A multidisciplinary team approach to the long-term management of infective endocarditis: Complex management for complex patients
Infective endocarditis (IE) is a complex and acutely life-threatening condition with high rates of morbidity and mortality [1 –3]. IE has the potential for severe cardiac complications including valve dysfunction, heart failure, and abscess formation, along with systemic complications including systemic infection, embolic events, and stroke. High rates of adverse outcomes are reported with IE including short-term mortali ty rates of 20% and embolic events complicating up to 50% of cases [4]. Accordingly, the acute management of IE is multifaceted and necessitates a multidisciplinary approach. (Source: International Journal of Cardiology)

Infective endocarditis : In-hospital mortality predictive factors
CONCLUSIONS: Cardiac and cerebral complications influence the prognosis of IE. Thus, close collaboration among multidisciplinary teams is necessary for improved diagnostic and therapeutic management.PMID:38417204 | DOI:10.1016/j.ancard.2024.101740 (Source: Annales de Cardiologie et d'Angeiologie)

Comparative effectiveness of empirical antibiotic treatments in methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus infective endocarditis: a post hoc analysis of a prospective French cohort study
In most cases, treatment of infective endocarditis (IE) is empirical until the causative pathogens are identified, with two major important points. First, empirical antimicrobial therapy (EAT) is the cornerstone of sepsis therapy and any delay in time to appropriate antimicrobial therapy increases sepsis mortality, particularly in cases of septic shock [1]. Second, since Staphylococcus aureus is the leading cause of IE and is associated with higher mortality [2,3], it is crucial that EAT for infective endocarditis includes drugs that have optimal anti-staphylococcal activity [4,5]. Talaromyces marneffei endocarditis initially detected by Next Generation Sequencing: A case report
CONCLUSION: Infective endocarditis is becoming more and more common in the elderly due to the widely use of invasive surgical procedures and implantation of intracardiac devices. The diagnosis and treatment of T. marneffei endocarditis is challenging because of its rarity. Here, we discussed a case of T. marneffei endocarditis, and emphasized the role of mNGS in early diagnosis, which is of great significance for treatment and survival rate of patients.PMID:38394877 | DOI:10.1016/j.ijmm.2024.151615 (Source: International Journal of Medical Microbiology)

Involvement of peptidylarginine deiminase 4 in eosinophil extracellular trap formation and contribution to citrullinated histone signal in thrombi
CONCLUSIONS: As in NETosis, PAD4 can catalyze the formation of EETs. Inhibition of PAD4 decreases EET formation, supporting the future utility of PAD4 inhibitors as possible antithrombotic agents.PMID:38395360 | DOI:10.1016/j.jtha.2024.02.010 (Source: Thrombosis and Haemostasis)
