Pathogenic Viruses Have Evolved to Provoke Cellular Senescence
We present a "decentralized" information processing model that conceptualizes neurodegeneration as a systemic illness, triggered by cytoskeletal pathology. We also discuss strategies for reversing cell-cell fusion, including, TMEM16F inhibitors, calcium channel blockers, senolytics, and tubulin stabilizing agents. Finally, going beyond neurodegeneration, we examine the potential benefit of harnessing fusion as a therapeutic strategy in regenerative medicine. Excitable Nanoparticles Destroy Endometriosis Lesions
Researchers at Oregon State University developed a nanoparticle system that can aid with the removal of endometrial lesions in a minimally invasive fashion. In endometriosis, endometrial tissue grows outside of the uterus, causing pain and affecting fertility. Surgery to remove these lesions is often unsuccessful and repeat surgeries are often required. The research team’s nanoparticle technology can aid in minimally invasively destroying such lesions. The iron oxide nanoparticles can be delivered intravenously and are targeted to accumulate in endometrial lesions, and also handily act as an MRI contrast agent. By ap...

Inflation Another Reason to Rethink Buy American Protectionism
Colin GrabowGovernment data released last week placed inflation at8.5 percent over the previous 12 months —the largest such increase since December 1981—withfresh reports noting particularly pronounced price hikes for building materials and supplies. Oddly, the Biden administration decided this was an opportune time to double down on its support for protectionist “Buy American” policies that limit the federal government’s ability to purchase cheaper imported goods when spending taxpayer dollars—and thusraise prices.During a speech last Thursday President Biden highlighted his administration ’s efforts to...

God moves in
Chapter 8 is very long, possibly the longest chapter so far though I haven ' t been keeping track of that. The writers obviously see these events as extremely important, and indeed, this symbolism as resonated through history to the present day. The narrative strongly ties the Israelite religion to a place, a specific spot on earth. In the story from the beginning, they were first a decentralized tribal people without a clearly defined territory, then they were exiled and enslaved, then they were wanderers who carried the main symbol of their religious devotion with them, then they were conquerors but only gradually develo...

Sunday Sermonette: Design specifications
Chapter 6 is just a detailed description of the temple. I don ' t know why we ' re supposed to care about all these architectural and decorative details, and I don ' t really have anything to say about it. Two points, however. In the following chapters Solomon builds his own palace, and it ' s more than 4 times as big (5,000 square cubits vs. 1,200 square cubits, i.e. 1,040 square meters vs. 250 square meters). Also, the calculation of the years since the exodus is wrong. I ' ll just quote SAB:After the Israelites left Egypt, they wandered in the wilderness for 40 years. When they arrived in Israel, they were ruled b...

The Iron(y) in Steel Protectionism
Scott Lincicome andGabriella Beaumont-SmithIn the midst of highinflation, the federal government continues to build on bad policies for the U.S. housing market. Instead of addressing current rules creating an inflexible environment for building houses, the government imposed new duties on steel nails, a crucial component for home construction. These duties will increase the cost of construction, further contributing to scarce housing and higher home prices.Last month, the United States International Trade Commission (ITC) predictablydetermined that the U.S. nail industry has been injured by “dumped” and “subsidi...

“Buy American”-Style Legislation Would Increase the Cost of Sunshine State Public Works Projects
Colin GrabowThe problem with public works projects in Florida, some state politicians believe, is that they ’re too cheap. That at least is one conclusion to be drawn from legislation under consideration in Tallahassee. Rather than purchasing iron and steel from whoever offers the best value, bills circulating in the FloridaHouse andSenate would restrict state public works projects to only using those materials produced by U.S. firms. It ’s doubtful that politicians supporting these bills would limit themselves to only shopping at one store, so why should state public works projects only purchase iron and steel from one...

Last Words -- Not
Ch. 23 first purports to give us David ' s last words, but they aren ' t. David ' s actual last words are given in 1 Kings 2, three chapters and some considerable time later. This chapter then goes on to list David ' s captains and their incredible feats of slaughter, in some cases killing hundreds of Philistines single-handed. Why this list of names and associated mass killings is of interest I cannot say, especially since they were supposedly long dead and forgotten at the time this was written. (Most likely none of them existed at all.) Make of this what you will. Also, since I ' m sure you won ' t count, I ' ll do it f...

In conclusion, as BMI and waist circumference are related to elevations of immune markers in the IL-6 pathway, chronic inflammation might be an important mediator of the relationship between BMI and frailty. Fat Tissue Becomes Dysfunctional with Age as Mitochondria Falter https://www.fightaging.org/archives/2022/02/fat-tissue-becomes-dysfunctional-with-age-as-mitochondria-falter/ Mitochondria are effectively power plants, hundreds of them working in every cell to produce chemical energy store molecules to power cellular processes. Mitochondrial function declines with age, unfortunately, for underlying r...

Protectionist Buy America Requirements Undermine Biden Administration ’s Infrastructure Goals
Colin GrabowLast November President Biden signed into law the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA), a $1.2 trillion bill that the White Houseclaims will produce benefits ranging from clean drinking water to enhanced broadband. What ’s quickly becoming apparent, however, is that the IIJA’s ability to deliver such improvements is being undermined by protectionist measures included in the legislation.Buried within the IIJA —on page 866 of the1,039-page bill—is the Build America, Buy America Act (BABA) which, as the name implies, imposes protectionist “Buy America” mandates requiring the use of U.S.-made p...

SENS Research Foundation on Synergies between Senolysis and Stem Cell Therapy
In their latest newsletter, the SENS Research Foundation leadership noted one of their more recent programs, focused on identifying synergies between senolytic therapies to remove senescent cells and stem cell therapies intended to augment regeneration. It is possible that senolytic treatment could help make the aged tissue environment less hostile, enabling transplanted cells to better aid regeneration and tissue maintenance. This is a comparatively straightforward hypothesis to test in animal studies: all of the necessary tools already exist, and just need to be combined. Finding an improvement would likely speed the ado...

Sunday Sermonette: Sin and Honor
Basically four things happen in Chapter 12.  God sends a messenger, Nathan, to tell David it was bad for him to get Uriah killed and take his wife. Nathan threatens, on behalf of God, to have David ' s wives raped in public. That ' ll teach him! Then he recants the threat and just says that God will kill David ' s and Bathsheba ' s baby. God does kill the Baby. David and Bathsheba have another baby, who will be David ' s successorThe Israelites conquer the Ammonites and enslave them. David gets a new crown (which by the way weighs about 62 pounds). That ' s biblical morality.12 And theLord sent Nath...

Nanowarming of Vitrified Kidneys and Hearts
Long term low temperature storage of living tissue is an active area of research. Cryoprotectant perfusion allows tissues to vitrify on cooling, minimizing ice crystal formation and thus preserving the small scale structure that is vital to tissue function. The challenge of cooling to vitrification is largely the challenge of obtaining good perfusion of cryoprotectant throughout the tissue, something that is much less of an issue for an isolated organ or tissue sample than it is for an entire animal or human. The more significant challenges are those related to the goal of warming vitrified tissue while retaining full func...
