Scaling up of tsetse control to eliminate Gambian sleeping sickness in northern Uganda
ConclusionsScaling-up of tsetse control reduced the population of tsetse by>80% across the intervention area. Even better control might be achievable by tackling invasion of flies from infested areas within and outside the current intervention area. This might involve deploying more targets, especially along smaller rivers, and extending the effective life of Tiny Targets. (Source: PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases)

Prevalence of and factors associated with tobacco smoking in the Gambia: a national cross-sectional study
Conclusions
Men, older people, manual workers, individuals with lower education and lower wealth status were the vulnerable groups to tobacco smoking in the Gambia. Government should intensify awareness programmes on the harmful effects of smoking, and introduce proper cessation support services among tobacco smoking users prioritising these risk groups. Integrated assessment of trypanosomosis challenge on cow health and milk based on The Gambia's agropastoralism
Acta Trop. 2022 May 16:106520. doi: 10.1016/j.actatropica.2022.106520. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTTo improve understanding of African Animal Trypanosomosis (AAT) and associated host-parasite relationship's challenges on cow and milk, The Gambia was examined given its enzootic status. Based on an integrated assessment framework, semi-structured questionnaires which were pre-tested and then administered in five regions were used. Relationships among the investigated variables were statistically explored with Pearson chi-square test and strength of association quantified with Phi or Cramer's V coefficient. Rough coat, eye ...

Attributable risk of household solid fuel use and second-hand smoke associated with under-5 mortality in 46 low- and lower-middle-income countries, 2010-2020
This study provides a comprehensive assessment of their odds ratios and attributable mortality in LMICs.METHODS: We used the Demographic Health Surveys data for under-5 children in 46 LMICs (n = 778,532) from 2010 to 2020. Mixed effect multilevel logistic regressions were conducted to estimate the pooled adjusted odds ratio (aOR) for U5M due to solid fuel use, SHS and their combination compared to no exposure to them in 46 LMICs. The attributable mortality of solid fuel use, SHS, and their combination were assessed for each LMIC.FINDINGS: The pooled aOR of solid fuel use and SHS for U5M was estimated to be 1.27 (95% Confid...

Comparative analysis of the growth impact of pollution and energy use in selected West African nations
Environ Sci Pollut Res Int. 2022 May 3. doi: 10.1007/s11356-022-20532-3. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTWe adopt the FMOLS and Granger causality technique to analyse the effect of energy use and carbon emissions on output growth in selected West African economies, which includes Nigeria, Gambia and Ghana, from 1970 to 2019. Findings confirm that energy use enhances growth in the three selected West African economies. But in terms of significance, energy consumption is significant in Nigeria and Gambia at a 1% level of significance while it is insignificant for the Gambia. CO2 emission positively and significantly propels ec...

Religion, Health, and Life Satisfaction Among Somali and Gambian Women in Norway
This article describes and analyses the religious justifications for the life satisfaction reported by two groups of Muslim women. Approximately, twenty Somali women and twenty Gambian women, living in Norway, who had experienced trauma and pain due to female genital mutilation/cutting as well as other traumas and hardships, were interviewed. While the Somali women adhere to conservative Islam and try to cope with the ir life through endurance and patience, the Gambians belong to a Sufi tradition and verbalise their dissatisfaction in order to receive help from Sufi saints. Therefore, there are two religious codes, here...

Epidemiology of occupational hazards and injuries among fishermen at Tanji fishing site in The Gambia: an analytical cross-sectional study design
This study aimed at examining the determinants of occupational hazards and injuries among fishermen at Tanji fishing site, a major fish-landing site in the Gambia, West Africa. An analytical cross-sectional design was conducted in August to October 2019. Structured questionnaires were administered to fishermen at Tanji fishing site. A simple random sampling method was used to select fishermen in this study. Data entry and processing for preliminary data analysis was done using Stata version 15. Descriptive and bivariate analysis using chi-square/fisher exact test as well as binary logistics regression analysis were used. T...
