Contemporary maternal and fetal outcomes in the treatment of LQTS during pregnancy: Is nadolol bad for the fetus?
β-Blocker therapy, specifically nadolol, is the recommended treatment for long QT syndrome (LQTS). Previous studies assessing maternal and fetal outcomes were published before the nadolol era. (Source: Heart Rhythm)

P26 Could the formulation and/or method of administration of oral nadolol have a clinically significant impact on the dose delivered to the patient
Conclusion In this case, the patient was complex and unstable, and her clinical condition may well have contributed to the increase in ectopy experienced. However, the work done by regional QC identified the risk of inaccuracy and/or variation in the dose of nadolol delivered using different formulations and/or methods of administration. The solubility limit of nadolol in water is estimated to be ~8mg/ml. Dispersed oral solutions must be thoroughly mixed prior to patient use especially if a proportional dose is required. Inconsistency of the dose of nadolol delivered should be considered when using this method. Further, th...

Seawater fungi-derived compound screening to identify novel small molecules against dengue virus NS5 methyltransferase and NS2B/NS3 protease
Inform Med Unlocked. 2022;30:100932. doi: 10.1016/j.imu.2022.100932. Epub 2022 Mar 26.ABSTRACTDengue fever is a virus spread by mosquitoes that has no effective treatment or vaccination. Several dengue cases combined with the current COVID-19 pandemic, exacerbates this problem. Two proteins, NS5 methyltransferase and NS2B/NS3 primary protease complexes, are crucial for dengue viral replication and are the target sites for antiviral development. Thus, this study screened published literature and identified 162 marine fungus-derived compounds with active bioavailability. Following Lipinski's rules and antiviral property pred...

An International Multi-Center Cohort Study on β-blockers for the Treatment of Symptomatic Children with Catecholaminergic Polymorphic Ventricular Tachycardia
Conclusions: B1-selective BBs were associated with a significantly higher risk for arrhythmic events in symptomatic children with CPVT compared with non-selective BBs, specifically nadolol. Nadolol, or propranolol if nadolol is unavailable, should be the preferred BB for treating symptomatic children with CPVT.PMID:34874747 | DOI:10.1161/CIRCULATIONAHA.121.056018 (Source: Circulation)

Intrauterine Growth Retardation in Pregnant Women with Long QT Syndrome Treated with Beta-Receptor Blockers
Neonatology. 2021 Jun 29:1-10. doi: 10.1159/000516845. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPregnant women with inherited long QT syndrome (iLQTS) are at an increased risk for preterm delivery and intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR) due to their underlying disease. Additionally, they are at a risk of arrhythmogenic events, particularly during the postpartum period because of physiological changes and increased emotional/physical stress. β-receptor blockers can effectively prevent life-threatening Torsades de Pointes ventricular tachycardia and they are the treatment of choice in iLQTS. Use of β-receptor blockers in pregnancy...

The cytotoxic and apoptotic effects of beta-blockers with different selectivity on cancerous and healthy lung cell lines
Mol Biol Rep. 2021 Jun 16. doi: 10.1007/s11033-021-06409-7. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTβ-blockers having specific affinities to β-adrenergic receptors are routinely used to treat cardiovascular problems. Additionally, it has been demonstrated that these drugs can be effective in treating apoptosis-related diseases. The current study was conducted to investigate the cytotoxic and apoptotic effects of β-1 selective esmolol, β-2 selective ICI-118,551, and non-selective nadolol blockers on the cancerous and healthy lung cells. MTT test was used to evaluate cytotoxicity. Apoptotic actions were examined by using Annexin V...
