Hepatitis B Vaccination Response in Hemodialysis Patients: The Impact of Dialysis Shift
Conclusion: While better sleep following vaccination is associated with seroconversion in the general population, this is not the case in hemodialysis patients after multivariate adjustment. In the context of end-stage kidney disease, early dialysis start is not a significant predictor of HB vaccination response. The association between objectively measured postvaccination sleep duration and seroconversion rate should be investigated.Blood Purif (Source: Blood Purification)

Efficiency of Double Plasma Molecular Absorption System on the Acute Severe Cholestatic Hepatitis
Conclusions: DPMAS could significantly eliminate the necessity of liver transplantation. The artificial liver support system should be conducted to bring down the bilirubin level and the ratio of cases with severe conditions. In general, DPMAS should be preferred as an artificial liver support therapy for the patients with acute severe CH.Blood Purif (Source: Blood Purification)

Predialytic versus Intradialytic Nutrition: A Study to Assess Effects on Intradialytic Blood Pressure, Dialysis Adequacy, and Urea Removal
Conclusions: Predialytic supplementation was associated with better dialysis adequacy and urea removal than intradialytic supplementation. However, both timings were equally tolerated and not associated with underdialysis.Blood Purif (Source: Blood Purification)

Neutrophil to Lymphocyte Ratio as a Predictor of Long-Term Outcome in Peritoneal Dialysis Patients: A 5-Year Cohort Study
Conclusions: NLR could be a strong predictor of long-term outcome in PD patients.Blood Purif (Source: Blood Purification)

Home Dialysis: A Majority Chooses It, a Minority Gets It
Conclusions: A large discrepancy between informed patients ’ choices and the reality of the current dialysis landscape. Absence of a care partner, lack of home space, and patients not deemed appropriate surgical candidates were the main driving forces in their not opting for a home modality.Blood Purif (Source: Blood Purification)

“To Be, or Not to Be” a Nephrologist: Students’ Dilemma and a Strategy for the Field
The attractiveness of a career in nephrology has diminished over the past decades, leading to global concerns about the future of the specialty ’s workforce. The reasons physicians choose (and do not choose) a career in the field must be identified in order to boost recruitment of new nephrologists. In this article, a multilevel strategy is proposed to deal with the declining interest in the specialty: (1) increasing contact and providing early exposure to nephrology; (2) promoting mentoring and role models in medical schools; (3) improving the experience of trainees and medical students; (4) incorporating procedural ski...

Pumpless Extracorporeal Hemadsorption Technique: A New Method for Early Cytokine Elimination?
In recent years, extracorporeal hemadsorption (HA) techniques capable of adsorbing pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines are increasingly used in various clinical situations. The therapeutic benefit of cytokine elimination likely depends on timing. Although treatment seems to be most effective when started within the first 24 h, therapy is often delayed as it must be combined with another extracorporeal circuit. Thus, using a pumpless extracorporeal HA technique might be a valuable option in order to expedite the commencement of cytokine elimination in critically ill patients.Blood Purif (Source: Blood Purification)

QT Prolongation in Dialysis Patients: An Epidemiological Study with a Focus on Malnutrition
Conclusion: These results suggest that QT prolongation is a common complication and is more frequent in women and diabetic patients. The decreases in serum albumin and Cr levels, GNRI, BMI, %TBW, %ICW, FFM, and MM together coincided with malnutrition and thus suggest a close relationship of QT prolongation with malnutrition. Management of QT prolongation may be achieved better in the future by understanding these biochemical and biophysical changes, particularly those regarding malnutrition.Blood Purif (Source: Blood Purification)

Safety and Efficacy of Tandem Hemodialysis and Selective Plasma Exchange in Pretransplant Desensitization of ABO-Incompatible Kidney Transplantation
Conclusion: In HD/SePE tandem therapy, internal pressures were higher and TMP and AP tended to increase more compared to SePE monotherapy, but we were able to perform the 2 treatments without any functional problems. Tandem therapy was also effective in decreasing isoagglutinin titers, which suggests that this may be a beneficial treatment modality as apheresis before ABOi kidney transplantation.Blood Purif (Source: Blood Purification)

Acute Kidney Injury, Fluid Overload, and Renal Replacement Therapy Differ by Underlying Diagnosis in Neonatal Extracorporeal Support and Impact Mortality Disparately
Conclusions: Physiologically distinct ECMO diagnoses warrant individualized treatment strategies given variable incidence and effects of AKI, FO, and RRT by category on mortality.Blood Purif (Source: Blood Purification)

Low-Intensity Intradialytic Exercise Attenuates the Relative Blood Volume Drop Due to Intravascular Volume Loss during Hemodiafiltration
Discussion: Mild exercise during HDF decreased the RBV drop and was associated with less hypotension events. The lack of differences in the hemodynamic variables suggests an adequate acute response of cardiovascular compensation variables to intradialytic hypovolemia.Blood Purif (Source: Blood Purification)

COVID-19, Social Media, and the Role of the Public Physician
The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in an avalanche of information, much of it false or misleading. Social media posts with misleading or dangerous opinions and analyses are often amplified by celebrities and social media influencers; these posts have contributed substantially to this avalanche of information. An emerging force in this information infodemic is public physicians, doctors who view a public presence as a large segment of their mission. These physicians bring authority and real-world experience to the COVID-19 discussion. To investigate the role of public physicians, we interviewed a convenience cohort of physi...

Storytelling to Inspire Dialysis Patients to Learn about Living Donor Kidney Transplant
Background: Policy changes including the Advancing American Kidney Health initiative and CMS ’s ESRD Quality Incentive Program recommend increasing educational initiatives within dialysis centers to increase living kidney donor transplant (LDKT) rates. LDKT education can be challenging in dialysis centers due to limited provider time to educate, patient fears or reluctance to learn about LDKT, and difficulty educating potential living donors. New educational innovations that increase dialysis patient curiosity about pursuing LDKT are needed.Summary: Digital first-person storytelling, or the sharing of narratives by indiv...
