Cytology Reporting System for Lung Cancer from the Japan Lung Cancer Society and the Japanese Society of Clinical Cytology: An Extensive Study Containing More Benign Lesions
Conclusions: The concordance rate in the JLCS-JSCC system was slightly higher than that in the PSC system; however, the interobserver agreement was moderate in both the JLCS-JSCC and PSC systems. These results indicate that both the JLCS-JSCC and PSC systems are clinically useful. Therefore, both systems are expected to have clinical applications. It may be important to integrate the 2 systems and construct a universal system that can be used more widely in clinical practice.Acta Cytologica (Source: Acta Cytologica)

Cytological Screening Model of Normal Oral Mucosa Exposed to Carcinogens: A Pilot Study
Conclusions: Nuclear area measurement and AgNORs/nucleus and MN quantification identified the incipient phase of oral carcinogenesis. A screening model for individuals without oral lesion exposed to smoking/alcohol was proposed.Acta Cytologica (Source: Acta Cytologica)

Small-Cell Carcinoma of the Lung: What We Learned about It?
Small-cell lung carcinoma (SCLC) is a high-grade aggressive disease that belongs to the neuroendocrine (NE) group of lung tumors that also includes typical carcinoid, atypical carcinoid, and large-cell NE carcinoma. SCLC has specific histological diagnostic criteria that are sometimes troublesome to be assessed in cytological samples that indeed represent the most frequent source of diagnostic material due to the typical advanced presentation at the onset of SCLC. However, cytological preparations could be in some instances more reliable than histology due to the better preservation of nuclear details. Cytological criteria...

Non-Invasive Follicular Thyroid Neoplasm with Papillary-Like Nuclear Features Is Not a Cytological Diagnosis, but It Influences Cytological Diagnosis Outcomes: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
Conclusions: Based on our results, NIFTP remains a histological diagnosis. Although cytomorphological features cannot be used in differentiating NIFTP from FVPTC, they may guide in separating NIFTP from PTC. Features such as papillae, microfollicles, giant cells, psammoma bodies, and the amount of papillary-like nuclear features should be taken into account when suspicious of NIFTP. NIFTP should not have papillae or psammoma bodies, and giant cells were rarely observed.Acta Cytologica (Source: Acta Cytologica)

Comparison of Diagnostic Rates and Concordance with Subsequent Surgical Resections between Conventional Smear and ThinPrep Preparations versus ThinPrep Only in Thyroid Fine Needle Aspiration (T-FNA) Specimens
Conclusion: The combination of CS and LBP may potentially decrease the non-diagnostic rate of T-FNA specimens as well as the number of passes required for diagnosis, particularly with ROSE. Evaluation of morphologic features highlighted in conventional smears may facilitate diagnostic categorization in the “suspicious for follicular neoplasm” category.Acta Cytologica (Source: Acta Cytologica)

Usefulness of Fractal Analysis of Kirsch Edge Images for the Tissue Fragment Inner Structure in Breast FNAB
Conclusion: FKT, which evaluates “tissue fragment darkness,” “tissue fragment shape unevenness,” and “tissue fragment inner structure complexity” focusing on small tissue fragments of HCG in breast FNAB, is useful as a system that assists cytopathological assessment of breast FNAB.Acta Cytologica (Source: Acta Cytologica)

Concordance of Cytological Specimens with Histological Tissue for Detection of Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor Mutation in Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer: A Systematic Review
Conclusion: Cytological specimens have a high concordance rate in detectingEGFR mutations, when compared to HT. LBC has shown superior concordance rates compared to CS and CB. Cytological specimens should be considered as an additional and alternative source of diagnostic material forEGFR testing.Acta Cytologica (Source: Acta Cytologica)

The Dynamics of Pathology Dataset Creation Using Urine Cytology as an Example
Conclusion: Important aspects of pathology dataset creation are presented, illustrating the significant resources required for labelling a large dataset. We present evidence that the time taken to categorise urine cytology images varies by diagnosis/class. The known challenges relating to the reproducibility of the AUC (atypical) category in TPS when compared to the NHGUC (benign) or HGUC (malignant) categories is also confirmed.Acta Cytologica (Source: Acta Cytologica)

Characterizing the Effect of Processing Technique and Solution Type on Cytomorphology Using Liquid-Based Cytology
Conclusions: The most significant difference affecting the cytoplasmic and nuclear areas was the processing technique. The TP method increased the cytoplasmic and nuclear areas, while the methanol-based PreservCyt solution enabled the highest enlargement of the cell. LBC is a superior preparation technique for standardization of the specimens. Our results offer a better understanding of methods suitable for specimen preparation for developing precision AI-based diagnosis in cytology.Acta Cytologica (Source: Acta Cytologica)
