Smoking among immigrants in Norway: a cross-sectional study
CONCLUSIONS: Policies are warranted that target smoking among immigrant men in general, and particularly among men from Turkey, Poland, and Vietnam, as well as for women from Turkey, Bosnia-Herzegovina, and Poland.PMID:38465847 | DOI:10.1177/14034948231221178 (Source: Scandinavian Journal of Public Health)

Worker and workplace determinants of employment exit: a register study
Conclusion Only a minority of our sample of workers with chronic illness experienced labour market exclusion. Targeted measures should be considered towards workers with poor mental health and/or low formal skills. Chronically ill workers within public administration have the best labour market prospects, while workplaces within the education branch have an unfulfilled potential. (Source: BMJ Open)

A microfluidic chip-based capillary zone electrophoresis-mass spectrometry method for measuring adenosine 5'-Triphosphate and its similar nucleotide analogues
Anal Chim Acta. 2024 Apr 15;1298:342400. doi: 10.1016/j.aca.2024.342400. Epub 2024 Feb 21.ABSTRACTBACKGROUND: Extracellular ATP is involved in disorders that cause inflammation of the airways and cough, thus limiting its release has therapeutic benefits. Standard luminescence-based ATP assays measure levels indirectly through enzyme degradation and do not provide a simultaneous readout for other nucleotide analogues. Conversely, mass spectrometry can provide direct ATP measurements, however, common RPLC and HILIC methods face issues because these molecules are unstable, metal-sensitive analytes which are often poorly retai...

New insights from an eight-year study on per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances in an urban terrestrial ecosystem
Environ Pollut. 2024 Mar 6:123735. doi: 10.1016/j.envpol.2024.123735. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPer- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) were analysed in a high number of terrestrial samples of soil, earthworm, bird eggs and liver from red fox and brown rat in an urban area in Norway from 2013 to 2020. PFOS and the long chain PFCAs were the most dominating compounds in all samples, proving their ubiquitous distribution. Other less studied compounds such as 6:2 FTS were first and foremost detected in earthworm. 8:2 FTS was found in many samples of fieldfare egg, sparrowhawk egg and earthworm, where the eggs had highes...

Child Welfare Workers' Perceptions of Intimate Partner Violence and Mandatory Reporting in Norway
ABSTRACTIntimate partner violence (IPV) is a major criminal, social and public health problem. As one effort to prevent IPV and intimate partner homicide, several countries have adopted legislation requiring professionals to disclose IPV to the authorities (commonly referred to as mandatory reporting). The child welfare service (CWS) is centrally positioned for detecting, reporting and preventing IPV, but there is limited empirical knowledge concerning how the service handles IPV cases or of social workers' awareness of mandatory reporting of IPV. Using qualitative interviews, we explore how CWS workers in Norway describe ...

Understanding and responding to racism and the provision of culturally safe care by interdisciplinary health professionals in the aged care sector in regional, rural and remote areas: a scoping review
CONCLUSION: While work is beginning on developing standards for cultural safety training in an Australian context, there are also opportunities to consider how these should be applied or adapted to residential and community aged care to best meet the needs of a diverse consumer base and workforce.PMID:38449108 | DOI:10.22605/RRH8045 (Source: Rural and Remote Health)

A man in his sixties with life-threatening febrile illness after travel abroad
Tidsskr Nor Laegeforen. 2024 Feb 15;144(3). doi: 10.4045/tidsskr.23.0614. Print 2024 Feb 27.ABSTRACTBACKGROUND: African sleeping sickness is a neglected tropical disease seldom seen in European travellers.CASE PRESENTATION: While working in Eastern Africa, a Norwegian man in his sixties developed weakness and fever. He was prescribed doxycycline after a negative malaria rapid test. On the third day of illness he returned to Norway and was admitted to the hospital upon arrival. On admission he was somnolent with fever, tachypnoea, tachycardia, jaundice, a hyperaemic rash, oliguria and haematuria. Blood tests revealed leukop...
