Population impacts of conditional financial incentives and a male-targeted digital decision support application on the HIV treatment cascade in rural KwaZulu Natal: findings from the HITS cluster randomized clinical trial
CONCLUSIONS: Small CFIs can contribute to achieve the first step of the HIV care cascade. However, neither CFIs nor EPIC-HIV was sufficient to increase the number of people on ART. Additional evidence is needed to confirm the impact of EPIC-HIV on viral suppression.PMID:38695099 | DOI:10.1002/jia2.26248 (Source: Journal of the International AIDS Society)

IoT-based waste management: hybrid optimal routing and waste classification model
Environ Sci Pollut Res Int. 2024 May 2. doi: 10.1007/s11356-024-33418-3. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTInternet of Things (IoT) makes connectivity between physical devices which are embedded with sensors, software, and connectivity that let them to communicate and transfer data. This technology makes it possible to collect and transfer data from a vast network device, opening the door to the development of automatic and more efficiency systems. The term "waste management" refers to all of the responsibilities essential to regulate trash, from the point of gathering through reusing and monitoring. Reducing the hazardous con...

Greater utilization of executive functions networks when listening to stories with visual stimulation is related to lower reading abilities in children
Brain Cogn. 2024 May 1;177:106161. doi: 10.1016/j.bandc.2024.106161. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTNarrative comprehension relies on basic sensory processing abilities, such as visual and auditory processing, with recent evidence for utilizing executive functions (EF), which are also engaged during reading. EF was previously related to the "supporter" of engaging the auditory and visual modalities in different cognitive tasks, with evidence of lower efficiency in this process among those with reading difficulties in the absence of a visual stimulus (i.e. while listening to stories). The current study aims to fill out the g...

The association between single-nucleotide polymorphisms within type 1 interferon pathway genes and human immunodeficiency virus type 1 viral load in antiretroviral-na ïve participants
CONCLUSION: Across 19 type 1 IFN genes, only IFNW1 was associated with HIV-1 study entry VL in a cohort of ART-naïve individuals in early stages of their infection, however, this was no longer significant in sensitivity analyses that controlled for population structures using LME.PMID:38698440 | DOI:10.1186/s12981-024-00610-x (Source: AIDS Research and Therapy)

Stunting and its associated factors among children living with HIV/AIDS: a cross-sectional study
CONCLUSION: Stunting among HIV/AIDS-infected children was very high. Poor ART adherence, lack of co-trimoxazole prophylaxis, opportunistic infection, and low feeding frequency were significantly associated to stunting among HIV/AIDS-infected children. Strategies need to be devised to address factors amenable to modification to improve the growth of children living with HIV/AIDS.PMID:38694360 | PMC:PMC11060262 | DOI:10.1097/MS9.0000000000001961 (Source: Annals of Medicine)

Prevalence and incidence of anal high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions in a cohort of cisgender men and transgender women who have sex with men diagnosed and treated during acute HIV acquisition in Bangkok, Thailand
CONCLUSIONS: With antiretroviral therapy initiation during acute HIV acquisition, we found the prevalence of anal HSIL among cisgender men and transgender women who have sex with men to be similar to those without HIV. Subsequent anal HSIL incidence, although lower than that of those with chronic HIV acquisition, was still higher than that of those without HIV. Screening for and management of anal HSIL should be a crucial part of long-term HIV care for all MSM.PMID:38695517 | DOI:10.1002/jia2.26242 (Source: Journal of the International AIDS Society)

Experiences of oral pre-exposure prophylaxis use among heterosexual men accessing sexual and reproductive health services in South Africa: a qualitative study
CONCLUSIONS: Our study reports on the experiences of heterosexual men accessing oral PrEP in real-world settings and contributes to the limited literature among this population. We highlight multiple levels which could be strengthened to improve men's PrEP use, including individual support, education among partners and communities, and addressing health system barriers to access.PMID:38695102 | DOI:10.1002/jia2.26249 (Source: Journal of the International AIDS Society)

Urine tenofovir testing for real-time PrEP adherence feedback: a qualitative study involving transgender women in Uganda
CONCLUSIONS: Incorporating POC urine testing into routine PrEP adherence counselling was acceptable and potentially beneficial for TGW but required attention to context. Additional research is needed to identify effective strategies for optimizing adherence monitoring and counselling for this population.PMID:38695107 | DOI:10.1002/jia2.26255 (Source: Journal of the International AIDS Society)

Impact of simplified HCV diagnostic strategies on the HCV epidemic among men who have sex with men in the era of HIV oral pre-exposure prophylaxis in Taiwan: a modelling study
CONCLUSIONS: Simplified HCV diagnostic strategies could control the ongoing HCV epidemic and improve HCV testing and treatment among Taiwanese MSM. Single-visit point-of-care RNA testing would result in large reductions in HCV incidence and prevalence among MSM. Efficient risk-reduction strategies will need to be implemented alongside point-of-care testing to achieve HCV elimination among MSM in Taiwan.PMID:38695100 | DOI:10.1002/jia2.26251 (Source: Journal of the International AIDS Society)
