Transcriptome analysis of the synergistic mechanisms between two strains of potato virus Y in Solanum tuberosum L
In this study, we performed a comparative transcriptomic analysis of potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) leaves. The strains PVYN-Wi-HLJ-BDH-2 and PVYNTN-NW-INM-W-369-12 are henceforth designated as BDH and 369, respectively. In total, 806 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were detected between the Control and JZ (preinfected with BDH and challenge with 369) treatment. Gene Ontology (GO) analysis showed that the response to external biological stimulation, signal transduction, kinase, immunity, redox pathways were significantly enriched. Among these pathways, we identified numerous differentially expressed metabolites relate...

A comparative analysis of phage classification methods in light of the recent ICTV taxonomic revisions
This study compares six categorization tools and establishes a novel multi-method approach, combining genome similarity and specialized protein analysis. Applying the method to APEC phage P151 showed consistent categorization across platforms. A possible workflow for phage classification is proposed; offering a versatile tool for phage research and development.PMID:38461619 | DOI:10.1016/j.virol.2024.110016 (Source: Virology)

Saccharomyces cerevisiae cells that display norovirus P induce both systemic and mucosal neutralizing antibodies
In this study, we constructed a recombinant Saccharomyces cerevisiae (S. cerevisiae) expressing the HuNov P protein (GII. 4) and evaluated its immunogenicity in mice after oral delivery. First, the recombinant S. cerevisiae (EBY100/pYD1-P) efficiently expressed P, as evidenced by western blotting and indirect fluorescent assay. Second, after oral administration, EBY100/pYD1-P, especially the high-dose group (5 × 109 clone formation units), elicited systemic and mucosal immune responses characterized by significant sera IgG, IgA, and mucosal sIgA. More importantly, these antibodies showed a substantial neutralization effec...

Oncolytic viral therapy for gliomas: Advances in the mechanisms and approaches to delivery
Virology. 2024 Feb 20;593:110033. doi: 10.1016/j.virol.2024.110033. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTGlioma is a diverse category of tumors originating from glial cells encompasses various subtypes, based on the specific type of glial cells involved. The most aggressive is glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), which stands as the predominant primary malignant tumor within the central nervous system in adults. Despite the application of treatment strategy, the median survival rate for GBM patients still hovers around 15 months. Oncolytic viruses (OVs) are artificially engineered viruses designed to selectively target and induce apopt...

Preliminary report on therapeutic potential of coal-derived carbon quantum dots against SARS-CoV-2 virus
Virology. 2024 Feb 27;593:110036. doi: 10.1016/j.virol.2024.110036. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDue to the pandemic of COVID-19 and subsequent emerging of new mutant strains, there has been a worldwide hunt for therapeutic and protective agents for its inhibition. In this short communication, for the first time, we report the coal-derived carbon quantum dot (CQD) for the possible therapeutic application against SARS-CoV-2. The synthesized C1-CQD is observed to be safe towards the normal cell line at highest dose, while effectively inhibiting growth of SARS-CoV2 (>95%) with IC50 value of 5.469 μg/mL. Moreover, C1-CQD ...

Investigation and characterization of rice dwarfing epidemic caused by southern rice black-streaked dwarf virus in Jiangsu in 2023
Virology. 2024 Feb 18;593:110027. doi: 10.1016/j.virol.2024.110027. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDuring the field surveys in Jiangsu Province, China, contiguous patches of rice plants with varying degrees of dwarfing, wax-white or dark brown enations at the base of stems, and abnormal heading symptoms were observed in the fields located in Jiangning District in Nanjing City, Jurong County in Zhenjiang City, and Zhangjiagang County in Suzhou City. Through molecular analyses, the presence of southern rice black-streaked dwarf virus was confirmed in symptomatic rice plants. The infections of other rice viruses that cause dwa...
