Cross-Calibration of iDXA and pQCT Scanners at Rural and Urban Research Sites in The Gambia, West Africa
AbstractBetween-scanner differences in measures of bone and body composition can obscure or exaggerate physiological differences in multi-site studies or the magnitude of changes in longitudinal studies. We conducted a cross-calibration study at two bone imaging centres in The Gambia, West Africa where DXA (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry) and pQCT (peripheral Quantitative-Computed Tomography) are routinely used. Repeat scans were obtained from 64 Gambian adults (58% Male) aged Mean(SD) 30.9 (13.5) years with Mean(SD) body mass index (BMI) 21.7 (4.0) kg/m2, using DXA (GE Lunar iDXA, whole body [WB], total hip [TH], lumbar...

Endemic rise in cases of acute kidney injury in children in Indonesia and Gambia: what is the likely culprit and why?
A sudden rise in cases of acute kidney injury (AKI) has been reported in Indonesia and Gambia that has been linked to the consumption of tainted syrup medications for cough, colds, pain, and fever. Preliminary investigations revealed multiple lapses in quality control during manufacturing including substitution of diethylene glycol (DEG) and ethylene glycol (EG) for the more expensive but non-toxic solvent glycerol. In this editorial, we shed light upon the current situation and urge the investigating authorities to make those responsible accountable to regain public trust. (Source: Kidney International)

Epidemiology of free-living amoebae infections in Africa: a review
Pathog Glob Health. 2022 Dec 22:1-8. doi: 10.1080/20477724.2022.2160890. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTFLA-related conditions are a rare medical occurrence. Despite their rarity, they are considered a public health concern for two reasons: the absence of a regular treatment regimen in the case of central nervous system infections and the fast progression of the symptoms leading to fatal outcomes. A total of 358 articles were retrieved from different databases (91 from PubMed, 26 from NCBI, 138 from Academia, 102 from Science Direct, and one from IJMED). 7 (46.6%) clinical cases came from Egypt, 2 (13.3%) cases of FLA infec...
