A mother’s intuition—and a fall down the stairs—save a little girl’s life
Photo: Kate Ackermann Photography Liz Beaulieu is likely the only person in the world who can say she saved her child by falling down the stairs. Her daughter, Arielle, was just 4 days old. Liz was carrying her downstairs when she slipped. Not sure whether Arielle had hit her head, she whisked her to her local ER. “She seemed fine, and they said that she looked fine,” Liz says. Still concerned, though, Liz kept a close eye on Arielle over the next couple of days. That’s when she noticed something. “I noticed the slightest flicker of her eyes,” Liz recalls, “and decided that I wanted to g...

UCLA study finds cells that become sperm or eggs in humans are vulnerable during pregnancy
UCLA scientists examining causes of human infertility have found that the cells that create eggs or sperm during the prenatal stage of development are vulnerable to damage, according to new research published today. The study by Amander Clark, of the UCLA Eli and Edythe Broad Center of Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cell Research, was published in the journal Cell. Clark said that the findings advance the understanding of human germ cells, which are responsible for carrying parents’ genes to a child. Abnormalities in the germ cells can cause infertility as well as diseases such as germ cell tumors in young boys and prima...

Therapeutic Human Monoclonal Antibodies in Inflammatory Diseases
Monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) are antibodies of a single antigen specificity produced by identical immune cells, i.e., clones of a common germ cell. They offer unprecedented opportunities to drug development because of their ability to target almost any cell surface or secreted molecule with remarkable efficacy and safety. In this chapter, the application of human mAbs in the treatment of inflammatory diseases is reviewed. We discuss in detail several mAb-based drugs such as anti-tumor necrosis factor (anti-TNF), anti-interleukin-1 (anti-IL-1) receptor, anti-IL-6 receptor, anti-α4 integrin subunit, and anti-CD20 agent...

UCLA researchers find potential link between auto pollution, some childhood cancers
Scientists from UCLA's Fielding School of Public Health led by Julia Heck, an assistant researcher in the school's epidemiology department and a member of UCLA's Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center, have found a possible link between exposure to traffic-related air pollution and several childhood cancers.   The results of their study — the first to examine air pollution from traffic and a number of rarer childhood cancers — were presented on April 9 in an abstract at the annual meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research in Washington, D.C.   For the study, the UCLA researchers utilized data on 3,...
