Bridging the divide: unveiling mutual immunological pathways of cancer and pregnancy
AbstractThe juxtaposition of two seemingly disparate physiological phenomena within the human body —namely, cancer and pregnancy—may offer profound insights into the intricate interplay between malignancies and the immune system. Recent investigations have unveiled striking similarities between the pivotal processes underpinning fetal implantation and successful gestation and those governing tumor initiation and progression. Notably, a confluence of features has emerged, underscoring parallels between the microenvironment of tumors and the maternal–fetal interface. These shared attributes encompass establishing vascu...

Blood lead levels in pregnant women and their newborn infants at an Indian teaching hospital
CONCLUSION: In this descriptive study, there was a significant amount of lead transferred from mother to baby through the placenta. All mothers were not exposed to lead-associated industry and most were housewives. This article may be viewed as an eye-opener for understanding the blood lead concentration during pregnancy to avoid abnormal birth outcomes. To minimize exposure to environmental lead, all possible measures should be undertaken.PMID:38482293 | PMC:PMC10931910 | DOI:10.4103/jfmpc.jfmpc_963_23 (Source: Primary Care)

Progestogens in women with threatened miscarriage or recurrent miscarriage: A meta ‐analysis
ConclusionsIn women at increased risk of pregnancy loss, progestogens probably increase live births without increasing adverse maternal and neonatal events. It remains possible that the benefit is restricted to those with prior miscarriages. (Source: Acta Obstetricia et Gynecologica Scandinavica)

Causal associations between Helicobacter pylori infection and pregnancy and neonatal outcomes: a two-sample Mendelian randomization study
ConclusionOur two-sample MR study demonstrated a causal relationship of H. pylori infection with preeclampsia-eclampsia and premature rupture of membranes. The findings confirm the epidemiological evidence on the adverse impact of H. pylori in pregnancy. Further studies are needed to elucidate the pathophysiological mechanisms and assess the effectiveness of pre-pregnancy screening and preventive eradication. Maternal gut microbiota in the health of mothers and offspring: from the perspective of immunology
Due to the physiological alteration during pregnancy, maternal gut microbiota changes following the metabolic processes. Recent studies have revealed that maternal gut microbiota is closely associated with the immune microenvironment in utero during pregnancy and plays a vital role in specific pregnancy complications, including preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, preterm birth and recurrent miscarriages. Some other evidence has also shown that aberrant maternal gut microbiota increases the risk of various diseases in the offspring, such as allergic and neurodevelopmental disorders, through the immune alignment between moth...

Live birth outcomes following single-step blastocyst warming technique – optimizing efficiency without impacting live birth rates
ConclusionsThe study found equivalent outcomes for SS and SW in all parameters except for a slight rise in the rate of multiple gestations. The results suggest that SS warming is an efficient, viable alternative to SW, reducing thaw times without adverse effects on live birth rates or neonatal birth weights. (In)visibilising pregnancy loss in Southern Malawi
Cult Health Sex. 2024 Mar 12:1-16. doi: 10.1080/13691058.2024.2324001. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMiscarriages, stillbirths and neonatal deaths have received limited attention in global health programmes and research, even though pregnancy loss is common, traumatic and stigmatised. This paper seeks to illuminate lived experiences of pregnancy loss in southern Malawi, drawing on findings from semi-structured interviews and focus groups with women who have experienced loss, health professionals and community members, and observations of maternity care. Combining thematic and discourse analysis, we show how societal and me...

A male fetus with cyclopia was discovered after miscarriage: A rare case report from Syria
Key Clinical MessageThis case of alobar holoprosencephaly and cyclopia emphasizes the value of prenatal check-ups, particularly in low-income countries. Early ultrasound diagnosis leads to early gestational termination, preventing psychological trauma for the parents.AbstractAlobar holoprosencephaly is a rare-occurrence malformation with a bad prognosis linked to cyclopia, the most severe cranial feature. Prenatal examinations are essential for identifying these deformities and preventing parental mental health damage. (Source: Clinical Case Reports)

Unlocking the potential of fondaparinux: guideline for optimal usage and clinical suggestions (2023)
Conclusion: The purpose of this guideline is to provide all healthcare providers with high-quality recommendations for the clinical use of fondaparinux and to improve the rational use of the drug in clinical practice. Currently, there is a lack of a dedicated antidote for the management of fondaparinux. The clinical investigation of activated prothrombin complex concentrate (APCC) or recombinant activated factor VII (rFⅦa) as potential reversal agents is still pending. This critical gap necessitates heightened scrutiny and research emphasis, potentially constituting a novel avenue for future inquiries into fondaparinux s...
