Effect of bisphosphonate on hip fracture in patients with osteoporosis or osteopenia according to age: a meta-analysis and systematic review
This meta-analysis and systematic review investigated the efficacy of bisphosphonates on the incidence of hip fracture (IHF) in patients of different ages with osteoporosis or osteopenia. We searched Web of Science, Embase, the Cochrane Database, and PubMed from inception to January 10, 2021, for trials reporting the effects of bisphosphonates on the IHF. We included only randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trials. We pooled data using a random-effects meta-analysis with risk ratios (RRs) and reported 95% CIs. We also used the Cochran Q and I² statistics to assess the heterogeneity in the results of ...

Acceptability of HIV testing for adolescents and young adults by delivery model: a systematic review
HIV infections are prevalent among adolescents and young adults, of whom 44% remain unaware of their diagnosis. HIV screening presents numerous challenges including stigma, fear, and concerns about confidentiality, which may influence young people’s acceptance of HIV screening and linkage to care differently from individuals in other age groups. It is imperative to understand which care delivery models are most effective in facilitating these services for youth. This systematic review analyzes the rates of HIV test acceptance and linkage to care by care delivery model for adolescents and young adults. Studies were cl...

Critical illness in patients with metastatic cancer: a population-based cohort study of epidemiology and outcomes
The appropriateness of intensive care unit (ICU) admission of patients with metastatic cancer remains debated. We aimed to examine the short-term outcomes and their temporal pattern in critically ill patients with metastatic disease. We used state-wide data to identify hospitalizations aged ≥18 years with metastatic cancer admitted to ICU in Texas during 2010–2014. Multivariable logistic regression modeling was used to examine the factors associated with short-term mortality and its temporal trends among all ICU admissions and those undergoing mechanical ventilation. Among 136,644 ICU admissions with metastatic ca...

Cohens d and physicians opinion on effect size: a questionnaire on anemia treatment
A well-known effect size (ES) indicator is Cohen’s d. Cohen defined d measures of small, medium, and large ES as 0.2, 0.5, and 0.8, respectively. This approach has been criticized because practical and clinical importance depends on the context of research. The aim of the study was to examine physicians’ perception of ES using iron deficiency anemia treatment as an example and observing the effects of pretreatment level and duration of treatment on the magnitude of ES. We prepared a questionnaire describing four different clinical studies: (1) 1 month of treatment of anemia in a group of patients with a mean he...

Magnesium intake is associated with the metabolically healthy obese phenotype
Although magnesium intake is inversely associated with the risk of metabolic abnormalities, whether magnesium intake plays a role on metabolically healthy obese (MHO) phenotype has not been explored. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine whether the magnesium intake is associated with the MHO phenotype. Apparently, healthy women and men aged 20–65 years with obesity were enrolled in a cross-sectional study. Subjects were allocated into MHO (n=124) and metabolically unhealthy obese (MUO) (n=123) groups. MHO phenotype was defined by abdominal obesity (waist circumference ≥90 cm in men and ≥80 cm i...

Sequential administration of pemetrexed and cisplatin reprograms tumor immune microenvironment and potentiates PD-1/PD-L1 treatment in a lung cancer model
This article aimed to investigate the effects of the administration method of pemetrexed and cisplatin on the efficacy and safety of treating non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and the intrinsic molecular mechanism. Subcutaneous injection of A549 cells into BALB/C nude mice was used to explore the efficacy of different administration methods of pemetrexed and cisplatin in vivo. Immunogenic cell death (ICD) was evaluated by ATP secretion, ecto-CALR expression, and high mobility group protein 1 release. Western blot, qRT-PCR, and immunohistochemical staining were applied to detect the expression of apoptosis, cell cycle, and...

Relationship between circulating serum omentin-1 levels and nascent metabolic syndrome in patients with hypertension
In this study, 110 patients (54 men, 49%; average age: 49.72±11.32 years) treated for hypertension but without overt diabetes and/or CVD were enrolled. 66 patients were stratified into MetS (+) (group 1) and 44 patients into MetS (–) (group 2) according to the American Heart Association/National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute criteria. The triglyceride glucose (TyG) index was used to assess insulin resistance. Circulating omentin-1 levels in venous blood samples were measured by an ELISA kit. Circulating omentin-1 levels in patients with MetS were significantly lower than in patients without MetS (46.35 ng/m...
