The role of prediction error in the development of language learning and memory
AbstractPrediction error plays a pivotal role in theories of learning, including theories of language acquisition and use. Researchers have investigated whether and under which conditions children, like adults, use prediction to facilitate language comprehension at different levels of linguistic representation. However, many aspects of the reciprocal relation between prediction error and the development of language learning remain unclear. In this article, we review studies in language development that can inform us about the role of prediction error in updating, learning, and retrieving linguistic information. We argue th...

Immuno-modulatory role of baicalin in atherosclerosis prevention and treatment: current scenario and future directions
Front Immunol. 2024 Apr 18;15:1377470. doi: 10.3389/fimmu.2024.1377470. eCollection 2024.ABSTRACTAtherosclerosis (AS) is recognized as a chronic inflammatory condition characterized by the accumulation of lipids and inflammatory cells within the damaged walls of arterial vessels. It is a significant independent risk factor for ischemic cardiovascular disease, ischemic stroke, and peripheral arterial disease. Despite the availability of current treatments such as statins, proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9) inhibitors, and lifestyle modifications for prevention, AS remains a leading cause of morbidity and ...

The End of the Beginning? Temporality and Bioagency in Pandemic Research
J Hist Med Allied Sci. 2024 May 3:jrae006. doi: 10.1093/jhmas/jrae006. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThis paper deals with the ways in which the intellectual and political history of AIDS can assist in the chronological conceptualization of a pandemic such as COVID-19 as it is unfolding. It problematizes the idea of pandemic "beginnings" and "ends" to show that such definitions are shaped by the disciplinary location and thematic foci of relevant scholars. Central to this analysis is the notion that ethical and political contexts affect research on a pandemic in different ways at national and global levels at various point...

The association between single-nucleotide polymorphisms within type 1 interferon pathway genes and human immunodeficiency virus type 1 viral load in antiretroviral-na ïve participants
Human genetic contribution to HIV progression remains inadequately explained. The type 1 interferon (IFN) pathway is important for host control of HIV and variation in type 1 IFN genes may contribute to diseas... (Source: AIDS Research and Therapy)

External auditory canal reconstruction using a novel mastoidoplasty technique during canal wall down mastoidectomy: how I do it
ConclusionsThe concept of our mastoidoplasty potentially provides a very useful alternative in recreating a near normal ear canal anatomy avoiding cavity problems as well as facilitating hearing aid fitting with canal type hearing aids after canal wall down mastoidectomy. Greater utilization of executive functions networks when listening to stories with visual stimulation is related to lower reading abilities in children
Brain Cogn. 2024 May 1;177:106161. doi: 10.1016/j.bandc.2024.106161. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTNarrative comprehension relies on basic sensory processing abilities, such as visual and auditory processing, with recent evidence for utilizing executive functions (EF), which are also engaged during reading. EF was previously related to the "supporter" of engaging the auditory and visual modalities in different cognitive tasks, with evidence of lower efficiency in this process among those with reading difficulties in the absence of a visual stimulus (i.e. while listening to stories). The current study aims to fill out the g...

The association between single-nucleotide polymorphisms within type 1 interferon pathway genes and human immunodeficiency virus type 1 viral load in antiretroviral-na ïve participants
CONCLUSION: Across 19 type 1 IFN genes, only IFNW1 was associated with HIV-1 study entry VL in a cohort of ART-naïve individuals in early stages of their infection, however, this was no longer significant in sensitivity analyses that controlled for population structures using LME.PMID:38698440 | DOI:10.1186/s12981-024-00610-x (Source: AIDS Research and Therapy)

Stunting and its associated factors among children living with HIV/AIDS: a cross-sectional study
CONCLUSION: Stunting among HIV/AIDS-infected children was very high. Poor ART adherence, lack of co-trimoxazole prophylaxis, opportunistic infection, and low feeding frequency were significantly associated to stunting among HIV/AIDS-infected children. Strategies need to be devised to address factors amenable to modification to improve the growth of children living with HIV/AIDS.PMID:38694360 | PMC:PMC11060262 | DOI:10.1097/MS9.0000000000001961 (Source: Annals of Medicine)

Prevalence and incidence of anal high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions in a cohort of cisgender men and transgender women who have sex with men diagnosed and treated during acute HIV acquisition in Bangkok, Thailand
CONCLUSIONS: With antiretroviral therapy initiation during acute HIV acquisition, we found the prevalence of anal HSIL among cisgender men and transgender women who have sex with men to be similar to those without HIV. Subsequent anal HSIL incidence, although lower than that of those with chronic HIV acquisition, was still higher than that of those without HIV. Screening for and management of anal HSIL should be a crucial part of long-term HIV care for all MSM.PMID:38695517 | DOI:10.1002/jia2.26242 (Source: Journal of the International AIDS Society)
