 to 2022 in a public h...
