Rapid and sensitive detection of SARS-CoV-2 IgM through luciferase luminescence on an automatic platform
Int J Biol Macromol. 2024 Mar 16:130964. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2024.130964. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSARS-CoV-2 has brought a global health crisis worldwide. IgM is an early marker in sera after the infections, and the detection of IgM is crucial to assist diagnosis and evaluate the vaccination clinically. Herein, we developed an automated platform to identify IgM against SARS-CoV-2 in sera. Streptavidin-magnetic beads were utilized to bind to a biotinylated anti-IgM antibody, which was employed to capture IgM in sera. RBD fused luciferase hGluc was employed to label the trapped IgM against RBD and the signal of lum...

Antimicrobial activity of geranium (Pelargonium graveolens) essential oil and its encapsulation in carioca bean starch ultrafine fibers by electrospinning
In this study, geranium essential oil (GEO) was extracted and encapsulated in ultrafine bean starch fibers produced by electrospinning as an antibacterial agent. GEO revealed a composition rich in volatile compounds, including citronellol, cis-geraniol, β-linalool, citronellyl formate, and linalool formate. In its free form, GEO exhibited high antibacterial activity against pathogenic bacteria strains (L. monocytogenes, S. aureus, and E. coli). The bean starch fibers, produced with and without the addition of GEO, were uniform and continuous, with an average diameter ranging from 249 to 373 nm. Confocal analysis indicated...

Platelet rich fibrin and simvastatin-loaded pectin-based 3D printed-electrospun bilayer scaffold for skin tissue regeneration
In this study, a bilayer scaffold (BS) with a top layer (TL) comprising 3D printed pectin/polyacrylic acid/platelet rich fibrin hydrogel (Pec/PAA/PRF) and a bottom nanofibrous layer (NL) containing Pec/PAA/simvastatin (SIM) was produced. The biodegradable and biocompatible polymers Pec and PAA were cross-linked to form hydrogels via Ca2+ activation through galacturonate linkage and chelation, respectively. PRF as an autologous growth factor (GF) source and SIM together augmented angiogenesis and neovascularization. Because of 3D printing, the BS possessed a uniform distribution of PRF in TL and an average fiber diameter of...

Biosafety consideration of nanocellulose in biomedical applications: A review
Int J Biol Macromol. 2024 Mar 16:130900. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2024.130900. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTNanocellulose-based biomaterials have gained significant attention in various fields, especially in medical and pharmaceutical areas, due to their unique properties, including non-toxicity, high specific surface area, biodegradability, biocompatibility, and abundant feasible and sophisticated strategies for functional modification. The biosafety of nanocellulose itself is a prerequisite to ensure the safe and effective application of biomaterials as they interact with living cells, tissues, and organs at the nanoscal...

Ameliorative effect of an acidic polysaccharide from Phellinus linteus on ulcerative colitis in a DSS-induced mouse model
Int J Biol Macromol. 2024 Mar 16:130959. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2024.130959. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPhellinus linteus, a rare medicinal fungus, displays strong antitumor and anti-inflammatory activities because of its active metabolites, particularly polysaccharides. We investigated effects of P. linteus acidic polysaccharide (PLAP) on amelioration of dextran sodium sulfate (DSS)-induced ulcerative colitis (UC) in a mouse model, and associated mechanisms. PLAP treatment alleviated major UC symptoms (weight loss, reduced food intake, increased disease activity index), and ameliorated histopathological colon tissue d...
