Int J Biol Macromol. 2024 Apr 8:131188. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2024.131188. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTTraditional spiking methods for preparing matrix reference material of aquatic products is difficult to control the drug content in the matrix, especially one matrix containing multiple drugs. Minced fish is commonly used for the preparation of matrix reference materials in aquatic products, which is a relatively complex matrix with stickiness and difficult handling. Drug loading capacity is a key factor affecting the effectiveness of matrix reference materials. Here, we proposed a new spiking approach to improve the ...

Int J Biol Macromol. 2024 Apr 8:131491. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2024.131491. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTQuetiapine hemifumarate (QF) delivery to the CNS via conventional formulations is challenging due to poor solubility and lower oral bioavailability (9 %). Similarly, many other second-generation antipsychotics, such as olanzapine, clozapine, and paliperidone, have also shown low oral bioavailability of <50 %. Hence, the present work was intended to formulate QF-loaded biodegradable PLGA-NPs with appropriate surface charge modification through poloxamer-chitosan and investigate its targeting potential on RPMI-2650 c...

Improved antioxidant activity of pretreated lignin nanoparticles: Evaluation and self-assembly
This study investigated the effect of various pretreatment methods on the lignin structure and subsequent antioxidant activity of LNPs. Among four pretreated LNPs, hydrothermal LNPs exhibited the highest antioxidant activity, surpassing unpretreated, acid-pretreated and kraft LNPs, with an impressive efficacy of 91.6 %. The relationship between LNPs' structure and antioxidant activity was revealed by 2D heteronuclear singular quantum correlation (1H13C HSQC) and 31P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). 1H13C HSQC suggested the cleavage of β-O-4 ether bonds, as well as a decrease in ferulic acid and p-coumaric acid, which dir...

Characterization of carboxylated cellulose nanofibrils and oligosaccharides from Kraft pulp fibers and their potential elicitor effect on the gene expression of Capsicum annuum
In this study, cellulose nanofibrils (CNF) gels were obtained by TEMPO-mediated oxidation of unbleached and bleached kraft pulps. The molecular structures were characterized with ESI and MALDI MS. Analysis of the fine sequences was achieved by MS and MS/MS of the water-soluble oligosaccharides obtained by acid hydrolysis of the CNF gels. The analysis revealed the presence of two families: one corresponding to homoglucuronic acid sequences and the other composed by alternating glucose and glucuronic acid units. The CNF gels, alone or with the addition of the water-soluble oligosaccharides, were tested on Chili pepper (Capsi...

Characterization of O/W emulgels based on whey protein-alginate-inulin coacervates: Influence of temperature and ultrasound as protein preconditioning process
Int J Biol Macromol. 2024 Mar 30:131260. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2024.131260. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPreconditioning processes in proteins play a crucial role in enhancing their functional properties as surface active agents. Whey protein isolate (WPI, 20 wt%) was preconditioned via temperature (WPIT, 90 °C) or ultrasound (WPIUS, 20 kHz, 80 % amplitude). FTIR and zeta potential analysis demonstrated the effect of the preconditioning process on the secondary structure and surface properties of WPI. WPI-Alginate:Inulin (AI) complex coacervates (CCWPI:AI) were formed at pH 3.0 using WPIT and WPIUS, and the associative...

Higher specific capacitance and compressibility nanocellulose based supercapacitor hydrogel electrode assembled by efficient impregnation
Int J Biol Macromol. 2024 Apr 8:131463. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2024.131463. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe rational and effective combination of different electrochemical substances to prepare high-performance supercapacitor electrodes has been widely studied by researchers. Currently, most work focuses on polymerizing conductive polymers onto the surface of nanocellulose and carbon materials, and then preparing them into supercapacitor electrodes. This method is effective, but the process is cumbersome. Therefore, we propose a simpler and more effective method. A hydrogel was prepared by using TEMPO oxidized cellulose...

Efficient isomerization of glucose into fructose by MgO-doped lignin-derived ordered mesoporous carbon
This study introduces an innovative synthesis method for creating an MgO-based ordered mesoporous carbon (MgO@OMC) catalyst, aimed at the efficient isomerization of glucose into fructose. Throughout the synthesis process, lignin serves as the exclusive carbon precursor, while Mg2+ functions as both a crosslinking agent and a metallic active center. This enables a one-step synthesis of MgO@OMC via a solvent-induced evaporation self-assembly (EISA) method. The synthesized MgO@OMCs exhibit an impeccable 2D hexagonal ordered mesoporous structure, in addition to a substantial specific surface area (378.2 m2/g) and small MgO nan...

Modification of wood lignin and integration with multifunctional polyester nanocomposite
Int J Biol Macromol. 2024 Apr 8:131466. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2024.131466. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTA simple strategy was introduced to develop fluorescent wood with the ability to alter its color when exposed to both visible and ultraviolet lights. Injecting a combination of europium and dysprosium doped aluminate (EDA; 7-12 nm) nanoparticles and polyester resin (PET) into a lignin-modified wood (LMW) produced a translucent smart wooden window with fluorescence and afterglow emission properties. In order to prevent formation of aggregates and improve the preparation process of transparent wood, EDA must be properly...

Alginate-based adsorbents with adjustable slit-shaped pore structure for selective removal of copper ions
In this study, GO, MMT and SA were used as raw materials to compare the adsorption behaviors of three alginate-based adsorbents crosslinked with different valence metal ions (Ca2+, Fe3+ and Zr4+) on Cu(II). The aerogels were based on sodium alginate as the matrix material with unique slit-shaped pore structures formed by stacking effect of sheets and chemical bonding. It was found that the pore structures of the aerogels were denser and more orderly with the increase of the valence states of the crosslinked ions, and the affinity for Cu(II) in planar configuration was stronger. The Zr4+-GMSA aerogel had the maximum adsorpt...

In vitro digestion properties of Laiyang pear residue polysaccharides and it counteracts DSS-induced gut injury in mice via modulating gut inflammation, gut microbiota and intestinal barrier
Int J Biol Macromol. 2024 Apr 8:131482. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2024.131482. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe aim of this study was to explore the dynamic changes in the physicochemical properties of Laiyang pear residue polysaccharide (LPP) during in vitro digestion, as well as its protective effect on the intestines. Monosaccharide composition and molecular weight analysis showed that there was no significant change in LPP during the oral digestion stage. However, during the gastric and intestinal digestion stages, the glycosidic bonds of LPP were broken, leading to the dissociation of large molecular aggregates and a s...
