Assessing the skin irritation and sensitizing potential of concentrates of water chlorinated in the presence of iodinated X-ray contrast media
In this study, source water containing one of these four ICM was chlorinated; non-chlorinated ICM-containing water samples served as controls. Reactions were conducted at an ICM concentration of 5µM and a chlorine dose of 100µM over 72hr. Water concentrates (20,000-fold) were prepared by XAD-resin/ethyl acetate extraction and DMSO solvent exchange. We used the MatTek® reconstituted human epithelial skin irritation model to evaluate the water concentrates and also assessed the dermal irritation and sensitization potential of these concentrates using the LLNA:BrdU ELISA in BALB/c mice. None of the water concentrates teste...

Removal of carbamazepine, venlafaxine and iohexol from wastewater effluent using coupled microalgal-bacterial biofilm
Chemosphere. 2022 Sep 10:136399. doi: 10.1016/j.chemosphere.2022.136399. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTWe evaluated the removal capacity of a coupled microalgal-bacterial biofilm (CMBB) to eliminate three recalcitrant pharmaceuticals. The CMBB's efficiency, operating at different biofilm concentrations, with or without light, was compared and analyzed to correlate these parameters to pharmaceutical removal and their effect on the microorganism community. Removal rates changed with changing pharmaceutical and biofilm concentrations: higher biofilm concentrations presented higher removal. Removal of 82-94% venlafaxine and 18...

Risk factors of anaphylaxis in Korea: Identifying drug-induced anaphylaxis culprits using big data
Drug-induced anaphylaxis is a fatal medical condition whose incidence has been increasing continuously. Due to differences between genetic backgrounds and health care systems, different populations may be prone to various causative drugs. Using the Health Insurance Service and Assessment Service database, we investigated culprit drugs for drug-induced anaphylaxis and common medication risk factors in the Korean general population. We collected medical prescription histories within 3 days prior to anaphylaxis between January 2011 and December 2019 from the HIRA database. Designed as a case-crossover study, the attributable ...

Reliability of glomerular filtration rate estimating formulas compared to iohexol plasma clearance in critically ill children
Conclusion: In this proof-of-concept study, eGFR formulas were found to be largely inaccurate in the PICU population. Clinicians should therefore use these formulas with caution to guide drug dosing and therapeutic interventions in critically ill children. More research in subgroup populations is warranted to conclude on generalizability of these study findings. ClinicalTrials.gov NCT05179564, registered retrospectively on January 5, 2022.What is Known:• Both acute kidney injury and augmented renal clearance may be present in PICU patients and warrant adaptation of therapy, including drug dosing.• Biomarker-based eGFR...

Deep learning reconstruction allows for usage of contrast agent of lower concentration for coronary CTA than filtered back projection and hybrid iterative reconstruction
CONCLUSION: We suggest that using DLR with Iohexol-240 contrast media is preferable to hybrid IR with Iohexol-300 contrast media in coronary CTA.PMID:35979586 | DOI:10.1177/02841851221118476 (Source: Acta Radiologica)

Medical contrast agents as promising tools for biomacromolecular SAXS experiments
Small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) has become an indispensable tool in structural biology, complementing atomic-resolution techniques. It is sensitive to the electron-density difference between solubilized biomacromolecules and the buffer, and provides information on molecular masses, particle dimensions and interactions, low-resolution conformations and pair distance-distribution functions. When SAXS data are recorded at multiple contrasts, i.e. at different solvent electron densities, it is possible to probe, in addition to their overall shape, the internal electron-density profile of biomacromolecular assemblies. Unfor...

A novel contrast-induced acute kidney injury mouse model based on low-osmolar contrast medium
This study provides a novel, efficient and reproducible CI-AKI model which was developed in mouse by administrating a low-osmolar contrast medium (LOCM). First of all, we applied the frequently used pretreatments (uninephrectomy and water deprivation), which combined with HOCM on rats could induce CI-AKI, on mice with LOCM. Secondly, we attempted to find a novel pretreatment suitable for mouse and LOCM by combining two classic pretreatments(uninephrectomy, water deprivation and furosemide administration). Finally, we evaluate the kidney damage of the novel model. We found that this mouse model possessed a significant reduc...

Identification of Metabolite Markers Associated with Kidney Function
CONCLUSIONS: Global metabolite profiling of serum yielded potentially valuable biomarkers of different stages of CKD. Additionally, these potential biomarkers might provide insight into the underlying pathophysiologic processes that contribute to the progression of CKD as well as improve GFR estimation.PMID:35928631 | PMC:PMC9345691 | DOI:10.1155/2022/6190333 (Source: Journal of Immunology Research)
