A multidisciplinary team approach to the long-term management of infective endocarditis: Complex management for complex patients

Infective endocarditis (IE) is a complex and acutely life-threatening condition with high rates of morbidity and mortality [1 –3]. IE has the potential for severe cardiac complications including valve dysfunction, heart failure, and abscess formation, along with systemic complications including systemic infection, embolic events, and stroke. High rates of adverse outcomes are reported with IE including short-term mortali ty rates of 20% and embolic events complicating up to 50% of cases [4]. Accordingly, the acute management of IE is multifaceted and necessitates a multidisciplinary approach.
