Several lines of antioxidant defense against oxidative stress: antioxidant enzymes, nanomaterials with multiple enzyme-mimicking activities, and low-molecular-weight antioxidants
Arch Toxicol. 2024 Mar 14. doi: 10.1007/s00204-024-03696-4. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTReactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive nitrogen species (RNS) are well recognized for playing a dual role, since they can be either deleterious or beneficial to biological systems. An imbalance between ROS production and elimination is termed oxidative stress, a critical factor and common denominator of many chronic diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular diseases, metabolic diseases, neurological disorders (Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases), and other disorders. To counteract the harmful effects of ROS, organisms have evolved...

Attenuating the Polysulfide Shuttle Mechanism by Separator Coating
Chemphyschem. 2024 Mar 14:e202300858. doi: 10.1002/cphc.202300858. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTLithium-sulfur batteries have a high energy density but lack cycle stability to reach market maturity. This is mainly due to the polysulfide shuttle mechanism, i.e., the leaching of active material from the cathode into the electrolyte and subsequent side reactions. We demonstrate how to attenuate the polysulfide shuttle by magnetron sputtering molybdenum oxysulfide, manganese oxide, and chromium oxide onto microporous polypropylene separators. The morphology of the amorphous coatings was analyzed by SEM and XRD. Electrochemica...

Characteristics, source analysis, and health risk assessment of potentially toxic elements pollution in soil of dense molybdenum tailing ponds area in central China
AbstractThe issue of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) contamination of regional soil caused by mining activities and tailings accumulation has attracted wide attention all over the world. The East Qinling is one of the three main molybdenum mines in the world, and the concentration of PTEs such as Hg, Pb and Cu in the slag is high. Quantifying the amount of PTEs contamination in soil and identifying potential sources of contamination is vital for soil environmental management. In the present investigation, the pollution levels of 8 PTEs in the Qinling molybdenum tailings intensive area were quantitatively identified. Addi...

Phase ‐Tunable Molybdenum Boride Ceramics as an Emerging Sensitive and Reliable SERS Platform in Harsh Environments
In this study, the SERS effect of molybdenum boride ceramic powders is presented with an enhancement factor of 5 orders, which is comparable to conventional noble metal substrates. The molybdenum boride powders synthesized through liquid-phase precursor and carbothermal reduction have β-MoB, MoB2, and Mo2B5 phases. Among these phases, β-MoB demonstrates the most significant SERS activity, with a detection limit for rhodamine 6G (R6G) molecules of 10−9 m. The impressive SERS enhancement can be attributed to strong molecule interactions and prominent charge interactions between R6G and the various phases of molybdenum b...

Co-exposure to Environmentally Relevant Levels of Molybdenum and Cadmium Induces Oxidative Stress and Ferroptosis in the Ovary of Ducks
Biol Trace Elem Res. 2024 Mar 12. doi: 10.1007/s12011-024-04144-1. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTExcessive doses of molybdenum (Mo) and cadmium (Cd) have toxic effects on animals. Nevertheless, the reproductive toxicity elicited by Mo and Cd co-exposure remains obscure. To evaluate the co-induce toxic impacts of Mo and Cd on ovaries, 8-day-old 40 healthy ducks were stochastically distributed to four groups and were raised a basal diet supplemented with Cd (4 mg/kg Cd) and/or Mo (100 mg/kg Mo). In the 16th week, ovary tissues were gathered. The data revealed that Mo and/or Cd decreased GSH content, CAT, T-SOD, and GSH-Px ac...

Investigating the impact of elevated urinary trace elements on non-alcoholic fatty liver disease using vibration-controlled transient elastography
ConclusionThese findings suggest a positive association between exposure to trace elements in the urine and the risk of NAFLD. Specifically, urinary barium and cesium appeared to have the greatest impact on the risk of NAFLD. These results provide novel insights into the diagnosis and treatment of NAFLD. Synergistic Effect of Co ‐Mo Pinning in Lay‐Structured Oxide Cathode for Enhancing Stability toward Potassium‐Ion Batteries
The [Mn-Co-Mo]O6 octahedra are introduced into P3-K0.45MnO2 to optimize the local electron structure. The [MoO6] propose an empty outermost electrons (4d05s0) orbitals structure and the smaller ionic radius and higher oxidation state can induce a second-order JTE distortion in the adjacent [MnO6] octahedra. Co3+ do not induce Jahn-Teller effects due to the empty electron in eg orbital. AbstractOwing to the high economic efficiency and energy density potential, manganese-based layer-structured oxides have attracted great interests as cathode materials for potassium ion batteries. In order to alleviate the continuous phase t...
