The bias of reality
Stephen Colbert -- or rather " Stephen Colbert, " in his former character -- famously said that " Reality has a well-known liberal bias. " And so conservatives must deny reality, which as in the case of anthropogenic climate change means denying scientific findings, and the very integrity and authority of science. But that doesn ' t usually work very well with the courts --viz. the jury award of $1 million to climate scientist Michael Mann -- so they also result to scientific fraud. You may recall that U.S. District Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk ruled to suspend FDA approval of the abortion medication mifepristone, relying largely...

In 1999, Sally Clark was convicted of murder. Her son, Christopher, had been born in September of 1996 and by all accounts, had been a healthy baby. The ERA – An Amendment Who ’s Time Has Come
BY MIKE MAGEE Believe it or not, The Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) was first introduced 100 years ago in 1923. But it was only adopted by Congress by a 2/3 majority vote 49 years later in 1972. That was simply step 1 in the world’s most complex and difficult national constitutional amendment process. Step 2, approval by 3/4 of the states, seemed off to a running start with 28 of the required 38 states signing up that first year. But 1972 was also the year that Phyllis Schafly, an outspoken supporter of patriarchy and stay-at-home motherhood, began echoing her anti-ERA message on Chicago News Radio WBBM. The followin...

Death in Childbirth
I taught a course last year in global maternal mortality so I have some idea of what I ' m talking about here. Childbirth is dangerous for women because, for one thing, thanks to evolution giving us big brains, the baby ' s head is too big for the birth canal. However, there are other complications of pregnancy that can occur. In Europe in the 19th Century, as it became common for women to give birth in hospitals, infectious disease killed a lot of mothers, thanks to the doctors transferring pathogens on their unwashed hands and unsterile instruments. Many a family was bereaved by maternal death, but it has become rare in ...

When Push Comes to Shove: The AMA v. Dobbs. Part 2.
BY MIKE MAGEE On November 8, 2022, five days after the 2022 Midterm elections, the AMA raised its voice in opposition to Republican efforts to promote second class citizenship for women by exerting public control over them and their doctors intensely private reproductive decisions. At the same time they sprinkled candidates on both sides of the aisle with AMA PAC money, raising questions whether their love of women includes active engagement or just passive advocacy. Trump and his now MAGAGA (“Make America Great and Glorious Again”) movement has now returned to center stage. With the...

Post-Roe, miscarriage is more dangerous
If guilt were an Olympic sport, mothers would win every medal. We worry we should have prevented our children’s problems or might have even caused them. Mothers tiptoe through a minefield of complex personal, family, and societal expectations that no one escapes unscathed. As an OB/GYN resident, I sought extra training to care for mothers Read more… Post-Roe, miscarriage is more dangerous originally appeared in KevinMD.com. (Source: Kevin, M.D. - Medical Weblog)

Bad Faith
Here ' s a lengthy discussion of the recent corporate media debacle concerning the ten year old girl who had to travel from Ohio to Indiana for an abortion. You probably know the gist of it already. The physician who performed the abortion discussed the case with reporters from the Indianapolis Star and the story made headlines around the world. Then right wing politicians and media started claiming it was false, and the Washington Post ' s " fact checker " Glenn Kessler gave them aid and comfort. (Kessler ' s " fact checks " are frequently non-factual.) The story was true, police have arrested the rapist and he has c...

On Free Speech, “Lady of Heaven,” and Sectarianism
Mustafa AkyolIn the past few weeks, some Britons had a  sense of déjà vu, reminding them the censorship campaign against Salman Rushdie’s blasphemous novel “The Satanic Verses” some thirty‐five years ago. This time, the center of angst was a movie titled, “Lady of Heaven, ” which glorified the story of Lady Fatima, the daughter of the Prophet Muhammad. Yet, in an unmistakably sectarian tone, the movie also demonized some of the most revered figures of Sunni Islam.Hence came protests organized by some Sunni groups, fromBradford to London, in front of movie theaters. There was no violence, but the heated r...

Sunday Sermonette: Thou shalt not make fun of the bald
While I certainly endorse this -- the 11th Commandment -- I do think God overreacts a wee, tiny bit in this case. Most of Chapter 2 is a tedious description of the death of Elijah and the transfer of Prophet-in-Chief to his successor Elishah. Like Jesus a few hundred years later, Elijah ascends bodily into heaven, in front of witnesses. This is a bit of an anomaly because the concept of an afterlife in heaven does not exist elsewhere. (Remember that Samuel was temporarily resurrected from underground.) Anyway, Elisha performs a couple of miracles to show he really is The Man. He then goes to Bethel where 42 children m...
