Patient-Centered Care Could Improve Quality of Life and Survival of Dialysis Patients: Dialysis Prescription and Daily Practice
We now face a paradigm shift in clinical practice and research of dialysis from evidence-based medicine outcomes to patient-reported outcomes (PROs). It is imperative to establish a daily practice pattern based on the PROs, namely “patient-centered dialysis care.” In 2005, we introduced the concept of “patient-oriented dialysis,” which includes two fundamental components; adjustment of the dialysis prescription according to the PROs and nutritional intervention based on the global nutritional assessment. Routine exami nations and team meetings were held to monitor the status of PROs and nutrition, and intervention ...

New Frontiers in Sepsis-Induced Acute Kidney Injury and Blood Purification Therapies: The Role of Polymethylmethacrylate Membrane Hemofilter
Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a common consequence of sepsis with a mortality rate of up to 40%. The pathogenesis of septic AKI is complex and involves several mechanisms leading to exacerbated inflammatory response associated with renal injury. A large body of evidence suggests that inflammation is tightly linked to AKI through bidirectional interaction between renal and immune cells. Preclinical data from our and other laboratories have identified in complement system activation a crucial mediator of AKI. Partial recovery following AKI could lead to long-term consequences that predispose to chronic dysfunction and may als...

The Investigation of Kidney Involvement in 430 Hospitalized Patients with Omicron COVID-19 in Tianjin, China
Conclusion: The majority of the patients suffered from mild or ordinary symptoms of Omicron COVID-19 infection. The primary kidney involvement was hematuria and proteinuria. Proteinuria was significantly associated with Omicron variant infection, and patients with hypertensive comorbidity, higher CRP, and higher creatinine levels were at increased risk of proteinuria after Omicron variant infection.Blood Purif (Source: Blood Purification)

Rationale for a New Classification of Solutes of Interest in Chronic Kidney Disease and Hemodialysis
A hallmark of chronic kidney disease is the retention of solutes that normally are eliminated by the kidneys. The current classification defines uremic toxins based on molecular weight and protein affinity. The retention of solutes is already detected in the early stages of the disease when patients are pauci-symptomatic or asymptomatic but the role of therapies to retard the loss of kidney function in patients with chronic kidney disease (e.g., modulators of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system, sodium-glucose cotransporter inhibitors) in reducing uremic toxins is poorly understood. Most of the research evaluating the...
