Targeting methanotrophs and isolation of a novel psychrophilic Methylobacter species from a terrestrial Arctic alkaline methane seep in Lagoon Pingo, Central Spitsbergen (78 ° N)
Antonie Van Leeuwenhoek. 2024 Mar 22;117(1):60. doi: 10.1007/s10482-024-01953-1.ABSTRACTThe microbial diversity associated with terrestrial groundwater seepage through permafrost soils is tightly coupled to the geochemistry of these fluids. Terrestrial alkaline methane seeps from Lagoon Pingo, Central Spitsbergen (78°N) in Norway, with methane-saturated and oxygen-limited groundwater discharge providing a potential habitat for methanotrophy. Here, we report on the microbial community's comparative analyses and distribution patterns at two sites close to Lagoon Pingo's methane emission source. To target methane-oxidizing b...

Higher educational attainment associated with higher confidence in influenza vaccination in Norway
CONCLUSIONS: We observed an increase in confidence in influenza vaccination over the seasons examined in the study. However, the increase has not been equal in all groups and there is a clear educational gradient in influenza vaccine confidence. These findings indicate that despite efforts to increase influenza coverage over several years, the implemented measures have failed to reach all parts of the population.PMID:38519343 | DOI:10.1016/j.vaccine.2024.03.049 (Source: Vaccine)

Discrimination and health: A cross-sectional study comparing Muslims with other-religious
CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that perceived discrimination does play a role in health among minorities with an immigrant background in Norway, regardless of religion. However, the association between perceived discrimination and poor health seems to be stronger among Muslims, especially Norwegian-born Muslims.PMID:38517101 | DOI:10.1177/14034948231225561 (Source: Scandinavian Journal of Public Health)

How Do Child Welfare Workers Understand and Practice Child Participation?
ABSTRACTChild participation is strongly emphasized as a value and a right in the Norwegian child welfare (CW) system. Based on focus group interviews with 24 CW employees, we explore how CW workers understand and practice child participation in various work phases: assessment; supportive measures in the home; out-of-home placements. Two main forms of participation were identified: indirect participation, where the child is observed or communicates with other professionals, and direct participation, where the child speaks to a CW worker. The topics of conversations with children are divided into two categories: general topi...

Comparison of Systems and Outcomes for Safeguarding Children in Australia and Norway: A Decade of Rapid Change
ABSTRACTUsing aggregated national data, this paper re-examines the outcomes of the Australian and Norwegian protective systems during the past decade and compares it to the trends and issues identified in our earlier 2012 study. We outline the context of increased service demand affecting both countries with rapid expansion and reform of their policies and approaches. A convergence has been occurring regarding their focus upon risk and its relationship with family support. However, in Australia, there was an increasing attempt to provide greater support and reduce its rate of investigation of notifications, but there was i...

Dietary guidance from GPs - what do patients report?
In this study, we surveyed the extent to which the subject of diet was raised by patients in general practice and which patients desired such discussions.MATERIAL AND METHOD: We conducted a questionnaire-based cross-sectional study of patients ≥ 18 years of age at GP practices in Western Norway in 2022. The questionnaire consisted of nine questions about dietary knowledge, the desire to receive dietary guidance and lose weight, and medication use. Logistic regression was used to identify groups more likely to report a desire to receive guidance on how diet affects health.RESULTS: A total of 2105 of the 2531 (83 %) invite...
