Patient-initiated follow-up in gynaecology: Patient and clinician views
Outpatient hospital appointments in the UK have almost doubled in number in the last decade. Two-thirds of outpatient appointments in the UK are for follow-up after a previous consultation [1,2]. Up to 20  % of these appointments are unattended (patient did not attend), impacting valuable resources and impacting long waiting times and declining patient satisfaction [3]. The NHS in the UK spends £8 billion a year running outpatient services [2]. Changes to service delivery in order to curb this dem and to sustainable levels are a key area of interest [4,5].
