Multigene Combined Detection by RT-qPCR Using Cytological Specimens
Conclusion: Compared with the CBM, the MCM can improve the efficiency of DNA/RNA extraction and PCR amplification by removing impurities and enriching tumor cells. And we speculate that the successful detection rate of fresh cytological specimens was higher than that of paraffin-embedded specimens. EGFR, ALK, and ROS1 mutations were the main driver mutations in patients with advanced lung adenocarcinoma. We speculate that EGFR and ALK are more prone to concomitant mutations, respectively. Targeted therapies for patients with coexisting mutations need further study.Acta Cytologica (Source: Acta Cytologica)

Cytology of Extraneural Metastases of Nonhematolymphoid Primary Central Nervous System Tumors: Six Cases with Histopathological Correlation and Literature Update
Conclusion: ENM are a rare manifestation of a range of different primary CNS tumors and may involve the ipsilateral head and neck mimicking clinically a salivary gland neoplasm. FNA can rapidly discriminate ENM from other, potentially more indolent conditions. Awareness of the clinical history is paramount to avoid diagnostic confusion.Acta Cytologica (Source: Acta Cytologica)

Seborrheic Keratosis-Like Lesion of the Cervix: First Report of the Cytological Features of a Low-Risk HPV 42-Associated Lesion
Conclusion: This represents the first description of the cytological features of a seborrheic keratosis-like lesion of the cervix, which are distinctive and unusual. Whilst the mild squamous atypia raised the possibility of a low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion, no koilocytes were identified. The association in our case with a low-risk HPV type, HPV 42, provides further evidence for a role of this HPV type in the pathogenesis of these lesions.Acta Cytologica (Source: Acta Cytologica)

Pediatric Small Round Blue Cell Tumors: Cytopathological Puzzle or an Intriguing Scientific Window?
Background: Small round blue cell tumors or more commonly called small round cell tumors (SRCTs) are undifferentiated neoplasms, sharing an overlapping morphological pattern of small round blue cells. Diagnosing these tumors represents a complex challenge for cytopathologists and for general surgical pathologist alike. This stems from the fact that these tumors share not only similar morphological features, but also some immunophenotypic characteristics, thus requiring a broad panel of antibodies, which might not be included in the most basic immunohistochemistry panels, used in the routine work of most pathology laborator...

Ultrasound-Guided Fine-Needle Aspiration of Superficial Lymphadenopathy Performed by Interventional Pathologists: The Applicability of the Sydney System from 2 Years of Experience and 363 Cases
Conclusion: The implementation of the Sydney system allows the systematization and standardization of the lymph node FNA methodology, with increased efficacy and efficiency. Assimilating the recommendations enables the qualification of the diagnostic procedure.Acta Cytologica (Source: Acta Cytologica)

A Machine Learning Tool Using Digital Microscopy (Morphogo) for the Identification of Abnormal Lymphocytes in the Bone Marrow
Morphological analysis of the bone marrow is an essential step in the diagnosis of hematological disease. The conventional analysis of bone marrow smears is performed under a manual microscope, which is labor-intensive and subject to interobserver variability. The morphological differential diagnosis of abnormal lymphocytes from normal lymphocytes is still challenging. The digital pathology methods integrated with advances in machine learning enable new diagnostic features/algorithms from digital bone marrow cell images in order to optimize classification, thus providing a robust and faster screening diagnostic tool. We ha...

Cytological Appearances of Ovarian Seromucinous Borderline Tumor in Ascites: Presentation of 2 Cases
Conclusion: In our experience, the tumor cells of SMBT in ascites mimicked reactive mesothelial cells. The nuclear atypia of SMBTs was intermediate between that of reactive mesothelial cells and serous carcinoma. The immunohistochemistry and mucin staining using cell block were very helpful for facilitating the cytodiagnosis of SMBT.Acta Cytologica (Source: Acta Cytologica)

The Value of Ultrasound-Guided Fine-Needle Aspiration Cytology Combined with Puncture Feeling in the Diagnosis of Thyroid Nodules
Conclusion: Puncture feeling is of great value during US-FNAC. “Hard” and “hard with grittiness” were indicators for malignancy, while “soft” indicated that the thyroid nodule was likely to be benign. The diagnostic value of US-FNAC combined with puncture feeling for thyroid nodules is higher than US-FNAC alone, especially when nodule size is ≤1 c m. Puncture feeling is of great value in predicting the nature of Bethesda III thyroid nodules.Acta Cytologica (Source: Acta Cytologica)

Cell Block and Its Impact in the Diagnosis of Jaw Lesions over Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology
Conclusion: In comparison with FNAC, the architectural pattern and the morphology of the cells were better preserved by the cell block technique. This substantiates that cell block could be used as an ancillary technique to aid in definitive diagnosis of head and neck swellings.Acta Cytologica (Source: Acta Cytologica)

A Review of Effusion Cytomorphology of Small Round Cell Tumors
Background: Small round cell tumors (SRCTs) are a broad category of diverse malignant tumors composed of monotonous undifferentiated cells. Involvement of serous fluids by SRCT is rare; however, the identification of exfoliated malignant cells is a crucial component of management and has significant implications for treatment and prognosis. The most common effusion tumors with SRCT morphology include Ewing sarcoma, synovial sarcoma, rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS), small-cell neuroendocrine carcinoma (SCNC), and desmoplastic SRCT, and the cytomorphologic distinction between these tumors is challenging. The purpose of this article i...

Nuclear Blebbing Frequency in Tobacco-Induced Oral Potentially Malignant Disorders: A Pilot Study
Conclusions: The frequency of nuclear blebbing was significantly higher in oral potentially malignant disorders than normal mucosa. Nuclear blebbing also exhibited a strong dose- and time-dependent correlation with tobacco usage and clinical staging in OSF. The nuclear blebbing frequency could be a noninvasive, economic tool to assess malignant risk in tobacco-induced oral potentially malignant disorders.Acta Cytologica (Source: Acta Cytologica)

Rapid Cell Transfer by Means of Nylon Mesh to Improve Cellular Diagnosis: The Role of Immunocytochemistry
Immunocytochemistry (ICC) is an important ancillary technique in clinical cytology for not only identifying and characterizing tumor cells but also gaining prognostic or therapeutic information. Although cell blocks are often prepared for immunocytochemical evaluation of body cavity fluid and fine-needle aspiration specimens, they are not suitable for hypocellular samples. Liquid-based cytology can help prepare additional smears from residual cytological specimens. However, since conventional methods are used for nongynecological specimens in most laboratories, ICC is often limited by the number of cytological smears. Cell...
