Analysis of new-onset seizures following use of COVID-19 vaccinations in children based on VAERS
CONCLUSION: No statistically significant risk signal of COVID-19 vaccine-related seizures was found in this study. However, it is still necessary to monitor the possibility of new-onset seizures when children are immunized with COVID-19 vaccines.PMID:38666296 | DOI:10.1080/14740338.2024.2348568 (Source: Expert Opinion on Drug Safety)

Mapping Lung Hematopoietic Progenitors: Developmental Kinetics and Response to Influenza A Infection
Am J Respir Cell Mol Biol. 2024 Apr 26. doi: 10.1165/rcmb.2023-0395OC. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe bone marrow is a specialised niche responsible for the maintenance of hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells during homeostasis and inflammation. Recent studies however have extended this essential role to the extramedullary and extravascular lung microenvironment. Here, we provide further evidence for a reservoir of hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells within the lung from embryonic day 18.5 until adulthood. These lung progenitors display distinct microenvironment-specific developmental kinetics compared to their b...

Interactions between avian viruses and skin in farm birds
This article reviews the avian viruses that infect the skin of domestic farm birds of primary economic importance: chicken, duck, turkey, and goose. Many avian viruses (e.g., poxviruses, herpesviruses, Influenza viruses, retroviruses) leading to pathologies infect the skin and the appendages of these birds. Some of these viruses (e.g., Marek's disease virus, avian influenza viruses) have had and/or still have a devasting impact on the poultry economy. The skin tropism of these viruses is key to the pathology and virus life cycle, in particular for virus entry, shedding, and/or transmission. In addition, for some emergent a...

Detection of Influenza D Antibodies in Dogs, Apulia Region, Italy, 2016 and 2023
Emerg Infect Dis. 2024 May;30(5):1045-1047. doi: 10.3201/eid3005.231401.ABSTRACTDogs are known to be susceptible to influenza A viruses, although information on influenza D virus (IDV) is limited. We investigated the seroprevalence of IDV in 426 dogs in the Apulia region of Italy during 2016 and 2023. A total of 14 samples were positive for IDV antibodies, suggesting exposure to IDV in dogs.PMID:38666735 | DOI:10.3201/eid3005.231401 (Source: Emerging Infectious Diseases)

Severe A(H1N1)pdm09 influenza acute encephalopathy outbreak in children in Tuscany, Italy, December 2023 to January 2024
This report raises awareness for clinicians to identify and treat early acute encephalopathy caused by H1N1 influenza and serves as a reminder of severe presentations of influenza in young children and the importance of vaccination.PMID:38666399 | DOI:10.2807/1560-7917.ES.2024.29.17.2400199 (Source: Euro Surveill)

Development and evaluation of a multiplex real-time RT-PCR assay for simultaneous detection of H5, H7, and H9 subtype avian influenza viruses
In this study, the multiplex H5/7/9 rRT-PCR assay was developed with sets of primers and probe updated or newly designed to simultaneously detect the H5, H7 and H9 genes. Multiplex H5/7/9 rRT-PCR showed 100% specificity without cross-reactivity with other subtypes of AIVs and avian disease-causing viruses or bacteria, and the limit of detection was 1 to 10 EID50/0.1ml (50% egg infectious dose). Artificial mixed infections with the three different subtypes could be detected accurately with high analytical sensitivity even under highly biased relative molecular ratios by balancing the reactivities of each subtype by modifyin...
