The human gut microbiota and glucose metabolism: a scoping review of key bacteria and the potential role of SCFAs
We present the current evidence for identified key bacteria and their potential roles in glucose metabolism independent of overweight, obesity, and metabolic drugs. We provide support for SCFAs mediating such effects and discuss the role of diet, as well as metabolites derived from diet and gut microbiota interactions. From 5983 initially identified PubMed records, 45 original studies were eligible and reviewed. α Diversity and 45 bacterial taxa were associated with selected outcomes. Six taxa were most frequently associated with glucose metabolism:Akkermansia muciniphila, Bifidobacterium longum, Clostridium leptum group,...

Dietary potassium intake, kidney function, and survival in a nationally representative cohort
ConclusionsLower dietary potassium scaled to energy intake was associated with higher mortality, irrespective of kidney function. There was also a synergistic relation of higher potassium intake, plant-based sources, and macronutrient/mineral consumption with survival. Further studies are needed to elucidate pathways linking potassium intake and coexisting dietary factors with survival in populations with and without chronic kidney disease. Lactose-reduced infant formula with corn syrup solids and obesity risk among participants in the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC)
ConclusionsCSSF issuance is associated with increased obesity risk in the first 5 y life in a dose dependent manner, independently of maternal weight status, breastfeeding duration, and total formula issuance. (Source: American Journal of Clinical Nutrition)

Intake of mother's milk by very-low-birth-weight infants and variation in DNA methylation of genes involved in neurodevelopment at 5.5 years of age
ConclusionsIn-hospital percentage mother's milk intake by VLBW infants was associated with variations in DNAm of neurodevelopmental genes at 5.5 y; some of these DNAm variations are associated with brain structure and IQ.This trial was registered atisrctn.com as ISRCTN35317141 and atclinicaltrials.gov as NCT02759809. Maternal diet during pregnancy and child neurodevelopment up to age 3.5 years: the nationwide Étude Longitudinale Française depuis l'Enfance (ELFE) birth cohort
ConclusionsHigher diet quality during pregnancy was associated with higher parent-reported neurodevelopmental scores in early childhood. The negative association of pork-meat products consumption with early neurodevelopmental scores needs to be further confirmed. (Source: American Journal of Clinical Nutrition)
