Changes in adiposity among children and adolescents in the United States, 1999 –2006 to 2011–2018
ConclusionsAmong US children and adolescents, DXA-derived measures of adiposity increased from 1999 –2006 to 2011–2018, albeit not consistently in every age, race and Hispanic origin, and BMI subgroup. These data reinforce the need to consider other measures, besides BMI categories, when studying adiposity in children and adolescents. (Source: American Journal of Clinical Nutrition)

Leisure-time and study-time Internet use and dietary risk factors in Korean adolescents
ConclusionsOur data suggest that prolonged Internet use, particularly during leisure time, is associated with less healthful dietary behaviors in Korean adolescents. (Source: American Journal of Clinical Nutrition)

International tables of glycemic index and glycemic load values 2021: a systematic review
ConclusionsThe availability of new data on the GIs of foods will facilitate wider research and application of the twin concepts of GI and GL. Although the 2021 edition of the tables improves the quality and quantity of GI data available for research and clinical practice, GI testing of regional foods remains a priority. This systematic review was registered in PROSPERO as #171204. (Source: American Journal of Clinical Nutrition)

A guide for authors and readers of the American Society for Nutrition Journals on the proper use of P values and strategies that promote transparency and improve research reproducibility
ABSTRACTTwo questions regarding the scientific literature have become grist for public discussion:1) what place shouldP values have in reporting the results of studies?2) How should the perceived difficulty in replicating the results reported in published studies be addressed? We consider these questions to be 2 sides of the same coin; failing to address them can lead to an incomplete or incorrect message being sent to the reader. IfP values (which are derived from the estimate of the effect size and a measure of the precision of the estimate of the effect) are used improperly, for example reporting only significant findin...

Hepcidin-regulating iron metabolism genes and pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma: a pathway analysis of genome-wide association studies
ConclusionsOur results support that genetic susceptibility related to the hepcidin-regulating gene pathway is associated with PDAC risk and suggest a potential role of iron metabolism in pancreatic carcinogenesis. Further studies are needed to evaluate effect modification by intake of iron-rich foods on this association. (Source: American Journal of Clinical Nutrition)

Mortality and overall and specific infection complication rates in patients who receive parenteral nutrition: systematic review and meta-analysis with trial sequential analysis
ConclusionsThis study suggests that although PN is not associated with greater mortality in hospitalized patients, it is associated with infectious complications. Through TSA, definite conclusions about survival and infection rates could be made. This review was registered atwww.crd.york.ac.uk/prospero/ as CRD42018075599. Abdominal and gluteofemoral fat depots show opposing associations with postprandial lipemia
ConclusionsOur results suggest that higher fat deposition abdominally versus gluteofemorally may be causally associated with elevated postprandial lipemia after a high-fat meal, independent of fasting lipid concentrations and BMI. Furthermore, higher abdominal and gluteofemoral fat depots show opposing effects on postprandial lipemia. This trial was registered atwww.isrctn.com as ISRCTN25867281. Determinants of fatty acid content and composition of human milk fed to infants born weighing & lt;1250 g
ConclusionsThe fat and FA content of human milk fed to VLBW infants is variable. Care must be taken to ensure fat and FA intakes meet recommendations, particularly when feeding a high proportion of donor milk. This trial was registered at clinicaltrials.gov as NCT02137473. Impact of low-fat and full-fat dairy foods on fasting lipid profile and blood pressure: exploratory endpoints of a randomized controlled trial
ConclusionsIn men and women with metabolic syndrome, a diet rich in full-fat dairy had no effects on fasting lipid profile or blood pressure compared with diets limited in dairy or rich in low-fat dairy. Therefore, dairy fat, when consumed as part of complex whole foods, does not adversely impact these classic CVD risk factors. This trial was registered atclinicaltrials.gov as NCT02663544. Breastfeeding and risk of overweight in childhood and beyond: a systematic review with emphasis on sibling-pair and intervention studies
ConclusionsFurther research, using strong study designs, is needed to disentangle the complex relation between infant feeding practices and the risk of subsequent overweight or obesity, as well as the biological and behavioral mechanisms if the relation is causal. Associations between fatty acid composition in serum cholesteryl esters and liver fat, basal fat oxidation, and resting energy expenditure: a population-based study
ConclusionsSeveral serum CE fatty acids are associated with liver fat, among them linoleic acid. Although we identified novel associations between individual fatty acids and RQ and REE, our findings imply that PUFAs might prevent liver fat accumulation through mechanisms other than enhanced whole-body energy metabolism. Reduced adaptive thermogenesis during acute protein-imbalanced overfeeding is a metabolic hallmark of the human thrifty phenotype
ConclusionsDuring acute overfeeding conditions with low/high-protein content, thrifty participants have limited capacity to increase 24EE, indicating that impaired adaptive thermogenesis during protein-imbalanced diets further characterizes thethrifty phenotype and its susceptibility to weight gain. This trial was registered at clinicalTrials.gov as NCT00523627. (Source: American Journal of Clinical Nutrition)
