Potential corporate uses of polygenic indexes: Starting a conversation about the associated ethics and policy issues
Despite the relative noisiness of polygenic indexes (PGIs), some commercial firms will use them. We offer a simple model, rooted in economic theory, to show how acquiring PGIs could be profitable and describe two scenarios where firms could use them. Finally, we discuss some associated ethics and policy issues. (Source: The American Journal of Human Genetics)

Nobel-winning neuroscientist faces scrutiny for data discrepancies in more than a dozen papers
Several research articles co-authored by Nobel Prize–winning neuroscientist Thomas Südhof are under scrutiny after online commentators raised concerns about data duplication, discrepancies in images, and other issues. Over the past year, journals have corrected five of the papers flagged on the postpublication peer-review site PubPeer and retracted another. Science has learned that journals are preparing corrections for at least three further articles. Eight more are under investigation and authors have asked journals to correct or publish updated data on another seven. Südhof, who works at Stanfo...

Single-Session Cerebellar Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation Improves Postural Stability and Reduces Ataxia Symptoms in Spinocerebellar Ataxia
In conclusion, our study suggests that a single session of ctDCS, in combination with postural training, can enhance balance and alleviate ataxia symptoms in individuals with cerebellar ataxia. This study was approved by the local research ethics committee (No. 2.877.813) and registered on clinicaltrials.org (NCT04039048 - https://www.clinicaltrials.gov/study/NCT04039048 ) on 2019-07-28.PMID:38693314 | DOI:10.1007/s12311-024-01696-9 (Source: Cerebellum)

The standardization of a new Explicit Pornographic Picture Set (EPPS)
This study aimed to fill this gap through developing a standardized affective set of diverse pornographic pictures (masturbation, oral sex, vaginal sex, anal sex, group sex, paraphilia) of same-sex and opposite-sex content, offering dimensional affective ratings of valence, arousal, and dominance, as well as co-elicited discrete emotions (disgust, moral and ethical acceptance). In total, 192 pornographic pictures acquired from online pornography platforms and 24 control IAPS images have been rated by 319 participants (Mage = 22.66, SDage = 4.66) with self-reported same- and opposite-sex sexual attraction. Stimuli were repr...

Evaluating the effect of a mobile-based symptom monitoring system for improving physical function in patients with cancer during chemotherapy: study protocol for a multicentre randomised controlled trial
This study is a multicentre, open-label, parallel-group, randomised controlled trial. We will recruit 372 patients at three tertiary hospitals located in Seoul, South Korea. Study participants will be randomly assigned to either an intervention group receiving the ePRO-CTCAE app and a control group receiving routine clinical practice only. The primary outcome is changes in physical function from commencement to completion of planned chemotherapy. A linear mixed model will be performed under the intention-to-treat principle. The secondary outcomes include physical activity level; changes in pain interference; changes in dep...
