Cytomorphologic Features of Gastric-Type Endocervical Adenocarcinoma in Liquid-Based Preparations
Conclusions: GAS is under-recognized and may mimic reactive endocervical cells. Awareness of the tumor type and its cytomorphology is critical for early detection. Identification of glandular cells with uniform nuclear enlargement in conjunction with any of the other cytologic features may help avoid false-negative Pap results. Neutrophils may serve as convenient size reference and visual aid.Acta Cytologica (Source: Acta Cytologica)

Challenges Developing Deep Learning Algorithms in Cytology
Background: The incorporation of digital pathology into routine pathology practice is becoming more widespread. Definite advantages exist with respect to the implementation of artificial intelligence (AI) and deep learning in pathology, including cytopathology. However, there are also unique challenges in this regard.Summary: This review discusses cytology-specific challenges, including the need to implement digital cytology prior to AI; the large file sizes and increased acquisition times for whole slide images in cytology; the routine use of multiple stains, such as Papanicolaou and Romanowsky stains; the lack of high-qu...

Application of the Milan System for Reporting Salivary Gland Cytopathology: A 10-Year Experience in a Single Japanese Institution
Conclusions: The MSRSGC is useful for stratification of ROM and for promoting the performance of salivary gland FNA. The MSRSGC could be easily introduced in Japan and may improve the Japanese salivary gland FNA status.Acta Cytologica (Source: Acta Cytologica)

Fine Needle Aspiration versus Fine Needle Biopsy of Biliopancreatic Lesions: Are They Really Opposing Techniques or Can They Be Complementary? Our Experience in a Large Cohort of Cases from a Single Institution
Conclusions: Despite numerous data published, it is still unclear which is the most feasible method to use; therefore, we compared FNA, FNB, or their combination to understand the best applicable technique. Our experience confirmed that FNA is extremely efficient in the diagnosis of biliopancreatic lesions, especially in the hands of expert endoscopists and pathologists. Considering anatomic location, EUS-FNA is more accurate for mass-forming neoplasms in the pancreatic parenchyma rather than for lesions of the biliary system. Moreover, concomitant FNB usually confirmed the cytological diagnosis, allowing a deeper immunohi...

The Milan System for Reporting Salivary Gland Cytopathology: Assessment of Cytohistological Concordance and Risk of Malignancy
Conclusion: FNAC is an excellent procedure to differentiate benign from malignant tumors, and MSRSGC is a useful system for risk assessment and deciding the further treatment protocol. Our findings also suggest that in addition to the surgical follow-up, inclusion of the clinical and radiological follow-up may be a better strategy for calculation of ROM, especially for categories I and II.Acta Cytologica (Source: Acta Cytologica)

Developing a Machine Learning Algorithm for Identifying Abnormal Urothelial Cells: A Feasibility Study
Conclusion: Morphogo machine learning algorithm is capable of identifying abnormal urothelial cells. Further validation studies with a larger number of urine samples will be needed to determine if it can be used to assist the cytological diagnosis of UC.Acta Cytologica (Source: Acta Cytologica)

Digital Multiplexed Gene Expression Analysis of mRNA and miRNA from Routinely Processed and Stained Cytological Smears: A Proof-of-Principle Study
Conclusions: Although nCounter ® technology is a robust method to measure and characterize both mRNAs and miRNAs from routinely processed cytological samples, caution is recommended for the interpretation of low-expressed miRNA.Acta Cytologica (Source: Acta Cytologica)

Diagnostic Considerations in the Evaluation of Large B-Cells on Lymph Node Cytology Specimens
Fine needle aspiration (FNA) has become increasingly popular in the evaluation of lymph nodes for lymphoproliferative disorders, but there are limitations to accurate subclassification of lymphoma using morphology alone. This case aims to expand diagnostic considerations of large B-cell populations identified on FNA material. We also address the significance of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) DNA in the workup of patients with suspected lymphoma by FNA.Acta Cytologica (Source: Acta Cytologica)

The Value of Cellblock in Diagnosing Pancreatic Lymphomas
Conclusions: EUS-FNA smears with CBs are helpful diagnostic tools, differentiating lymphomas from other malignancies and from nonneoplastic lymphocyte-rich lesions. CBs allow proper classification and grading of cases of pancreatic lymphomas.Acta Cytologica (Source: Acta Cytologica)

Cytology of SMARCA4-Deficient Thoracic Neoplasms: Comparative Analysis of SMARCA4-Deficient Non-Small Cell Lung Carcinomas and SMARCA4-Deficient Thoracic Sarcomas
Conclusion: A diagnosis of SMARCA4-dTS is possible on cytology with appropriate ancillary testing and a high index of suspicion. The cytology of SMARCA4-dNSCLCs does not overlap with SMARCA4-dTS; rather, it resembles that of any poorly differentiated (adeno)carcinoma in the limited numbers analysed in this study.Acta Cytologica (Source: Acta Cytologica)
