Over-expression of Medicago Acyl-CoA-binding 2 genes enhance salt and drought tolerance in Arabidopsis
In this study, a total of eight ACBP genes were identified in the genome of Medicago truncatula and Medicago sativa, and they were clustered into four sub-families (Class I-IV). Many cis-acting elements related to abiotic response were identified in the promoter region of these ACBP genes, in particular light-responsive elements. These ACBP genes exhibited distinct expression pattern in various tissues, and the expression level of MtACBP1/MsACBP1 and MtACBP2/MsACBP2 gene pairs were significantly increased under NaCl treatment. Subcellular localization analysis showed that MtACBP1/MsACBP1 and MtACBP2/MsACBP2 were localized ...

Influence of chitosan protonation degree in nanofibrillated cellulose/chitosan composite films and their morphological, mechanical, and surface properties
Int J Biol Macromol. 2024 Apr 15:131587. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2024.131587. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTComposite films of nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC) and chitosan (CS) were prepared by spray deposition method, and the influence of polymers ratio and protonation degree (α) of chitosan was evaluated. Films were characterized using morphological, mechanical, and surface techniques. Higher NFC content increased Young's modulus of film composites and reduced air permeability, while higher CS content increased water contact angle. Variations in the degree of protonation of chitosan from non-protonated (α = 0) to fully...

Int J Biol Macromol. 2024 Apr 15:131626. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2024.131626. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSelf-healing hydrogel is a promising soft material for applications in wound dressings, drug delivery, tissue engineering, biomimetic electronic skin, and wearable electronic devices. However, it is a challenge to fabricate the self-healing hydrogels without external stimuli. Inspired by mussel, the metal-catechol complexes were introduced into the hydrogel systems to prepare the mussel-inspired hydrogels by regulating the gelation kinetics of Fe3+ crosslinkers with gallic acid (GA) in this research. The amine-functi...

Rheological, thermal, and in vitro starch digestibility properties of oat starch-lipid complexes
Int J Biol Macromol. 2024 Apr 15:131550. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2024.131550. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe influence of oat lipids on the structural, thermal, rheological, and in vitro digestibility properties of oat starch under heat processing conditions was investigated. X-ray diffraction, fourier infrared spectroscopy, and differential scanning calorimetry revealed the formation of a V-shaped crystal structure between starch and lipid, resulting in enhanced orderliness and enthalpy. Oat lipids decreased the final viscosity and gel strength of oat starch while weakening the trend towards gel network formation. Addi...

Recoverable and degradable carboxymethyl chitosan polyelectrolyte hydrogel film for ultra stable encapsulation of curcumin
Int J Biol Macromol. 2024 Apr 15:131616. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2024.131616. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTHydrogels have shown great potential for application in food science due to their diverse functionalities. However, most hydrogels inevitably contain toxic chemical cross-linking agent residues, posing serious food safety concerns. In this paper, a curcumin/sodium alginate/carboxymethyl chitosan hydrogels (CSCH) were prepared by self-assembly of two oppositely charged polysaccharides, carboxymethyl chitosan and sodium alginate, to form a three-dimensional network encapsulating curcumin for extending food shelf life. ...

A composite gel formed by konjac glucomannan together with Nano-CF obtained by FeCl3-citric acid hydrolysis as a potential fat substitute
This study aims to fabricate composite gels using nano citrus fiber (Nano-CF) derived from the hydrolysis process of citric acid (CA) with FeCl3, with a simultaneous exploration of its potential as an substitute to fats. Investigation of varying FeCl3 concentrations (0.01 to 0.03 mmol/g of CA) revealed a significant enhancement in the water-holding and oil-retention capacity of the Nano-CF. The meticulous synthesis of the composite gels involved integrating nano citrus fibers with konjac glucomannan (KGM) through high-speed shearing, followed by a comprehensive evaluation of its microstructure and physicochemical attribute...

Thymosin beta 10 loaded ZIF-8/sericin hydrogel promoting angiogenesis and osteogenesis for bone regeneration
Int J Biol Macromol. 2024 Apr 14:131562. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2024.131562. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAngiogenesis is pivotal for osteogenesis during bone regeneration. A hydrogel that promotes both angiogenesis and osteogenesis is essential in bone tissue engineering. However, creating scaffolds with the ideal balance of biodegradability, osteogenic, and angiogenic properties poses a challenge. Thymosin beta 10 (TMSB10), known for its dual role in angiogenesis and osteogenesis differentiation, faces limitations due to protein activity preservation. To tackle this issue, ZIF-8 was engineered as a carrier for TMSB10 (...

Role of acemannan and pectic polysaccharides in saline-water stress tolerance of Aloe vera (Aloe barbadensis Miller) plant
This study investigates the impact of water and salinity stress on Aloe vera, focusing on the role of Aloe vera polysaccharides in mitigating these stresses. Pectins and acemannan were the most affected polymers. Low soil moisture and high salinity (NaCl 80 mM) increased pectic substances, altering rhamnogalacturonan type I in Aloe vera gel. Aloe vera pectins maintained a consistent 60 % methyl-esterification regardless of conditions. Interestingly, acemannan content rose with salinity, particularly under low moisture, accompanied by 90 to 150 % acetylation increase. These changes improved the functionality of Aloe vera po...

Effect of branched 1,4-butanediol citrate oligomers with different molecular weights on toughness and aging resistance of glycerol plasticized starch
In this study, branched 1,4-butanediol citrate oligomers with different molecular weights (P1, P2, and P3) are synthesized, and then mixed with glycerol (G) as the co-plasticizers to prepare thermoplastic starch (CS/PG). The results show that the molecular weight and branching degree of the branched 1,4-butanediol citrate oligomers increase as reaction time prolongs. Compared with glycerol plasticized starch, the thermoplastic starch films with branched 1,4-butanediol citrate oligomers/glycerol (10 wt%/20 wt%) have a better toughness, transmittance, and aging resistance, and have a lower crystallinity, hygroscopicity, and ...
