Navigating Supply Chain Disruptions of Iodinated Contrast Agent for Neuroimaging and How Business Intelligence Can Help the Decision Process [ADULT BRAIN]
SUMMARY: A recent coronavirus disease 2019–related shutdown of the main production facility of iohexol in China has led to massive shortages of iodinated contrast material across the globe. This shortage has also jeopardized neuroimaging. In this article, we describe remedies to reduce iodinated contrast material use for stroke imaging, which is its primary use in neuroimaging, that we have implemented in our hospital network. Quantifying Individual-Level Inaccuracy in Glomerular Filtration Rate Estimation : A Cross-Sectional Study
CONCLUSION: A substantial individual-level discrepancy exists between the mGFR and the eGFR. Laboratories reporting eGFR should consider including the extent of this uncertainty to avoid misinterpretation of eGFR as an mGFR replacement.PRIMARY FUNDING SOURCE: National Institutes of Health.PMID:35785532 | DOI:10.7326/M22-0610 (Source: Annals of Internal Medicine)

Marked bilateral global persistent CT nephrogram 48  h after percutaneous coronary intervention with contrast-induced nephropathy requiring transient hemodialysis with severe cardiac dysfunction
AbstractAn iodinated contrast medium (CM) is generally excreted into the urinary tract within 3  min after administration. However, some cases present a persistent kidney nephrogram several hours after administration of CM. This phenomenon seems to be associated with the development and acceleration of contrast-induced nephropathy (CIN). A 74-year-old woman with chronic kidney disease and a v ery low ejection fraction (EF) (11%) was admitted to Sapporo Medical University Hospital because of heart failure. Coronary angiography revealed occlusion of the left anterior descending artery (LAD) on day 21 of admission. Percutane...

IJERPH, Vol. 19, Pages 7077: Contrast Media Adverse Drug Reactions in Highly Polluted Environment
This study shows relatively high occurrence of respiratory tract related ADRs in Wrocław. We also prove that it is possible to choose the most optimal contrast agent for patients with specific organ site problems to omit the possible complications. Continuous Infusion of Iohexol to Monitor Perioperative Glomerular Filtration Rate
Int J Nephrol. 2022 May 24;2022:8267829. doi: 10.1155/2022/8267829. eCollection 2022.ABSTRACTContinuous monitoring of the glomerular filtration rate (GFR) in the perioperative setting could provide valuable information about acute kidney injury risk for both clinical and research purposes. This pilot study aimed to demonstrate that GFR measurement by a continuous 72 hrs iohexol infusion in patients undergoing colorectal cancer surgery is feasible. Four patients undergoing robot-assisted colorectal cancer surgery were recruited from elective surgery listings. GFR was determined preoperatively by the single-sample iohexol cl...

Quercetin improves contrast-induced acute kidney injury through the HIF-1 α/lncRNA NEAT1/HMGB1 pathway
CONCLUSIONS: Quercetin diminished cell injury and apoptosis in CI-AKI cell mode via the inhibition of HIF-1α on the lncRNA NEAT1/HMGB1 signalling pathway, offering a potential novel therapeutic target for CI-AKI therapy.PMID:35587223 | DOI:10.1080/13880209.2022.2058558 (Source: Pharmaceutical Biology)

Short-Term Mitigation Steps During the Iohexol Contrast Shortage: A Single Institution ’s Approach
In the United States, over 40% of CT examinations use iodinated contrast agents (ICAs) for better visualization and assessment of pathophysiological processes [1]. Recent COVID-19 related work slowdowns in Shanghai, China, have affected operations of General Electric (GE) factories and reduced production of Omnipaque (iohexol, GE Healthcare, Milwaukee, Wisconsin) contrast agents, with estimates that the factory will remain at reduced capacity through the end of June 2022, and shortages potentially persisting through the middle to end of the summer [2]. Combinations of three different injected doses of iohexol (450, 600, and 750 mg/kg) and injection durations (5, 10, and 15 seconds) were used. The CT values at the aorta, portal vein, and hepatic parenchyma were measured to create a time-density curve, and CTP parameters were measured s...
