UCLA scientists use stem cells to study genetics of germ cell tumors
UCLA researchers have made new inroads into understanding germ cell tumors, a diverse and rare group of cancers that begin in germ cells — the cells that develop into sperm and eggs. The researchers developed a protocol to recreate germ cell tumor cells from stem cells and used the new model to study the genetics of the cancer.Their findings could point the way toward new drugs to treat germ cell tumors, which account for around 3 percent of all cases of childhood and adolescent cancer. The study, published in Stem Cell Research, was led by Amander Clark, a UCLA professor of molecular cell and developmental biology and a ...

Solving the mystery of a shapeshifting neck tumor
Jaedin, 10 years old, holds the control for a remote-controlled race car, Christmas 2017. Amanda Brown couldn’t shake an uneasy intuition that something just seemed “off” throughout her second pregnancy. During a scheduled caesarian section at her local hospital in North Carolina, her instinct proved to be true. “I had given birth to my first son by C-section so I knew what to expect,” Amanda says. “But this time around, as the surgeons totally stalled in the middle of the delivery, I thought to myself, ‘it doesn’t take this long to pull a baby out.’” When her son Jaedin was finally delivered, Amanda an...

Could BEP Reduce the Risk of Brain Metastasis in Testicular Cancer?
A post-hoc analysis found that brain metastases are more frequent in patients with advanced germ cell tumors who have received dose-dense chemotherapy compared with those administered the BEP regimen. (Source: CancerNetwork)

Study sheds new light on inherited testicular cancer risk
(University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine) An analysis of data from five major studies of testicular cancer has identified new genetic locations that could be susceptible to inherited testicular germ cell tumors. The findings, which researchers call a success story for genome mapping, could help doctors understand which men are at the highest risk of developing the disease and signal them to screen those patients. Reduced, Compressed Chemotherapy Fails in Pediatric Germ Cell Tumors
Event-free survival was not maintained in children and adolescents with intermediate-risk malignant germ cell tumors when cisplatin-based chemotherapy was reduced from four to three cycles and compressed from 5 to 3 days per cycles. (Source: CancerNetwork)

Single-Cycle of BEP Shows Promise Against Testicular Cancer Recurrence
A single cycle of adjuvant bleomycin, etoposide, and cisplatin (BEP) chemotherapy might reduce recurrence rates for nonseminomatous or combined germ cell tumors of the testis. (Source: CancerNetwork)

New test to predict relapse of testicular cancers
Scientists have developed a new test to identify patients who are at risk of suffering a relapse from testicular cancer. Assessing just three features of a common kind of testicular cancer -- called non-seminomatous germ cell tumor -- can identify those at most at risk of relapse even where there is no evidence of tumor spread. The researchers believe the test could be used in the clinic to make decisions about which patients should be given chemotherapy. (Source: ScienceDaily Headlines)
