Evidence-based care for suicidality as an ethical and professional imperative: How to decrease suicidal suffering and save lives
Am Psychol. 2024 May 2. doi: 10.1037/amp0001325. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSuicide is a major public and mental health problem in the United States and around the world. According to recent survey research, there were 16,600,000 American adults and adolescents in 2022 who reported having serious thoughts of suicide (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, 2023), which underscores a profound need for effective clinical care for people who are suicidal. Yet there is evidence that clinical providers may avoid patients who are suicidal (out of fear and perceived concerns about malpractice liability) and ...

Ethological computational psychiatry: Challenges and opportunities
Curr Opin Neurobiol. 2024 Apr 30;86:102881. doi: 10.1016/j.conb.2024.102881. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTStudying the intricacies of individual subjects' moods and cognitive processing over extended periods of time presents a formidable challenge in medicine. While much of systems neuroscience appropriately focuses on the link between neural circuit functions and well-constrained behaviors over short timescales (e.g., trials, hours), many mental health conditions involve complex interactions of mood and cognition that are non-stationary across behavioral contexts and evolve over extended timescales. Here, we discuss oppo...

Caregivers' perceptions of lying to people with dementia in Denmark: a qualitative study
CONCLUSION: The findings suggest that the caregivers perceived lying to be a legitimate strategy when caring for people with dementia; surprisingly, some did not recognize their practices as constituting acts of lying at all. This finding carries significant clinical relevance, as the varying perceptions of lying underscore the potential need for a consistent approach to deception. Addressing this complexity can lead to more ethical caregiving practices, ultimately enhancing the quality of care provided to people with dementia.PMID:38695385 | DOI:10.1080/13607863.2024.2345778 (Source: Aging and Mental Health)

Unlocking the gut-heart axis: exploring the role of gut microbiota in cardiovascular health and disease
CONCLUSION: The gut microbiota is emerging as a potential therapeutic target for CVD prevention and management. However, current research has limitations, including the need for larger and more diverse studies, the challenges of establishing causality, and concerns regarding the long-term consequences and safety of gut microbiota modulation. Despite these limitations, understanding the gut-heart axis holds promise for the development of personalized therapies and interventions for cardiovascular health. Further research is needed to expand our knowledge and address the ethical and safety issues associated with gut microbio...

Evaluating aortomesenteric parameters in a tertiary center of Nepal for superior mesenteric artery syndrome diagnosis and risk factors: cross-sectional study
CONCLUSION: The study concludes that decreased BMI may pose a potential risk for SMA syndrome, as evidenced by the observed correlations with aortomesenteric parameters. Understanding these normal values in the Nepalese population is critical for accurate diagnoses and predictions using CT scans. The research highlights the impact of demographic factors on these parameters and emphasizes their significance in clinical assessments related to SMA syndrome.PMID:38694377 | PMC:PMC11060225 | DOI:10.1097/MS9.0000000000001962 (Source: Annals of Medicine)

The Perspectives of Robotic Surgeons
Surg Technol Int. 2023 Apr 29;44:sti44/1785. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTGiven recent advancements in artificial intelligence and robotic surgery, attention has now been paid to the concept of autonomous surgery. As robotic surgery has developed and matured, examples of autonomous surgery have arisen through the assistance of artificial intelligence. As with any new technology, ethical and legal considerations also arise, and there are special considerations that should be taken into account with the adaptation of new technology involving patient care. In this paper, we will describe autonomous surgery used in general su...

Write your paper on the motherland?
Account Res. 2024 May 1:1-3. doi: 10.1080/08989621.2024.2347398. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACT'Write your paper on the motherland' is an influential Chinese slogan encouraging researchers to focus on domestic issues and prioritize local applications of their work, though interpretations differ. The 2024 'International Journal Early Warning List' update sparked renewed debate over the slogan's meaning. This letter argues that misinterpreting this slogan as merely promoting domestic journal submissions could lead to a more conservative submission behavior and a more closed academic system. This reflects a common challenge a...
