The association between transformation ability and antimicrobial resistant potential in Haemophilus influenzae
In this study, we examined whether this horizontal gene transfer could be associated with resistance to not only quinolones but also other antimicrobial agents. Horizontal transfer ability was quantified using the experimental transfer assay method for low quinolone susceptibility. Further, the association between horizontal transfer ability and resistance to β-lactams, the first-choice drugs for H. influenzae infection, was investigated. The transformation efficiency of 50 clinical isolates varied widely, ranging from 102 to 106 CFU of the colonies obtained by horizontal transfer assay. Efficiency was associated with β-...

Shorter versus longer duration of antibiotic treatment in children with bacterial meningitis: a systematic review and meta-analysis
Conclusion: Because no statistically significant differences were found between groups for the analyzed outcomes, the results of this meta-analysis support shorter therapy. However, generalizing these results to complicated meningitis and infections caused by other pathogens should be made with caution.  (PROSPERO identifier: CRD42022369843).What is Known:• Current recommendations on the duration of antibiotic therapy for bacterial meningitis are mostly based on clinical practice.• Defining an optimal duration of antibiotic therapy is essential for antimicrobial stewardship achievement, improving patient outcomes, an...

Current Approach in the Management of Secondary Immunodeficiency in Patients with Hematological Malignancies: Spanish Expert Consensus Recommendations
J Clin Med. 2023 Oct 4;12(19):6356. doi: 10.3390/jcm12196356.ABSTRACTA Delphi-based survey was designed to assess the opinions of clinical hematologists (n = 17) and clinical immunologists (n = 18) from across Spain on secondary immunodeficiencies (SID) in the management of oncohematological patients. There was 100% agreement on the need to have available guidelines for the management of immunodeficiency in hematological patients; to perform a baseline immunological evaluation in patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), multiple myeloma (MM), lymphoma and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) recipients; ...

Epidemiology of common infectious diseases before and during the COVID-19 pandemic in Bavaria, Germany, 2016 to 2021: an analysis of routine surveillance data
ConclusionReductions for various infectious diseases and changes in case characteristics in 2020 and 2021 indicate reduced transmission of notifiable diseases other than COVID-19 due to interventions and under-detection.PMID:37824248 | DOI:10.2807/1560-7917.ES.2023.28.41.2300030 (Source: Euro Surveill)
