Emerging Maripa Hantavirus as a Potential Cause of a Severe Health Threat in French Guiana
We describe the clinical parameters and management of nine confirmed cases of hantavirus pulmonary syndrome reported in French Guiana since 2008. All patients were admitted to Cayenne Hospital. Seven patients were men and the mean age was 48 years (range, 19-71 years). Two phases characterized the disease. The prodromal phase was characterized by fever (77.8%), myalgia (66.7%), and gastrointestinal symptoms (vomiting and diarrhea; 55.6%) starting, on average, 5 days before the illness phase, which was characterized by respiratory failure in all patients. Five patients died (55.6%) and the length of stay in the intensive ca...

Viruses, Vol. 15, Pages 612: Tropism of Puumala orthohantavirus and Endoparasite Coinfection in the Bank Vole Reservoir
iane Herden In Europe, most cases of human hantavirus disease are caused by Puumala orthohantavirus (PUUV) transmitted by bank voles (Clethrionomys glareolus, syn. Myodes glareolus), in which PUUV causes inconspicuous infection. Little is known about tropism and endoparasite coinfections in PUUV-infected reservoir and spillover-infected rodents. Here, we characterized PUUV tropism, pathological changes and endoparasite coinfections. The voles and some non-reservoir rodents were examined histologically, immunohistochemically, by in situ hybridization, indirect IgG enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and reverse transcript...

Viruses, Vol. 15, Pages 532: Characterization of a Panel of Cross-Reactive Hantavirus Nucleocapsid Protein-Specific Monoclonal Antibodies
Rainer G. Ulrich Hantaviruses are emerging pathogens with a worldwide distribution that can cause life-threatening diseases in humans. Monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) against hantavirus nucleocapsid (N) proteins are important tools in virus diagnostics, epidemiological studies and basic research studies on virus replication and pathogenesis. Here, we extend the collection of previously generated MAbs raised against a segment of Puumala orthohantavirus (PUUV) N protein harbored on virus-like particles (VLPs) and MAbs against N proteins of Sin Nombre orthohantavirus/Andes orthohantavirus by generating nine novel MAbs agains...

Identification of novel inhibitors against hantaviruses through 2D fingerprinting and molecular modeling approaches
In this study, an envelope glycoprotein, Gn, was targeted. The glycoproteins, which are the sole targets of neutralizing antibodies, drive virus entry via receptor-mediated endocytosis and endosomal membrane fusion. Inhibitors are herein proposed to negate its action mechanism. On the basis of the scaffolds of favipiravir, a FDA compound already used against hantavirus, a library was designed using a 2D fingerprinting approach. Upon molecular docking analysis, the top four docked compounds—(1) favipiravir (-4.5 kcal/mol), (2) N-hydroxy-3-oxo-3, 4-dihydropyrazine-2-carboxamide (-4.7 kcal/mol), (3) N, 5, 6-trimethyl-2-oxo-...

Hantavirus infection as a risk factor for chronic kidney disease of unknown aetiology (CKDu) and its prevalence in endemic areas of Sri Lanka since 2010 according to a retrospective serological analysis
Conclusion. Hantavirus infection has been prevalent in two distant CKDu-endemic areas since 2010. The observed significant association of hantavirus seropositivity with CKDu indicates a possible role of hantavirus infection in CKDu pathogenesis.PMID:36748416 | DOI:10.1099/jmm.0.001630 (Source: Journal of Medical Microbiology)
