Heart failure - An unexplored risk factor for infective endocarditis after pacemaker implantation
CONCLUSION: In PPM population, HF was associated with an increased risk of IE compared to those without HF. We hypothesize that HF being a low-flow and high-inflammatory state might have contributed to this increased risk. Larger studies are required to corroborate our findings and evaluate the need for antimicrobial prophylaxis for this population.PMID:38583663 | DOI:10.1016/j.jjcc.2024.04.002 (Source: Journal of Cardiology)

Surgical management of multiple coronary artery to coronary sinus fistulas with giant left circumflex artery and multivalvular infective endocarditis
Coronary artery fistula (CAF) is characterized as a congenital or acquired abnormal communication between a coronary artery and any of the four chambers of the heart (coronary –cameral fistula) or great vessels... (Source: Journal of Cardiothoracic Surgery)

Partial heart transplantation for destructive infective endocarditis
AbstractInfective endocarditis frequently spreads beyond the valve tissue, especially in the aortic location. Invasive endocarditis may lead to abscess formation or fistula, with substantial tissue loss. Here, the case of a 31-year-old male patient with destructive aortic and pulmonary valve endocarditis and a subaortic mural defect who underwent patch closure of the ventricular septal defect and aortic and pulmonary root replacement and right coronary artery bypass graft is presented. This is an uncommon condition and stress is placed on imaging of the technical aspects of the case. (Source: Indian Journal of Thoracic and...

Streptococcus gordonii ‐associated infective endocarditis: Case series, literature review, and genetic study
We describe three cases of infective endocarditis caused byS. gordonii during a four-week period in 2023, and the use of whole-genome sequencing to determine whether these isolates were genetically related. The available literature was reviewed. (Source: Clinical Case Reports)

Molecular Imaging Techniques in the Diagnosis and Monitoring of Infectious Diseases
AbstractPurpose of ReviewCombined positron emission tomography and computer tomography with 2-deoxy-[fluorine-18]-flouro-D-glucose ([18F]FDG-PET/CT) is increasingly used in suspected infection and inflammation. Evidence is mounting within several areas. We believe [18F]FDG-PET/CT is a key modality in infection and inflammation and this overview outlines the diagnostic values in most common uses within this domain.Recent Findings[18F]FDG-PET/CT is considered helpful in establishing the underlying disease in 50 –60% of FUO patients. In patients with complex blood stream infections, [18F]FDG-PET/CT changes treatment and red...

Impact of Hemoglobin Level, White Blood Cell Count, Renal Dysfunction, and Staphylococcus as the Causative Organism on Prediction of In-Hospital Mortality from Infective Endocarditis
In this study, a total of 162 patients who were admitted to our hospital during the period from 2009 to 2021, who were suspected of having IE according to the modified Duke classification, and for whom IE was confirmed by transesophageal echocardiography were retrospectively analyzed. Patients were observed for a mean-period of 43.7 days with the primary endpoint being in-hospital death. The in-hospital death group had a lower level of hemoglobin (Hb), higher white blood cell (WBC) count, lower level of estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), and higher frequency of Staphylococcus being the causative agent than those ...
