Viruses, Vol. 13, Pages 1475: Yellow Fever Outbreak in Eastern Senegal, 2020 –2021
We report an outbreak that occurred from October 2020 to February 2021 in eastern Senegal, notified and managed through the synergistic effort yellow fever national surveillance implemented by the Senegalese Ministry of Health in collaboration with the World Health Organization, the countrywide 4S network set up by the Ministry of Health, the Institut Pasteur de Dakar, and the surveillance of arboviruses and hemorrhagic fever viruses in human and vector populations implemented since mid 2020 in eastern Senegal. Virological analyses highlighted the implication of sylvatic mosquito species in virus transmission. Genomic anal...

Mapping survey of schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminthiases towards mass drug administration in The Gambia
ConclusionsWe identified that 24/42(57%) districts mapped in The Gambia are endemic for schistosomiasis expressing the need for preventive chemotherapy. Twenty (47%) of the districts mapped are endemic for STH. However, only two STH endemic districts namely Banjul (55%) and Kombo South (22%) were within rates eligible for mass drug administration. Seasonal modulation of antibody response to diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis vaccination in infants: a cohort study in rural Gambia
In rural Gambia, rates of malnutrition and infection are higher during the annual rainy/ ‘hungry’ season (June–October) in comparison to the dry/‘harvest’ season (November–May). The effects of this seasonal pat... (Source: BMC Public Health)

Intense and Mild First Epidemic Wave of Coronavirus Disease, The Gambia
Emerg Infect Dis. 2021 Aug;27(8):2064-2072. doi: 10.3201/eid2708.204954.ABSTRACTThe severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic is evolving differently in Africa than in other regions. Africa has lower SARS-CoV-2 transmission rates and milder clinical manifestations. Detailed SARS-CoV-2 epidemiologic data are needed in Africa. We used publicly available data to calculate SARS-CoV-2 infections per 1,000 persons in The Gambia. We evaluated transmission rates among 1,366 employees of the Medical Research Council Unit The Gambia (MRCG), where systematic surveillance of symptomatic cases and contact tr...

Enantiospecific antitrypanosomal < i > in vitro < /i > activity of eflornithine
by Mikael Boberg, Monica Cal, Marcel Kaiser, Rasmus Jansson-L öfmark, Pascal Mäser, Michael Ashton The polyamine synthesis inhibitor eflornithine is a recommended treatment for the neglected tropical disease Gambian human African trypanosomiasis in late stage. This parasitic disease, transmitted by the tsetse fly, is lethal unless treated. Eflornithine is administered by repeated intravenous in fusions as a racemic mixture of L-eflornithine and D-eflornithine. The study compared thein vitro antitrypanosomal activity of the two enantiomers with the racemic mixture against threeTrypanosoma brucei gambiense strains. Antitr...

Linking external debt and renewable energy to environmental sustainability in heavily indebted poor countries: new insights from advanced panel estimators
This study argues that the consumption of clean energy sources and strong institutional quality could help mitigate the trade-offs between economic growth and environmental quality and also curtail the negative effects of external debt on the environment. The limitations of the study and directions for future research are discussed.PMID:34228308 | DOI:10.1007/s11356-021-15191-9 (Source: Environmental Science and Pollution Research International)

Exploring the Diet and Physical Activity Behaviours of Adolescents Living in India and sub-Saharan Africa: A Qualitative Evidence Synthesis
CONCLUSIONS: In-depth research exploring adolescents' perceptions of diet and physical activity is needed to better understand how both boys and girls, at different stages of adolescence, perceive health, diet and physical activity. More research with young people is required especially in countries where little exists to cover a wider range of issues that play a role in diet and physical activity.PMID:34196267 | DOI:10.1017/S1368980021002408 (Source: Public Health Nutrition)

Evaluation of improved coloured targets to control riverine tsetse in East Africa: A Bayesian approach
ConclusionViolet and Vestergaard ZeroFly blue are expected to outperform typical blue polyester in the Tiny Target configuration. Violet is unlikely to greatly outperform Vestergaard blue deployed in this way, but because violet is highly attractive to both riverine and savannah tsetse using different target designs, it may provide the more suitable general-purpose fabric. IJERPH, Vol. 18, Pages 6263: Exposure to Second-Hand Smoke in Public Places and Barriers to the Implementation of Smoke-Free Regulations in The Gambia: A Population-Based Survey
Conclusion: Despite existing smoke-free regulations, reported exposure to second-hand smoke remains high in public places in The Gambia. The Ministry of Health should continue to strengthen their advocacy and sensitization programs to ensure smoke-free regulations are fully implemented. Some population subgroups are at a higher risk of exposure and could be targeted by interventions; and settings where these subgroups are exposed should be targeted by enforcement efforts.
