Complete nucleotide sequence of loquat virus A, a member of the family Betaflexiviridae with a novel genome organization
AbstractAnalysis of a loquat tree with leaf curl symptoms by deep sequencing revealed a novel virus with a single-stranded RNA genome, for which the name “loquat virus A” (LoVA) was proposed. The complete genome sequence comprised 7553 nucleotides (nt) and an additional poly(A) tail at the 3′ terminus. Sequence comparisons of LoVA showed moderate similarity to cherry virus A (CVA), currant virus A (CuVA), and mume virus A (MuVA), which are memb ers of the genusCapillovirus in the familyBetaflexiviridae. Phylogenetic analysis of the full-genome nt sequence and replicase-like protein supported the placement of LoVA wit...

Comparison of structural characteristics and bioactivities of polysaccharides from loquat leaves prepared by different drying techniques.
Abstract In the present study, freeze drying, hot-air drying, vacuum drying, and microwave drying at the microwave powers of 400, 600, and 800 W, respectively, were utilized to dry loquat leaves for evaluating the effects of different drying techniques on the physicochemical structures and bioactivities of polysaccharides extracted from loquat leaves (LLPs). Results demonstrated that the physicochemical structures and bioactivities of LLPs significantly affected by different drying techniques. The degrees of esterification, molar ratios of constituent monosaccharides, contents of uronic acids, apparent v...

Loquat leaf polysaccharides improve glomerular injury in rats with anti-Thy 1 nephritis via peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha pathway.
Authors: Lu T, Fan Z, Hou J, Qi X, Guo M, Ju J, Yang Y, Gu C Abstract Chronic glomerulonephritis frequently develops into renal failure that cannot be completely cured. Based on the success of anti-inflammatory Chinese herbs in treating chronic nephritis, our goal was to investigate the therapeutic effects and mechanism of action of loquat leaf polysaccharides (LLPS) on chronic anti-Thy-1 nephritis. A rat model of glomerulonephritis was used to study the effects of 8 weeks of enalapril or LLPS treatment. Twenty-four-hour rat urinary protein excretions were measured every week for 8 weeks. Then, all animals...

Effects of gum karaya addition on the characteristics of loquat seed starch films containing oregano essential oil
Publication date: Available online 29 June 2019Source: Food HydrocolloidsAuthor(s): Thi Luyen Cao, Kyung Bin SongABSTRACTBiodegradable films were developed from a novel source of starch, extracted from loquat seed, which is usually discarded. Oregano essential oil (OE) was incorporated into the loquat seed starch (LSS) film to confer bioactivity. The LSS films incorporated with 1.2% OE exhibited good antimicrobial activities as well as desirable mechanical properties. To enhance the homogeneity of OE in the film matrix, gum karaya (GK; 10%, 15%, and 20% of OE, w/w) was added as a stabilizing agent. The effects of GK concen...

Physicochemical characteristics and biological activities of polysaccharides from the leaves of different loquat (Eriobotrya japonica) cultivars.
Abstract In order to explore polysaccharides from loquat leaves (LLPs) as functional food ingredients for prevention and treatment of obesity and type 2 diabetes, the physicochemical characteristics, in vitro binding properties, and inhibitory effects on α-amylase and α-glucosidase of polysaccharides from the leaves of different loquat cultivars, including 'Baiyu', 'Chuannong8', 'Yuanbao', and 'Dawuxing', were investigated and compared. Results showed that the contents of total uronic acids and degree of esterification in LLPs ranged from (27.04 ± 1.76)% to (41.46 ± 1.91)%, and from (20.54 ±...

Ternary complex EjbHLH1-EjMYB2-EjAP2-1 retards low temperature-induced flesh lignification in loquat fruit
Publication date: Available online 26 April 2019Source: Plant Physiology and BiochemistryAuthor(s): Meng Xu, Shao-jia Li, Xiao-fen Liu, Xue-ren Yin, Donald Grierson, Kun-song ChenAbstractsMany transcription factors (TFs), including NACs and MYBs, are involved in regulation of lignin biosynthesis during plant development and in responses to biotic and abiotic stresses. The lignin biosynthesis gene Ej4CL1 has been identified as a target for cold-induced TFs. We isolated a bHLH gene from loquat, EjbHLH1, the expression of which was negatively correlated with cold-induced fruit lignification. During low temperature storage (0...
