Interpretive Errors in Fine-Needle Aspiration of Thyroid: A 13-Year Institutional Experience in Lebanon
Conclusion: Thyroid FNA IEs can be mitigated by meticulous screening and identification of all elements on FNA smears. Awareness of focal nuclear atypia in reactive cyst-lining and follicular cells in BFN, as well as HCs in HT, is highlighted. Adherence to The Bethesda System for Reporting Thyroid Cytopathology and consulting experienced cytopathologists significantly decrease IEs.Acta Cytologica (Source: Acta Cytologica)

Periosteal Myxoid Leiomyosarcoma Histologically Mimicking Extraskeletal Myxoid Chondrosarcoma: Report of a Case with Histopathological and Cytopathological Comparison with Extraskeletal Myxoid Chondrosarcoma
Myxoid leiomyosarcoma (MLS) is a rare variant of leiomyosarcoma, with most cases occurring in the uterus. A case of MLS arising in the periosteal region of the tibia, mimicking extraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma (EMC), is described. The evaluation included histological and cytological comparison with EMC. The patient was a 77-year-old man with a palpable mass at the anterior aspect of the right lower leg. After diagnosis by cytopathology and biopsy examination, a wide resection was performed. The resulting cytological smears were composed primarily of spindle-shaped tumor cells in a myxoid and hemorrhagic background. Hist...

Efficacy of the Antigenicity-Retaining Ability of Fixative Solutions for Liquid-Based Cytology: Immunocytochemistry of Long-Term Storage
Conclusions: Long-term storage is possible for cell membrane antigens at room temperature; however, it is unsuitable for intranuclear antigens. Therefore, we conclude that suitable fixative type and storage temperature differ based on antigen location. Further investigation is warranted.Acta Cytologica (Source: Acta Cytologica)

Risk Stratification of Breast Fine-Needle Aspiration Biopsy Specimens Performed without Radiologic Guidance by Application of the International Academy of Cytology Yokohama System for Reporting Breast Fine-Needle Aspiration Cytopathology
Conclusion: The IAC Yokohama system is useful in standardizing the reporting of cytopathology of breast lesions. FNAB with radiological guidance is ideal but in cases of finance/resource constraints, FNAB by palpation alone is satisfactory if the test result is in the benign, suspicious of malignancy, or malignant categories, which constitute 91.5% of the cases in this study. A repeat ultrasound-guided FNAB and/or core needle biopsy should be recommended for cases in the insufficient/inadequate or atypical categories.Acta Cytologica (Source: Acta Cytologica)

Evaluation and Quantification of Cytomorphometry in Conjunction with Visual Examination and Exfoliative Cytology in Early Diagnosis of Oral Premalignant and Malignant Lesions
Conclusion: In high-risk cases, morphometry can be a useful adjunct to exfoliative cytology and visual examination for an early and accurate diagnosis and timely intervention in oral potentially malignant and malignant lesions, thereby improving the prognosis.Acta Cytologica (Source: Acta Cytologica)

Fine-Needle Aspiration Cytology in the Diagnosis of Breast Paraffinoma
Conclusion: Most patients with breast paraffinoma can be managed conservatively and they do not require further treatment; FNAC with its characteristic features can provide the reliable diagnosis of breast paraffinoma and therefore sparing these patients from more invasive diagnostic procedures.Acta Cytologica (Source: Acta Cytologica)

Fine-Needle Aspiration Biopsy Cytopathology of Breast Lesions Using the International Academy of Cytology Yokohama System and Rapid On-Site Evaluation: A Single-Institute Experience
Conclusion: Incorporating ROSE and the IAC Yokohama System for breast cytopathology reporting improves accurate diagnosis of breast lesions, prevents missed diagnoses, and provides reliable estimates of ROM. These protocols also aid in standardizing a reproducible system for monitoring and auditing of breast pathology services, identify areas that need strengthening, and improve training at pathology centers.Acta Cytologica (Source: Acta Cytologica)

Cytology of Undifferentiated Round-Cell Sarcomas of Bone and Soft Tissue: Ewing Sarcoma or Not Ewing Sarcoma , That Is the Question
Background: Undifferentiated round-cell sarcomas (URCSs) of soft tissue and bone are a group of clinically heterogeneous tumors. Diagnosis of these malignancies is based mainly on recurrent genetic alterations. The most common and the best known representative of this group is Ewing sarcoma (ES) which is characterized by gene fusions including EWSR1 or FUS and ETS transcription factors family. Other newly described entities are CIC-rearranged sarcoma, sarcoma with BCOR genetic alterations, and round-cell sarcoma with EWSR1-non-ETS fusions. All these novel tumors are known as Ewing-like sarcomas.Summary: It is believed that...

Cytochemical Characterization of Cerebrospinal Fluid Macrophage Inclusions in Pediatric Patients Receiving Intrathecal Nusinersen (SPINRAZA ®) for Spinal Muscular Atrophy
Conclusion: Specimens containing nusinophages had a significantly higher proportion of macrophages and lower proportion of lymphocytes than those in which nusinophages were not detected. The macrophage inclusions do not represent iron or microorganisms and instead are composed, at least in part, of glycosaminoglycans. Because CSF is a common specimen type, cytotechnologists and cytopathologists need to be aware of these inclusions, so they do not interpret them erroneously as evidence of infection or hemorrhage, especially in light of the fact that oligonucleotide therapy has been approved for a variety of conditions and i...
