N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide is an independent predictor of mortality in patients with sepsis
This study aims to evaluate the role of cardiac enzymes N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) and cardiac troponin-I (CTnI) as predictors of outcomes in patients with sepsis. 78 cases with a diagnosis of sepsis were enrolled over a 2-year period. Baseline demographic, Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation-II (APACHE-II), Simplified Acute Physiology Score-II (SAPS-II), hematologic and biochemical parameters were noted. Serum NT-proBNP and CTnI were evaluated at 24 and 72 hours of admission along with echocardiography. Patients were prospectively followed up until death or discharge. Mean APACHE-II sc...

Neuroimaging risk factors for participation restriction after acute ischemic stroke: 1-year follow-up study
The aim of the present study was to determine the neuroimaging predictors of poor participation after acute ischemic stroke. A total of 443 patients who had acute ischemic stroke were assessed. At 1-year recovery, the Reintegration to Normal Living Index was used to assess participation restriction. We also assessed the Activities of Daily Living Scale and modified Rankin Scale (mRS) score. Brain MRI measurement included acute infarcts and pre-existing abnormalities such as enlarged perivascular spaces, white matter lesions, ventricular-brain ratio, and medial temporal lobe atrophy (MTLA). The study included 324 men (73.1%...

Artificial intelligence to diagnose ear disease using otoscopic image analysis: a review
AI relates broadly to the science of developing computer systems to imitate human intelligence, thus allowing for the automation of tasks that would otherwise necessitate human cognition. Such technology has increasingly demonstrated capacity to outperform humans for functions relating to image recognition. Given the current lack of cost-effective confirmatory testing, accurate diagnosis and subsequent management depend on visual detection of characteristic findings during otoscope examination. The aim of this manuscript is to perform a comprehensive literature review and evaluate the potential application of artificial in...

LECT-2 amyloidosis: what do we know?
Amyloidosis is a rare group of diseases characterized by abnormal folding of proteins and extracellular deposition of insoluble fibrils. It can be localized to one organ system or can have systemic involvement. The kidney is the most common organ to be involved in systemic amyloidosis often leading to renal failure and the nephrotic syndrome. The two most common types of renal amyloidosis are immunoglobulin light chain-derived amyloidosis (AL) and reactive amyloidosis (AA). A novel form of amyloidosis (ALECT2) derived from leukocyte chemotactic factor 2 (LECT-2) and primarily involving the kidneys was first described by Be...

In-vivo skeletal muscle mitochondrial function in Klinefelter syndrome
In this study, in-vivo postexercise skeletal muscle mitochondrial function does not appear to be impaired in adolescents with XXY compared with controls and is not significantly different by testosterone treatment status in XXY. (Source: Journal of Investigative Medicine)

Impact on the fitness of N95 masks with extended use/limited reuse and dry heat decontamination
Substandard use of N95 masks, sometimes combined with dry heat decontamination, lacks safety data. We evaluated the impact of these practices on the fitness of N95 masks. This is a non-human subject research conducted from July to October 2020. 155 masks were used by 12 healthcare workers during 10-hour shifts. Masks were collected at the end of the shift and if the number of donnings/doffings was less than five (‘modified extended use’, ME) or whenever this number reached five (‘limited reuse’, LR), per the recommendation of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Masks that passed an Occup...

Protective effects of sunscreen (50+) and octatrienoic acid 0.1% in actinic keratosis and UV damages
Actinic keratosis is a form of dysplastic epidermal lesion resulting from chronic and excessive UV exposure with a certain risk of becoming cancerous. Current guidelines advocated the use of sunscreens to prevent photodamage. An efficient photoprotection must involve both primary protective factors such as UV filters and secondary factors (eg, antioxidants) able to disrupt the photochemical and genetic cascade triggered by UVs. An in vitro model of human skin (Phenion FT) was used to assess the photoprotective potential of a sunscreen containing inorganic sun-filters (50+ SPF) and 0.1% octatrienoic acid (KERA’+) afte...

Education can improve clinician confidence in information sharing and willingness to refer to stem cell clinical trials for cerebral palsy
This study highlights that by offering resources and education, clinician confidence and willingness to refer to cell therapy trials can improve; this may help drive the stem cell research landscape and support patient decision-making. (Source: Journal of Investigative Medicine)

Associations between GDF15 levels and pre-diabetes in non-obese subjects
Growth differentiation factor 15 (GDF15) is a stress-response cytokine which belongs to the transforming growth factor β superfamily. Although GDF15 was initially found to have a role in metabolic diseases, the association between GDF15 and dysglycemic status remains inconclusive. Thus, the aim of this study was to examine the relationships between GDF15 and different glycemic statuses in non-obese subjects. We enrolled 502 non-obese subjects, among individuals who had normal glucose tolerance (NGT; n=125), isolated impaired fasting glucose (IFG; n=116), isolated impaired glucose tolerance (IGT; n=106), IFG plus IGT (...

Prevalence and predictors of colonoscopic findings in patients with autoimmune gastritis
The clinical spectrum of autoimmune gastritis is silent in the early stages of the disease and no specific symptom is related to this entity. Although gastroscopic findings of this entity are well defined, data regarding colonoscopic findings are limited. The aims of this study were to determine the prevalence of colonoscopic findings and to explore factors that might affect these findings. This is a retrospective chart review of patients with autoimmune gastritis (n=240). Data regarding colonoscopic findings, serum gastrin and chromogranin A (CgA) levels and gastric histopathological results were extracted and compared wi...
