Added value of spectral computed tomography quantitative parameters for differentiating tuberculosis-associated fibrosing mediastinitis from endobronchial lung cancer: initial results
CONCLUSION: There was a moderate correlation between spectrum parameters and conventional parameters. Integrating conventional CT features with spectrum parameters could further improve the ability in differentiating TB-associated FM from EBLC.PMID:38658213 | DOI:10.1016/j.crad.2024.02.010 (Source: Clinical Lung Cancer)

Fixed-bed adsorption of pesticide agricultural waste using cross-linked adsorptive hydrogel composite beads
Environ Sci Pollut Res Int. 2024 Apr 23. doi: 10.1007/s11356-024-33388-6. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAdsorption column blockage due to solid adsorbent material is prevalent in laboratory-scale applications. Creating composite materials with stable geometries offers a viable solution. By crafting hydrogel beads using sodium alginate (Alg) and a bio-source like activated carbon (RMCA-P), it becomes possible to effectively eliminate agricultural pollutants, including the pesticide 2,4-D, from aqueous solutions. To evaluate the performance of these beads, a range of structural and textural analyses such as DRX, FTIR, SEM/ED...

Charge-transfer complexes: halogen-doped anthracene as a case of study
We present a rational and easy guide which allows to foresee the effective charge transfer co-crystal production and that is based on the comparison of the frontier molecular orbital (MO) energies of a donor and acceptor couple. For the sake of comparison, theoretical calculations have been carried out by using the cheap and fast PM6 semiempirical Hamiltonian and pure HF/cc-pVTZ level of the theory. The results are then compared with experimental results obtained both by chemical (bromine and iodine were used as the acceptor) and electrochemical doping (exploiting an original experimental set-up by this laboratory: the ele...

Infection risk reduction with povidone-iodine rectal disinfection prior to transrectal prostate biopsy: an updated systematic review and meta-analysis
ConclusionRectal disinfection with PI significantly reduces the rates of infectious complications and fever in patients undergoing TRUS-PB. However, this approach does not show a significant impact on reducing the rate of sepsis following the procedure. (Source: World Journal of Urology)

Task-based automatic keV selection: leveraging routine virtual monoenergetic imaging for dose reduction on clinical photon-counting detector CT
Phys Med Biol. 2024 Apr 22. doi: 10.1088/1361-6560/ad41b3. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPhoton-counting detector (PCD) CT enables routine virtual-monoenergetic image (VMI) reconstruction. We evaluated the performance of an automatic VMI energy level (keV) selection tool on a clinical PCD-CT system in comparison to an automatic tube potential (kV) selection tool from an energy-integrating-detector (EID) CT system from the same manufacturer.
Approach: Four torso-shaped phantoms (20-50 cm width) containing iodine (2, 5, and 10-mg/cc) and calcium (100 mg/cc) were scanned on PCD-CT and EID-CT. Dose optimization techni...

Standard therapy or additionally radioactive iodine (131I) therapy; which will stop the recurrence of glioblastoma multiforme (GBM)?
Endokrynol Pol. 2024 Apr 22. doi: 10.5603/ep.98240. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTGlioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is the most aggressive malignant brain tumour. The average survival time for a patient diagnosed with GBM, using standard treatment methods, is several months. Authors of the article pose a direct question: Is it possible to treat GBM solely with radioactive iodine (¹³¹I) therapy without employing the sodium iodide symporter (NIS) gene? After all, NIS has been detected not only in the thyroid but also in various tumours. The main author of this article (A.C.), with the assistance of her colleagues (physicians ...
